I should write my own letter to Microsoft telling them to fix:

1. A lack of a charging cable at all
2. The obsurdly loud disc drive and fan
3. No built in Wifi
4. Reduce the price of thier hardrives
5. Dashboard is too messy

my question is - what launch hardware issue? I have 3 of em and they all work as well as the day they where bought and I suspect that 99.9% of others who have launch day PS3s would say the same.
I will grant him that PSN didn't launch with as many features as XLive but it has progressively evolved at an amazing rate.

Actually there isn't an adapter that fully supports compatibility for all of the Guitar Hero games on ps2 and all of the ddr games. Of course there are adapters for ps2 dualshock controllers but not the guitars and dance pads thats what he was implying. The only one you can find doesn't support all the GH games and the HO/PO functions of each. This is something that also irritates me I am still hoping they make one that works so i can play my old GH games on my ps3.

For those of you who think the PS3 controller works fine, you misunderstood him completely. The IR thing is actually a pretty valid point. More than half of PS3 owners bought it mainly as a blue ray player and many probably have high end remotes like the author mentioned that only do IR.. I know my friend has this problem of not being able to control his ps3 with his IR universal remote. Why can't sony just release an IR usb port just like what the author said.

I actually much prefer using the bluetooth controller than an IR remote.
I don't even need to look at it, or to hold it or to point at the PS3: I can just drop my hand on it on the couch and "touch control" it, even using the joysticks for ffw or rwd. it's waaaaaaay better.

Yeah, besides the update time (which is long the first time, but how often do you do it anyways), all his other complains are simply resolved with simply buying a cheap adapter. That's why USB is good.

Actually my ps3 controller will work from across the street lol.. one time to prove a point i went across the street and wrapped the BD Remote up in a king size comforter laid on top of it and it still turned on the system lol.... I read that whole mess of literature and came away with nothing useful.
1: IR port. I have heard few ask for it, but is it REALLY that important?
2: You can DL the updates on PC, transfer to Mem card and install from there (Even on non 60gb models).
3: I can see mine fine on the 32" tv except the FINE PRINT.
4: Really? They give you a cable to charge your controller. Want to play while you charge? Buy a longer one.
5: Why? Seriously, why. But, if so, Radio Shack has you covered.

Pshhh I have more valid annoying things than the stuff he listed (most of which can be easily solved by looking around in his case).

1. Videos need a continuous playback toggle, the PSP has it why doesn't the PS3?
2. On the video topic, also need to be able to create custom folders/playlists. It's implemented for music, why not videos?
3. The browser needs to be updated with the latest flash version.

I keep full TV show seasons/series on my PS3 HD and the first two would make it a whole lot easier to keep things intact. Also I can leave it running and it'll automatically go to the next episode. That way when I'm working with it playing in the background, I won't have to be interrupted to go to the next episode (sounds trivial but it is irritating).

I could add that they need a cleaner/more simplified dashboard....I know too many people that dont understand any of the settings etc....and seem to have trouble getting their surround sound to work in games and movies....they had to call tech support etc and they didnt even know what to do.....they had to do a bunch of crap to get it workn eventually....

for a tech company they really dont know how to make simplistic settings in their systems.....im sure most of us know how to use it but for normal everyday people they would not have a clue about what most of the system settings are or mean

Oh hah, I've been used to the XMB from the PSP so I'm too used to it, it's pretty intuitive once you learn all the nuances. Hell I can navigate the PS3 XMB without even seeing what I'm doing. I learned that for setting remote play quickly and for turning off the system without having to switch the video source back to the PS3. That Bible of a manual the system comes with does tell everything though.

I personally saw a secondhand fax of a photocopy of my wifes girlfriends brothers sisters roommates cousins fathers former real-estate agent/exotic dancers leaked list of firmware 3.6 and it Teleports and does EVERYTHING else listed here.

It also has an advanced 360 emulator which uses only one spu. When asked if this was possible, Sony engineers said "Of Course! How many would we need to just blink 3 lights?"

