TheSixthAxis writes: Further to our discussion piece over the weekend – where we talked about PlayStation Plus enhancements and streaming – we’ve been giving a little bit more thought to one part in particular. That of a new PlayStation 3 SKU.
yes. i would like a smaller and more sleeker ps3 though i realize itll be a bit tough to do if they use movable hdd
or how about a vita+ps3 160GB bundle for $400? i think its better than cutting the price of the vita alone this early if they are intending to do it. thats way they sell the vita as if it was price slashed and the move one ps3 with it.
they would lose money with a bundle like that.
The PS3 will follow the PS2 progression. PS3 will hit that $200 or £129 sweet spot soon. He told Official PlayStation Magazine UK that “If you look back at the history on PS1, PS2 the vast majority of the business that we did on both those platforms was done at the sub £129 price points. Now we’ve only got to £199 in the UK a couple of month back so you can see there’s still a lot of PS3’s potentially to be sold.” http://www.officialplaystat... There is a big possibility that a slimmer smaller PS3 model will support their campaign for the younger market.
if they made a top loader. Slim and sleek like the top loading ps2.
not just the HDD but the blu-ray drive too. When you open up a PS3 80% of the space is taken only by those 2.
The built in power supply and the Blu-ray drive take's up all the space. HDD take's hardly no space its a 2.5 HDD so it's small probably the smallist thing in the ps3. Trust me i know, I've opened up a number of fat ps3's and Slim ps3's
WTTTTFF imagine without those two it would be a fuckin very powerful machine.
That would be awesome.
If they're smart, they will.

There is no need for a new console.
They should redesign it to make it look like a smaller version of the original ps3(piano black with chrome, coloured/twistable logo, touch sensitive buttons, etc). The current ps3 slim looks way too cheap.
I wouldn't mind since my current PS3 is just a little over 4 years old
A new PS3 slimmer model at $199 would sell like hot cakes.
Why? The model they have is perfect. I'm still stuck with my fat 60 BC ps2 one though ;)
Oh yeah well I have two of those.
Damn you! *bites fist*
Yeah it's called the PS4!!! :P
it clearly says A NEW PS3 MODEL, you downsyndrome.
Yeah can you tell that I'm not serious? Don't be illiterate please.
Introducing a more environmentally friendlier version of the Slim is always good, but they should be focusing more on the PS Vita and advertising.
The PS3 is already INCREDIBLY power efficient. Sony is considered one of the "greenest" companies in the world.
There is always room for improvement.
I think it be cool if they put out a new model that plays all PS2 games, which gives them a reason to make the others cost less.
If they were going to do this it would have probably been done by now. But you never know what they are going to do until they do it.
It might be kinda hard to make it much smaller...I had a PS3 for a couple weeks and it felt solid...like there was little empty space on the inside. On the other hand, the 360 should be able to. Seems to be more empty space inside. They could also get rid of the Bulky DVD drive and swap it for a slim drive.
Most of the space is taken up by the PSU and the Blu-Ray drive, if they could reduce them in size you could get a PS3 that is considerably smaller :) (An with a smaller chip size too, even smaller) The 360 does have quite a bit of space inside, but I think that's mainly for air flow purposes so the console stays cool :)
I wouldn't be surprised/ A die shrink is long overdue.
yield significant enough results.
Any die shrink cuts cost. 32nm would allow for more chips per wafer. But IBM has been looking at going past 32nm to 28. I think Sony and MS will go 28 this year.
My HTC EVO 4G LTE has a 28nm chip. Off topic a bit, but just reaffirming your point I guess that 28nm process is already out in the wild and they should be able to skip over the 32nm process. Pretty sure Intel's Ivy Bridge chips are down to 22nm already.
I think the current version is sufficient. It's small, sleek, quiet and works like a charm. Why should Sony waste resources making another console revision? It would be cool, but it's definitely not necessary at this point in its lifecycle.
In order to do price cuts they need to cut the cost of making the console. That means shrinking the chips. Shrinking the chips means less power so smaller and cheaper power supply. Smaller and cheaper cooling. Smaller and cheaper case. Smaller and cheaper box and packages. That is how you get a $199 PS3. Price cuts come when you drop the cost of making a product. Not just because it been on the market for a while.
