Hearthstone is definitely NOT Pay to Win. I've been playing for some time, have spent very little real money, and have a decent win record.

There are plenty of decks listed online that are mostly made from basics, and can be devastating.

Here's a few tips:
Do NOT pay 100gold for a deck; instead save to 150 and enter the Arena. You will always get 1 deck as a reward, but you'll get some other loot too, even if you lose 3 in a row. Plus playing Arena is the best way to learn how to build effective decks. And if you get a couple of wins you'll get more decks.

As you accumulate cards choose maybe 3 characters you'd like to actually play, and disenchant every card you can for the characters you are not going to play. This will get you the dust you need to start crafting cards for your main decks. Once you have your main decks up to scratch, then you can stop disenchanting cards.

Disenchant Gold cards if you have 2 of the regular ones. Gold cards just look cool, but don't offer anything better than the non gold version - but they disenchant for loads more dust.

Log in every day to get your quests. And if you have a quest that does not match one of your main decks, then ditch it.

The most effective way to gain gold is play Unranked games and Arena. Don't worry too much about Ranked play. Other than the prestige you gain by ranking up, you do not earn anything more than playing Unranked - and you will mostly find easier opponents in the Casual mode.

Hearthstone is a surprisingly great card game. There's tonnes of good strategies and building decks with good synergies is far more important than having Legendaries. If people are interested in seeing how to play, have a look at the TrumpSC channel on Twitch. He plays a lot of Hearthstone, and shows how to get value from cards.