2). My system updates take about 6 minutes. Maybe I'm just patient?
3). Possibly valid. I've seen a PS3 hooked up to an SDTV once, and the font size was definitely a bit small.
4. 4 feet is enough for me, but they can always just buy a longer cable (very cheap, available everywhere) or just hook it up to a PC.
5. I AGREE! It's so hard to play Amplitude and Frequency with the DualShock3. Nay, impossible. The triggers simply ruin it unfortunately. But I know I'm in the minority since most games are actually fine with the trigger system.

That is the lamest complaint list I have ever read. If this is the best he could come up with, I guess Sony did everything right! #2 and #4 are only "out-of-the-box" type issues. The first system update takes a while (not nearly as long as it did for him in my case) and the short USB cable (sitting on the floor waiting for it to charge, LOL) is only a problem if you lack fore-thought to charge your controller before or after you play AND only own one controller! No IR port, come on! You might as well complain that they included the Blu-Ray player and now I have to replace my Beta-Max collection! Font problem? Buy some glasses, buddy! I do kind of understand the DS2 adapter thing, especially with GH, but this is no big deal for me and I would guess, the vast majority of other gamers as well. Lame!

A longer USB cable might be nice, system update sometimes take too long to download and I have no idea why, 1st party IR converter should be made available from Sony. 1. Personally I hate the downloading and then waiting for things to Install.
-Why because my Xbox 360 does it better. No install required, You download DEMOs..etc and Click PLAY.

2. The USB cable could be longer.
-Why because with my Xbox 360, I'm able to play at a comfortable distance, while it charges, in my hand.

3. Work on that controller.
-why because after like 2hrs my hand start to cramp up. If you have big hands the dual shock and the spacing is too cramp. Especially the shoulder/trigger and the placement of the analogs.

4. In-game functions
-Why because my Xbox 360 does it and does it well.(Yes i'm aware of the next firmware)

5.No Headset/HDMI cable Included
-Why because when I bought my Elite, everything was there and since XBL is more established, I was able to put on my headset and communicate. I know not everyone is gonna go out and get headsets on the PS3. Bundling it is the way to go.

These are my Gripes when I first bought the console, but some of these still remain and will never be fixed and some eventually, when PSN matures. It's easy for me to Compare and Contrast since I have the other Boxes. Others not so much. this guy feels a certain way then whatever, the whole controller part is kind MEH IMO.

We all know Sony doesn't play that well with 3rd-party because it competes in so many markets and makes its own proprietary stuff, like MEMstick and others things..all part of making EXTRA money.

1. Xbox 360 and the noise factor
-Why because my PS3 is so so much silent and only chirps after long sessions, notice I said chirp not Whine.

2. XBL Pricing Structure
-Why because Yes PSN is free and if Sony can manage to do everything my XBL does+ then it's a no-brainer. Sh^t cost too much on XBL, with themes and such. I never buy them. I just play games.

3.MS Games and Studios
-Why because Sony has amassed a strong brand name through it's new IP's as well as bringing new games to the mix that falls under the Sony Brand. MS does have great games but mostly from 3rd-parties. If they wanna solidify it's name, they are gonna need some more studios and more Game the fanbase can associate the Xbox brand with. Like a games that won't Jump Ship and go Multi.

4. Controller and the D-PAD
-Why because Sony has one of the Best D-PADs for years, but not best controller.(see previous post)

5.RROD

right now, i have three seperate remotes in my living room. first is for my vizio lcd tv, second is for my sony a/v system, third is for my ps3. eventually, i plan upgrading to a sony bravia lcd tv. once i do, i can use one remote for the tv and for the a/v system. i'm still left with two remotes though. i'm a little confussed at why sony didn't include an ir port on the ps3. i can understand if they feel that bluetooth is the future and i would be okay if their tv's and other devices started becoming bluetooth compatible, then i wouldn't have a problem. but sony is an entertainment company. everything they do, is geared towards enjoyment and entertainment. a person could set up their entire home theater with sony products (and i'm sure that there are some how already do) and control everything with one remote. except for the ps3. it's a very minor thing, but to me it doesn't feel like it fits with the whole sony domination thing. and i wasn't aware of the device mentioned by the first post. that would be an adequete solution for the situation. does anyone know if it will only work with a ps2 remote, or any universal ir remote? but the rest of this guys "complaints" are just the ramblings of a lazy cheapskate imo. <"

As far as the system updates being long, for me they aren't long because I download the update from the Playstation Website, save it to a Flash Drive then upload it to my PS3, and the update process takes about 5-10 minutes.