PS2 has gotten revisions beyond PS3's release (through November 2007), so no they aren't done revising with the current model. http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... They'll always be looking to make it smaller or lighter for less materials, storage, and shipping costs. *The original was a PLAYSTATION 3 (fat/phat). *The current model is a PlayStation 3 (regular - similar size to the original PS2). It was specifically not named a 'Slim' or 'PSThree'. http://www.islabit.com/wp-c... *There will very likely still be a slimmer version.
They released three different versions of the psp and three different versions of the ps2. So why not release three different versions of the ps3?
i really dnt think they will, i noticed my brothers ps3 dnt have the light to show cd in drive and no hdd and wifi lights. they are really cutting cost rite about now
I hope they do. PS3 has plenty of life left with a lot of great exclusives coming. I know Sony can make it slimmer. PS3 US(Ultra Slim) is what they should call it.
i dont think the ps3 would get any more slim,i think if it does that model would have overheating issues just my opinion.
the ps3 "slim" really wasnt all that slim compared to the original - in 1 dimension it was noticeably "fatter". that and it looks like a cheap fisher price kids toy. I was never a huge fan of the PS3s design, too big and weird shaped, but the slim is just horrible. i dont think theyll redesign it again, would be pointless.
You need to buy the system to actually know the comparison.
I'm on my 3rd PS3. 1 Fat 80 GB and 2nd slim 120 GB. My 1st Slim was about 3 years and the blu-ray failed and I didn't want to send it in for a hefty fee and or risk losing everything due to a HDD failure soon after.
LOL your unlucky, I still have my ps3 from launch 2006
I changed the thermal paste and it runs like the first day :) Also, you could have replaced the BluRay drive yourself.....I would have.
Make it smaller... Keep the same features and don't gimp it the way Sony did with the past PS3 refreshes and lower the price slightly and they will have a winner right there
i don't think they have to make another type of ps3 just wait for ps4 they already had a price cut but a new color would be cool :P
Sounds good but my fat 60gb still alive n shiny
why would they just start on playstation vita and stop just to make a whole new console instead? OF COURSE NOT theres already been a story like this a couple days ago too for the record and everyone there was agreeing with me, maybe in a couple years, maybe sooner, we might get it, this is all speculation, the old version is fine as long as you reguarly update it and dont keep to much saved memory on it
probably not but maybe.. im fine with my slim model & my upgraded 60GB model tho.. i say dont bother & just focus time & resources creating PS4 or Orbis RIGHT...This gen was far worse than the past generations game wise.. It was ALL about shooters & COD cuz thats what sells these days.. CANT WAIT 4 Last of Us, Last Gaurdian, & Ascension to come out
and my old fat 72GB playstation works just fine even after four years of use
I wouldn't mind a slimmer glossy Ps3.
A price cut would be nice so that my friends can play a PS3 rather than have their xbox sit dormant...
hoping for a 500 gb model with move packed in for $299
yes please my slim is not playing ps3 games anymore, ive been playing ps1 games for 2 months now
You can download many of them from the PS Store. Just sayin'...
naw dude my ps3 won't read ps3 games but will read dvd'd and ps1 games its weird
It won't read downloaded PS3 games? Or Blu-ray discs?
Bring back PS2 compatibility and include a couple of full PS3 games pre-installed on the hard drive. Backwards compatibility would drive people to it. Also, most people don't even KNOW that you can download full titles...and sometimes for much cheaper than retail, if you're in PlayStation Plus. :) It would be a great promotion for the PlayStation Store. Also, increase the hard drive, please? My 320 isn't cutting it...and upgrading to a 500 GB has proved difficult so far. -_-
Long live the PHATTTTY! I'm never getting rid of my super schmexy glossy 60GB.
YEA, fatboys for life
The only reason I would ever get another new version of the PS3 is if they brought back PS2 compatibility. I might still not get it then just because my PS2 games have slowly but surely disappeared and starting all of your beloved saves again would really suck.
If there's a top-loader model, it'll look either more amazing and smaller... Or like, a George Foreman grill even more-so. Not saying this to rehash a crappy meme.
