The Internet in the U.S. isn't built for an "always on" game console

NeoWin - Before we get into this topic, here's a brief qualifier: Microsoft has not yet given an official comment on what they plan to do for their next Xbox game console. This editorial is not assuming that Microsoft's successor to the Xbox 360 will in fact need an 'always on" Internet connection to play games or run its apps.

Do people just forget the rest of planet earth exists?!?

GreenRanger4047d ago

The author can only speak for his own country.

MariaHelFutura4047d ago

I guess so. Usually people in the gaming industry speak for everyone. It through me off. :)

JsonHenry4047d ago

Do people just forget America is one of the largest markets for almost any consumer device? If it fails here it probably means disaster for the company promoting it.

And the author is right. We may have some markets that might be okay with an always connected console. But I know I will not bother buying the Xbox if this is the case. Not because I don't want it. But because I want to be able to use reliably what it is I purchase.

CEOSteveBallmer4047d ago

Asia and Europe is Bigger than america last time I remembered. Because we have larger continents that Supports gaming as their media also. But you are correct its "One" of the biggest

JsonHenry4047d ago

It is "the" largest of the markets on almost all fronts - http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Numero uno. For now.

Cocozero4048d ago

This is becoming News 4 720. At this rate MS won't need an ad campaign.

MariaHelFutura4048d ago

Why are so surprised? An employee just came out and basically said "If you don't have the internet, deal with it"" and MS has not shot down his comments in a way that doesn't announce their unannounced system. Like, "we would never do that". If they said that, all this negativity regarding this issue would cease to exist quickly. Thus, constantly having negative articles with some merit to them is not the type of advertisement any company wants, ever. That scenario is is confined to your imagination, like how you think the 360 has sold more than the PS3 this generation... which is simply not true.

stage884047d ago

There's a difference between positive news and negative news. This is doing MS a huge amount of harm.

amiga-man4047d ago (Edited 4047d ago )

And Sony a huge amount of good, PS4 was already looking a great buy but with the huge negativity surrounding the nextbox the PS4 is looking the better option everyday.

Blaze9294047d ago

you all act like the entire world spends their time on the internet. To the people who really matter and majority of average consumers - the day the next Xbox is revealed will probably be the first time many of them are even hearing about a new xbox coming.

MariaHelFutura4047d ago

^^^

My son and his friends at school know all about both systems. Rumors and facts. On the internet news real or fake spreads like wildfire. The "always on" comments by Adam Orth were on the front page of Yahoo.

B1663r4047d ago

No it isn't. This concept is garnering a huge amount of comments from trolls. The vast majority of people in the world dont mind internet connected devices the way you guys do, and this issue will have no affect on them what so ever.

BitbyDeath4047d ago

Is too bad the PS4 isn't yet available everywhere for pre-orders otherwise it'd be going through the roof with everyone switching to it.

News 4 720? What "news" are you referring to? Are you really suggesting these negative RUMORS are a suitable ad campaign replacement for MS?

MasterCornholio4047d ago (Edited 4047d ago )

Why would anyone have an ad campaign that involves negative news about their console?

For example, imagine if Nintendo had an ad that stated that the Wii U will be an inferior console compared to other next gen systems like the PS4 and the 720 imagine how much damage it would cause to Nintendos console.

Seriously whats the point of this?

Jakens4047d ago

They did and they have released said console...

OT: MS better come on stage and address this always on thing first. To a positive point and not a negative one.

Let's Be Real, There Is Nothing "Micro" About Microtransactions Anymore

Microtransactions have gotten ridiculously overpriced in recent years, with titles now offering cosmetic skins worth more than some games.

Terry_B1d 11h ago

Yup..this is 100% the sad truth

z2g14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

The elephant in the room tho is personal accountability. It’s easy (albeit basic) to blame the big, bad corpo, but microtransactions wouldn’t be where they are if gamers didn’t spend money on them. As it stands the MTs usually make more than the game. Publishers know raising game prices will cause backlash, so they do MTs to compensate. But the adult conversation is consumers determine the success of products with their wallets. So if MTs are a huge thing, it’s because we as consumers told them we like them by giving them a lot of money for them. So if you don’t want them to be a thing, convince your fellow gamers to stop buying them and expect that games will be decently more expensive. You all can disagree all you want, but reality is a bitch, and eventually you have to live in it.

anast12h ago

Trying to convince people is the least realistic thing. If we are trying to be adults, actual action is what changes things not "convincing campaigns" on platforms owned by the people 'you' are going against. It's madness and idealistic.

