Sony cuts production cost of PS3, may give Xbox 360 run for its money

Well, x360 already made it`s hardcore fan base, but since 2008 i see sales to decline, of`course price cut will rise sales, but overall, it will be good if x360 pass 8 mln. in 2008. x360 just DON`T have games in 2008, that would really move console and interest new users.
x360 has great games for 2008, like Alan Wake, Too human, Lost Odyssey, Fable 2, Halo Wars, Infinite undiscovery, Ninja gaiden 2 and etc. But this won`t make sales for the system, because about most of these games only x360 owners care. Most just hardcore gamers.
In reality only GTA4 has some chances to increase x360 sales in overall.
PS3 going to offer much better gaming experience in many ways. Starting from free online, and ending with variety of genres.

Wii is just to simple as a machine. It's easygoing easy to setup and cheap.

I think one reason why is selling well is because it's not engineered as a multimedia device. A lot of people still look down on the Wii like it's a toy. IMHO as a parent I'd buy my 8-10 year old $250 Wii over a $400-600 high tech computer device.

Don't get me wrong I love my Wii. It just makes me feel like buying a PS3 or 360 for an 8-10 year old is like buying a $1000 PC for kids to break. They don't seem appropriate high tech devices as much.

I suppose the Wii does suit casual gamers more then hardcore gamers. It's hard to image granny playing God of War or Halo. Much easier to imagine them playing Mario or Wii games.

Guess thats why people like it.

I think the technology on a PS3 or 360 intimates some people as well. To many people seem to fear high technology. Wii doesn't seem to cutting edge and appears less intimidating to some.

These are just my humble opinions though. I'm sure there or other reasons but considering the sales for the current gen consoles It's hard for me to deny these possibilities.

As for Sony having to beat the Wii, no problem. You see, the Wii is a mere fad. You know why it's so hard to find a Wii? Nintendo knows people aren't buying Wii games. MS F*cked it up by releasing the 360 too early. So while the PS3 is ready to live on for 10 years, the 360 will be replaced by MS in 2010/2011, because it was released early with mediocre hardware. So, the PS3 will have to compete with the "720" or whatever for 2-4 years before the ps4 is released. Unless ps4 comes early too. But i dont want it to. It would be too early and the advancements in 3-4 years arnt worth it. we need 5-7 years of advancements to make ps4 worth it. MS is trying to F*ck up the industry to make the video games world more like the PC world. Expect xbox730, 740 and 750 in 1-2 year increments. Umm a 5 year console life has been the norm for some time though the PS2 went on for 7, would had been 6 had it not been for the delay that the BR caused. So say the next Xbox does come out in 11 which at this point is just a wild guess, that would indeed stick to the normal time frame. Also around that 5 year mark is when the tech. of the system system begins to really show it's age. While the PS2 still has some nice looking games, they compare to nothing to the 360/PS3 offers so in order to keep pace with tech. trends you have to release new hardware, hence the 5 year mark.

If you are willing to wait 10 years then why in the he11 would you have even purchased a PS3 when you could of stuck with ps2! I remember reading that the Cell can talk to other Cells on a network. Wouldn't it be amazing if the PS3 could be upgraded by just attaching a Cell module to your network? The new Cell could work with your PS3 and add more power. I don't know if this rumor was really true but it would be great if upgrading a PS3 was as easy as buying a Cell module for $100 and plugging it in.

Alot of us knew this from the start. Thats why we didnt mind paying a big cost because it was still worth it. Now its more than worth and I'm glad more people will see that and jump on board.

I just hope this news doesn't stall sales, with people waiting for a price cut. Dudes dont wait 6 months to save a hundred dollars. Youre not saving $100, you're losing 6 months.

Sony can afford to include Blu-ray because it's their format and they make the drives so they get everything at their cost. This is where Microsoft has it tougher. They're a software company. They have to pay for parts. I guess if they waited six months and included an HD DVD drive maybe Toshiba would have sold them the drives at cost. Too bad for the 360 and HDDVD that Microsoft was in such a hurry to release their new console. Things could have been much different.

I knew from the start though that the PS3 was the console to support. No thanks on the 360. I have enough trouble with Windows.

Don't be in too much of a hurry for a PS3 price cut. Maybe in time for Christmas. The PS3 isn't much more than the 360 now but gives you a lot more. At $399 it's a great deal. I paid full price for my PS3 and don't feel ripped off. Sony needs to just get the big games out and watch sales really get going.

