Ugly Video Game Characters

Via Polish the Console: "Every video game has an ugly character or two and I can overlook them. But I find it difficult to get connected to, feel empathy for, or wish for the survival of my main character when all I can think is “Holy crap why did they make him so damn ugly?” I’m supposed to be living for a period of this person’s life. I’m supposed to assume their role and identify with them. Why would I want to? Is it supposed to be fun to have children and women run screaming at my very appearance and have farmers chase me with pitchforks until I eventually burn to death in a windmill (name that movie)? No, its not fun."

Her face was "kinda" f*cked up actually. She was hot there is no doubt about it but she kinda seemed different to most players because of her face. Oh and BTW the ugliest game character is without a doubt Ganon from Wand Of Gamelon and Faces Of Evil.

dizzleK5031d ago

i disagreed with it too. miranda would definitely be in the top list of "easy on the eyes" characters.

Kurt Russell5031d ago (Edited 5031d ago )

I would say she is a BOBFOC personally ;)

Body of baywatch face of crimewatch

Reibooi5031d ago

Her face had that uncanny valley effect. If you know who she is modeled after and have seen the real person and then she Miranda in game she just looks off.

That said I would not go as far as to call her ugly. There are far worse characters out there.

Myze5031d ago

Actually, knowing who she is modeled after, kind of helped me picture her (Yvonne Strahovski) while playing. Anyone who claims the real life woman is ugly has some of the worst taste imaginable.

ExplosionSauce5031d ago

Looks like they made her ugly, compared to the real life model.

b-real5031d ago

but they slightly (just slightly) over powered her jaw line. Other than that she is hot stuff. To bad she hated my ME2 character :(. I ended up f*cking that ugly jack mole just to get a load off...

Socrates5030d ago

"To bad she hated my ME2 character :(. I ended up f*cking that ugly jack mole just to get a load off..."

That stuff had me laughing my @ss off. lol

But yeah, Miranda is hot. I don't care what anybody says.

Alos885031d ago

I'm surprised they mentioned her but not Jack.

Galaxia5031d ago

Jack was utterly revolting, both physically and personality wise. Worst character ever.

unknownhero11235031d ago

with a bullet wound in the stomache. miranda is not ugly, I don't see why she's on this list.

Yi-Long5031d ago

... is one of the worst and ugliest lead-character designs in a game ever. Horrible.

I'm pretty damn sure many people never gave the game a chance because the lead-character was so unappealing.

Persistantthug5031d ago (Edited 5031d ago )

What planet are you from?
On this planet, she's hot...even if it is a video game.

Also, alot of people didn't give the game a chance because PLATINUM GAMES botched the PS3 version. However, they've since learned their lesson and will now lead develop their game(s) on the PS3. Had they not gone the lazy route and had they done that from the start, Bayonetta would have done better both COMMERCIALLY and CRITICALLY.

Considering this is a Japanese based game, they should have done this from the start.

One good thing to come out of this "fiasco", is that ALOT of other developers took notice.

acky15031d ago

i had a permanent chubby throughout the Bayonetta demo...shes damn hot

Greywulf5031d ago

Bayonetta just didnt' appeal to the general PS3 audience. Even if it ran that 5% better on the PS3, theres this thing called God Of War 3 that people have been looking forward to for years.

It just came out of nowhere, and was an oversexed generic blah of a title.

xskipperx825031d ago (Edited 5031d ago )

@Greywulf
It ran better on PS3??? Are you retarded?

Persistantthug5031d ago (Edited 5031d ago )

I didn't say BAYONETTA would have gone double or TRIPLE platinum....

What I said is, if the game (PS3's version) had not been universally reported and WIDELY PUBLICIZED as inferior on the PS3, then the game would have done BETTER both commercially AND critically.

Bayonetta lost review scores AND sales behind this "fiasco".

What's the problem here, Greywulf?

I get that some people might not find Miranda's face attractive because she's fairly unique looking, but "ugly"? Hardly. She's no uglier than the average girl you'd see irl. That's what makes her an interesting character to look at imo...She's not a cookie-cutter beauty. She has her flaws. Just like a real person.