ApocalypseShadow7h ago

Easier said than done. I've told gamers for years to not buy micro transactions, expensive dlc, etc. Gamers bought it anyway. Didn't fit on a DVD that would have fit on a Blu-ray disc.

I also told some gamers to not pay for online like Xbox Live because it would force the rest of the industry to only offer playing online if you pay for it. Told them not to support a broken console that Red Ringed. To not support Xbox One because Microsoft tried to take away game ownership and how you play your games. To not pay for a console by one manufacturer where a, now 3 trillion worth, didn't make enough games at the level of Nintendo or Sony who are worth less money.

How much of that did you support anyway with your money then go back and read your comment again.

notachance1h ago

yeah that was like telling people not to do drugs or alcohol, these game companies invested a lot of money in researching about how to make people buy MTs, from creating mechanics like loot boxes, purposely make the game grindy, all the way to menu designs and what color and sound effects played when gamers bought MTs.

It was specifically engineered to take advantage of vulnerable and prone to addiction people.

isarai1d 3h ago

I mean except for the amount of content you're paying for.

Hugodastrevas16h ago

There never was, the only time I paid for a microtransaction was on Blacklight Retribution (PS4) and it was because I enjoyed the game a lot so I felt the devs should get something for all that entertainment (€5 "membership")

-Foxtrot15h ago

The devs wouldn’t get that though, that shit goes straight to the higher ups who do f*** all let’s be honest.

Hugodastrevas14h ago

Probably, but I wasn't as cynical back then and €5 wasn't a big ask to get the guns with grinding instead of renting them, and the game was good (still is on the PS5/4)

CrimsonWing6914h ago(Edited 14h ago)

I couldn’t believe what Blizzard charged for horse armor and cosmetics in Diablo 4…

I remember back in the day when a season pass was $15 and you got everything included in it. Now, I see them at $60 and you still don’t get everything.

CantThinkOfAUsername7h ago

That's just Blizzard. Unlike Bethesda's $0.99 horse armour, Blizzard's first microtransaction, Sparkle Pony, cost $15.

Shane Kim14h ago

As soon as gaming wasn't deemed nerdy anymore, and reached the casuals this happened. We're smart, but casuals play mobile games and other stuff, and don't really have anything to compare. They think gaming is supposed to be like this and pay for in game purchases.

Keoken Interactive lays off majority of team after failing to find funding at GDC

Deliver Us Mars developer Keoken Interactive has laid off the majority of its staff after struggling to secure funding …

mastershredder5d ago

The industry model and standards and who's in place to approve/disapprove have changed ^ what Keoken is feeling now is much like the Mobile burst 15 years ago. Expect more to come out of your own finances. Investors are treating games like movies and now (thank$ a lot for involving yourself hollywood) only the big (and money blind) investors get involved, effectively killing a lot of content that would come out with proper non-gate-kept and/or with incentivized funding.

Markdn5d ago

And when you only make a fraction of your games worth on gamepass you suffer

Tacoboto5d ago

Palworld and Manor Lords are so suffering.

RiseNShine4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Sorry but i couldn't care less, Deliver us Mars was as woke game as they come, climate change disaster, all female cast plus only a comic relief indian guy (it takes only 5 minutes into the game for the main female character to say how smart she is compared to the guy), evil white guys, ugly females, then add generic gameplay and puzzles (how many times do you have to cut things with a laser for gods sake), you can't change anything in how the events develop so 0 agency in the story, sub par graphics even while using UE4. So well, go woke go broke, that's how it works.

Miacosa4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

That stinks but with a 68 average critic rating on their games probably made it difficult for people to invest considering there is a bloat of games getting made these days.

ROCKY284d ago

You guys will be back with team strength and funding !