The Wii is not a competitor with the PS3. It's more of a competitor with the PS2. they both put out the same graphical output, and it's not really next gen graphics. The XBOX is the PS3's main competitor and they are starting to see why the PS3 is feared so much now by adding the Blu Ray drive, wifi, and HDD. 2008 will be the year the PS3 flexes its muscles and pulls away from the competition. It's kind of easy to reduce production costs when you release a 40 gig version, with less HDMI ports, no mem card function, and no backwards compatibility as they did here in OZ. The cost for a new PS3 has gone from $1000 to $700 AUD once they discontinued the 60gig model and reduced the features. That doesn't sound like a 'plan' but a reaction to consummer nonchalence to me.

maybe a bit of a sales increase in America, but a price drop would hardly do anything in Japan. Europe might have a very small sales increase, but nothing significant. the ps3 is outselling the 360 in most european countries except the UK and this trend will continue in the next six months. By the time the price drop affects the EU, 360 demand would have dropped quite a bit in europe.

America is different from EU and Japan, so a price drop would bring up sales a bit (i think maybe 25% higher) for the first week, then drop back down to normal levels 4 to 5 weeks after the price drop.

PS3 has still a long, long way to go also on the PSN part to be an equal competitor to the 360 game greatness. Yes 2008 will be a better year, but Microsoft won't sit still also. Expect a 360 price cut soonish because there is more room for price drops on the 360 (out more then 2 years only had a 50 Dollar/Euro pricecut officially) then the PS3 out just over one year and got a cut of 200 Euro/Dollar (in Europe even within a half year).

Must admit the PS3 is a cheap BluRay player. But I can do that trick with an external USB 2.0 HDD and let the movies play on my 360. Or even let my PC stream them.

well anyway, i think 360 software will continue to sell well in 2008, possibly surpassing 2007 software revenues, BUT 360 hardware sales will continue to decrease. 2006 was the peak year of 360 hardware sales. 2007, the 360 sold less than it did in 2006, so i think 2008 will continue this downward trend in terms of hardware sales.

the ps3 will peak its hardware sales in either '09 or '10, when there is much more software available to buy and because of improvements to the PSN and ps3 media capabilities, like DVR.

Good choice to go all white with the setup. Black is so 80's :P But really that setup does looks sexy, doesn't it. A friend of mine has that HDTV exactly. I've gamed on it with a with a white 360. I have a ceramic white PSP to go with my 360.

It's all good, the point I wanted to make is that after the Warner story, there were so many BluRay related stories, and the games have still yet to deliver really.

BTW Sony, I am still waiting on my GT on the PSP. So... This is Waiting. That's just Sony. Luckely a custom firmware on the PSP and a lot of homebrew software/gimmicks make the handheld interesting. Only game really interesting for 2008 is God of War but well.

For the white PS3, good choice also. Probably releasing in USA/Europe 2nd half of 2008, when the games worth to get are supposed to be released. If not delayed again, but well. White PS3 will be here, hopefully rumble in the controller with the package, Home not delayed and implemented, ingame XMB and all those things Sony is promissing already for ages. Would be nice huh?

PS3 is going to have a great year no doubt. 360 has a great lineup also. I own a 360 and have no regrets. Its an awesome system with a great library of games. Im into shooters, and sports games so the 360 is perfect for me. The only PS3 games that catch my attention is MGS4, and Resistance 2, but I still perfer Gears Of War, Halo, Bioshock.

This Ps4 could be quickly made and would be significantly better than the Ps3 and best of all....be damn cheap and easy to develop for.

But Sony doesn't need to worry about the wii as most next gen owners will also have a wii and when the Ps3 becomes dirt cheap and has a huge library of games then the casual gamers will start buying it up by the boat loads and guess what? Those casual gamers will already have a Wii.

"The 360 in its second year has managed to sell, with all of its really big hitters coming out, just 7.3M units. The PS3 with only a handful of big hitters and competition on both sides from Microsoft and Nintendo (that remember the 360 didn’t have in its first year), has managed to sell in 14 months 8.9M units. Europe still has 3-4 months of sales yet to reach one year. So if we take the 8.9 as it stands now and include 3-4 months of Europe sales it will probably be about 10-10.5M units by April. But we’ll take the initial 2 months of Japan and America sales that cover Nov-Dec of 2006 off that figure to give us a rough indication of global sales for the year, and your at about 9-9.5M units after one year.

That’s approx. 2M unit difference for the PS3 compared to the 360 after one year.

This year, PS3’s big hitters arrive, so lets say Sony manage to increase that gap for 2008 by 2M more units, as those titles will probably shift a few more units.

Now, if the 360 sells the same this year as last year, that’s 7.3M units to add to its 16-17M units it already has shipped, that equals approx. 23-24M units worldwide by the end of 2008.

If the PS3 sells 2M units more this year over its first year sales, thats:

9.5M (first years estimated global sales) + 11.5M (2M units more for 2008) = 21M units. Add-on the initial 1.3M units we took off for Nov-Dec of 2006 for America and Japan and your at, 22.3M units by the end of 2008.

Even if we say next year those big hitters for PS3 have NO impact and the sales remain the same.