"Ugly" is someone who looks like Gruntilda or Wario or Street Fighter's Rufus. Not Miranda.

Sometimes I wonder what sort of standards people on N4G have... or does the internet skew people's perceptions or something? :/

starchild5031d ago

I agree completely. Miranda was nice to look at. I thought she was attractive for a videogame character.

dredgewalker5031d ago

Miranda ain't ugly, she just looks average with a lot of sex appeal. I can say Chloe is ugly even though she also has a lot of sex appeal.

MmaFanQc5031d ago

she look like michel jackson.........

inception1235031d ago

miranda is only ugly because the 360 isn't powerful enough to make her look the way the devs wanted(she was modeled after her voice actress yvonne strahovski).

DarkSpawnClone5031d ago

wow really ?,wtf is with all the trolls and fanboys.can we have one convo with out being a fanboy!!?!?.look at the 2 tools that agreed with him,i hope they just missed the disagree button.

Megaton5031d ago

Miranda's a brown bagger. Jack has a way better face, and Tali probably does too.

otherZinc5031d ago

Any site that could find anything undesirable about Miranda isn't credible at all.

Thanks to whatever site or blog this is, you're stupid, period.

Also, this is how stupid the Mods are at N4G to allow such an article. Some things are opinion, Miranda's Hotttness is Fact!

Odin7775030d ago

Miranda's voice actor is actually pretty damn hot (the actress in the tv show Chuck).

Redrum0595030d ago

wat about twinkle from the zelda games.
i hate that guy... thing?...

mastiffchild5030d ago

LOL@all the comments on the site! Why does someone have tro be gay just for having a different opinion over a female character or, more pertinently, for stating a few male characters aren't very pretty?

I think this kind of thing shows how insecure a few gamers are with their sexuality myself. I mean, seriously, do you NEED to be a homosexual top know whether your fellow man is an ugly or attractive fella? The article wasn't asking for, say, Marcus Fenix to turn him on and just criticised the cliches that surround these characters in most cases. Was any of it needed? No, but neither were the "fagbag" and "FAGGOT" comments from the readers. So the author doesn't find the same collection of pixels as pretty as you-t doesn't mean he wants to sleep with men.

To me the issue is that Miranda just doesn't have the delicacyh of feature that the real life lady has. the jawline and eyebrows being a bit too strong on Miranda and causing a little manliness that we could have done well without. Saying she's a munter, though, is well unfair as Bioware actually had a decent go at replicating Yvonne's face but they just came up short.

Marcus Fenix of Gears of War cannot, at all, wear a normal shirt. Look at him. His wristis the same size as his neck. Is this some medical condition we need to be aware of?

DelbertGrady5031d ago

He's modelled after this guy.

mikeslemonade5031d ago

It's a side effect of the Unreal Engine 3.

starchild5031d ago

Stupid comment. All kinds of characters have been created using Unreal Engine 3 and they look nothing alike. Miranda looks nothing like Batman who in turn looks nothing like Trip from Enslaved. It's up to the designers and artists, not the engine.

corneliuscrust5031d ago (Edited 5031d ago )

things like that on the ENGINE.

It's a TOOLSET. The DEVS make the assets. The engine didn't build the models or textures.

Megaton5031d ago (Edited 5031d ago )

He reminds me of Chris Redfield in RE5, they both suffer from the same Liefeldian proportions.

RedPawn5031d ago

The Hoe from Velvet Assassin.

-MD-5031d ago

The main character? You think she's ugly? For shame.

Alos885031d ago

I thought it was ugly the way she had a mode where she strutted around in hospital garb purely for the viewer's titillation.

Fade_Walker5031d ago

I think that the Entire cast of Oblivion looks a lot worse.

But there is no doubt that the case of Fallout 3 isn't easy on the eyes either.

TrevorPhillips5031d ago (Edited 5031d ago )

Mileena from MK, although she does have a hot body. It's just her face, it's a turn off

spooky2055030d ago

digging the skeletal lower pirahna face that eats you and spits your bones out look.