I wish background downloading actually downloaded in the background. Once I click background DL, pretty much anything you do interrupts the download. Why can't it download while I'm watching a movie? Why can't it download after I turn the system off? I hate that.

I do wish the charge cord was longer, but I just use my laptop. The ps store is much improved from where it was, but is still quite slow.

I do think that the system updates are really slow, but it's not like you have to do it all the time. Once they add in-game XMB, hopefully a lot of gripes will be assuaged.

His points are valid for a first time PS3 owner. Once you've owned the system for a while, the points are moot. However, rather than a list of flaws I see the list as one of differences; differences that are evident if you've ever owned another system (360, PS2, Wii, etc). The five annoying things listed aren't annoying to me and many others. Also, criticism doesn't always have to be taken so negatively. The old PSN store was slow and confusing; the new one is just as good or better than the Xbox Live Marketplace. I'm sure Sony learned from their mistakes in making a new PSN store. Case in point, is that the PS3 has come a long way and will continue to get better.

1 month after i got my ps3 i went and bought a charging station, the cables are useful to a point, then they are just more clutter.

He only has 3 semi valid points in the article the lack of a ir port is an issue with some people, which they have workarounds out for it.

Updating takes next to no time at all, downloading the update when everyone and their dog is also downloading it is a bit of a slowass but you will live.

No ps2 controller adaptors work 100% will guitar hero 1 and 2 and other ilk, it sucks yeah but thats life.

My two biggest complaints:

Lack of games...especially RPGs (FF titles alone will not fill the void)

Possible fix: Sony should really do something to HELP third party devs with their tech. Maybe even give away all the coding their first party studios used to make their games. This would help with the other problem. It's obvious some devs are turned off by the difficulty.

More compatible software. Many common cameras, etc are not compatible with the PS3.

I have a logitech Harmony remote and an IR sensor would have been nice. Old tech or not, its really cheap and could have been installed for just this reason. But you know, I got over it.

As for the cable, the guy talks about how easy it is to switch out the batteries packs from his charger or plug up his charging cable while playing his 360. I wonder if he remembers that he had to buy all of those things extra. They didn't come with my 360, I had to spend a whole lot more money on those things than I would for the 10 foot USB cable for the ps3. Thing is, I have had so many things (camera's, mp3 players, etc, etc) that come with the exact same type of cable, I just looked thru my drawer of cables and found a longer one. I would say its a nice thing that sony used a universal format.

When I saw this, I thought I would read his review with an open mind.... and at first I saw the writers point of view, but then it only took me a few seconds to realize that EVERYTHING he commented on is/was so easly fixable.

The chord issue... come on really? extend it with an adapter, or charge it when the PS3 is off... at least it's wireless and does not need batteries.
The slow update process, again, first he complains about how he hopes that Sony ironed everything out, and then he's surprised that after 2 years he has to wait 20 mins for a few updates to the firmware... what does he want? Everything to be fixed and ironed out in a 2 MB patch? And if he's connecting wirelessly the downloads are sometimes slower, but at least the PS3 is wireless out of the box.

IR?? People still use that?? Grab a new Logitch IR/Bluetooth remote problem solved, those things are SICK! Or as others have stated, there are plenty of way around the problem. A very minor problem at that.

The font is too small. The only people I have heard complain about the font are those using older SD TV sets or people who are playing it on a PC monitor.... 32" LCD or larger, and there should be no problems, unless you're 20 feet away.

I see where he's coming from, but totally think he had to dig deep to think of those problems... because IMO they are all VERY VERY minor ones. I am sure his boss wanted him to find 5 problems with the PS3 and if this is all he could come up with that that's pretty damn good.

#1- Certain TV that support 1.3 HDMI allow you to control a HDMI device hooked up to the TV via HDMI 1.3 threw a tv remote.

#3- If the guy is worried about #3 maybe he should switch his resolution down to 720P, or 480P. The higher the resolution the smaller the font size I notice.

#4- Buy a couple extra controllers and have one on charging while your playing