9.5 + 9.5 + 1.3 = 20.3M units. So the gap between PS3 and the 360 would only be about 2 to 3M units by the end of 2008. Now thats just estimates, but you see the general direction this is going, and thats just after one more year of sales. Even if the differences in sales are half of what i’ve just estimated them to be, it would only be 1.5 to 2 years away that the gap is closed. So, 2009 could just see the PS3 take the lead"

In all seriousness, chances are the 360 sales will slow while PS3 sales will start to pick up, but overall I just don't see ps3 outselling the 360 worldwide total until maybe mid 2009.

if ps3 80GB hit $250 its over for Wii and 360 look at history Wii sold well cause it was cheapest console on next gen market if ps3 hit this mark i doubt 360 can sale as well cause everyone already have 360 or waiting for cheaper ps3

One of the main things that made Sony so dominant with the PS1 and PS2 was their ability to design hardware so that they could rapidly and dramatically reduce the hardware costs, enabling them to lower the price of the hardware and make a healthy profit at the same time. I think the same will prove true with the PS3 as it's an integral part of their strategy. Microsoft hasn't shown any ability in the past to reduce their hardware costs enough to keep their prices competitive or to make the hardware profitable. By the time they pulled the plug on the Xbox they were still losing money on each unit sold - this makes it easy to understand why the Xbox division has lost about 1 billion dollars a year since it's inception. For comparison the PS2 has been at $120 for over a year and costs Sony less than $60 to make each unit - making it very profitable for them. Nintendo has a totally different strategy, especially with the Wii, selling hardware for a profit from day one - which frankly makes sense with the Wii since the hardware isn't "bleeding edge" and prices aren't going to come down as dramatically - nor do they have the consumer electronics clout of a brand like Sony who can get amazing prices on the components that go into their systems.

I support sony because they deserve it, they deserve support for year in and year out producing great games, excellent systems with countless hours of fun and enjoyment, it was the sony playstation that got me interested in videogames. Why would anyone even want to support microsoft? They make computers not gaming consoles, they are not even part of the gaming industry they fvcking suck, literally. The only thing M$ cares about is money, why would any company need to make another system already? If one has been following Sony's announcements at all for the past year one would realise that Sony are betting on the software to sell the system not the price, also factor in that Sony want to start breaking even on the PS3 soon which would be impossible with further price drops.

Sony will be reactive not proactive when it comes to pricing.

Sony may have trimmed production costs of the 40GB SKU down to $400, but with PS3 selling around 69K units last week in NA & Motorstorm selling 41K copies it isn't unrealistic to imagine Sony is still losing well over 100 dollars on roughly 2/3rds of PS3s sold.

MS is not droping the x360 price cos they know SONY will follow, and imagine the PS3 sales with an even lower price.
A price drop will have more effect for the ps3 than it would for the x360. And with the ps3 line up plus a price drop, the ps3 will fly off the shelves. And MS knows that.
PS3 is outselling x360 ww so SONY is in no rush dropping the price. They are just waiting for MS to make that move.

Last year debates and argument between which is better, PS3 or 360 have escalated to a free publicity for the format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD.
Sales of movies disc for 2007 have shown that consumers have chosen the better but more expensive Blu-ray format. With PS3 able to handle both games and movies, coupled with the fact that it is also cheaper than other standalone Blu-ray players, means that people who bought the console, use it as a player too. If not, why didn't HD-DVD movies outsell Blu-ray since it sold more standalone players (excluding PS3). I believe that is why Warner finally supports Blu-ray exclusively.

Fanism aside, what do you think will result if
1) Microsoft has incoporate HD-DVD drive in their 360 consoles in the first place?
2) PS3 is using a regular DVD drive?
3) Sales of HD-DVD outsold Blu-ray 2:1 every week?
4) 5(now 6) out of 8 Hollywood movies studios support HD-DVD?
5) Warner Bros. annouces support for HD-DVD exclusively?
6) 360 fanboys will just ignore PS3 fanboys' taunts (resulted in some websites forum having to shut down temporarily = more publicity)?

Conclusion: All these happen now because
1) Sony incoporate Blu-ray drive in PS3
2) Free publicity in 2007 for PS3 and its Blu-ray format by constant arguing and debates over who has the better console. Should Sony thanks you all for this free all year advertisment? I think they should.
3) I am one of the early adopters of Blu-ray by buying a PS3. :)

Regarding all the talk of 360 price cuts vs. PS3 price cuts, I'm curious what people think about the possibility of the PS3 eventually dropping lower in price than the 360. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if it happens by 2009 or 2010, but what do you think?

I think both Sony and MS would like to avoid price war, it will certainly drive both consoles sale but it will hurt their margin. I think both company still on stand by, that means, both will react rather than initiate a move. So the price cut might not ever happen, unless, either Sony or Ms thinks that they can take on the extreme financial strain. This will involve the whole infrastructure of MS and Sony.

The Xbox360 cost reduction cycle will always be ahead that of the PS3.

The cost savings from hardware price reductions will be more significant for Sony but they'll only be using that to offset their current losses and try to break even as Hirai has stated.