Kratos should be on this list. He has to be the toughest, ugliest, and angriest bastard in all of greece. Although despite this he GETS LAID IN EVERY SINGLE GAME! HAIL Kratos God of Booty. Clotho from GOW 2 is also a nice mention.

abe from the oddworld series should get a mention too. Prostitues from fable 2 (RIP boner). Oro from streetfighter 3. Sheeva from mortal kombat. The author of this article clearly hasnt witnessed ugly yet.

No Man's Sky Is Easily One Of Gaming's Greatest Comeback Stories

Despite No Man Sky's rocky launch, Hello Games managed to turn it into one of the best space exploration RPGs out there.

-Foxtrot3h ago

I hate the whole concept of "comeback story" because at the end of the day it doesn't remove the core issue we had in the first place, that we were lied to, it was disappointing and it launched with bare content to what was promised for years.

Any bad game can have a comeback story if it's supported enough after launch but for me if you launch in a terrible state then you had your chance. I can applaud you for what you've done after but at the end of the day there's not much of a choice since most gamers would blank your next product if you ditched your last game so fast, it's not about repairing the game but spending your time repairing gamers trust before you launch your next product otherwise it would be dead on arrival.

With these stories and the games being updated, the only way is up most of the time so of course it's going to improve the game and feel better over all, getting better and better as time passes. No Mans Sky, Sea of Thieves, Fallout 76 etc but then you have games like Anthem, Suicide Squad, Redfall and The Avengers where the devs just clearly moved on, now if they have another product people won't be as exited for it, I mean hell Guardians of the Galaxy was a great game but because of the Avengers it didn't help its sales since people were obviously still sour at that point.

I still think despite the improvements to games like No Mans Sky and Cyberpunk along with being better now overall the games are still not up there to what was promised and hyped as for years.

If we keep celebrating these “comeback stories” then unfortunately it only strongly supports the concept that these studios / publishers can continue to push half arsed broken products out for the sake of quick sales instead of waiting until they are fully finished. We need to condemn this awful behaviour or sadly we lose all voice and power as consumers.

Sonic18811h ago(Edited 1h ago)

I feel the same way about Cyberpunk 2077. I'm glad you mentioned that. I'm not a fan of comeback stories as well. But No man sky developer was a small indie team compared to CDPR. It's worse when it's coming from a AAA developer

Nacho_Z1h ago

"Any bad game can have a comeback story if it's supported enough after launch"

You make it sound so simple and easy. It's not. After release Hello Games poured countless hours into getting their game closer to what they originally wanted, without charging a penny to anyone. That's not normal.

The reason NMS and HG are held in such high esteem and calling them liars is a weak stance is the amount of work they've put into it, for free. They're not chasing a quick buck, they've dedicated their lives over the last few years to giving their fans the game everyone wanted.

-Foxtrot50m ago(Edited 35m ago)

They are liars though...

We are not revising history here, I'm sorry but we're not

They built this game up for years and they launched it knowing full well it wasn't up to scratch to what they originally showed off or hyped it up to be.

"They're not chasing a quick buck, they've dedicated their lives over the last few years to giving their fans the game everyone wanted"

And like I said above most of that comes from the fact that if they had just moved on straight away nobody would have supported their next game. They've washed most of that sour taste away after supporting No Mans Sky so now they are doing a new game which more people feel like they can support and get excited for.

Anyway how can you say "You make it sound so simple and easy. It's not" and then make the point that "Hello Games poured countless hours into getting their game closer to what they originally wanted, without charging a penny to anyone"

This means that if a small team like this can turn a game around then big AAA games like Suicide Squad, Redfall, Anthem and the like should have been able to do it no problem, oh but that's right they didn't want to put the time or effort into it. They can do it but some people just decide not to.

thorstein2h ago

I really enjoyed it at launch and had every trophy by August 2016.

The experience I had is no longer in the game: It was just me and my ship. It was a survival game and the feeling of loneliness in the universe was pervasive. There was no way to ruin too far from your ship and, in an emergency, you grenaded a hole in the ground to survive.

I miss that aspect, but since then, I love what they've done.

Hugodastrevas46m ago

I'd say it's THE definitive comeback story
