The PS4 & Xbox 720 Are Not About Gaming

Step into gaming circles and a similar, equally odd, debate is happening. It may have taken until their third and fourth generations respectively and their franchises have aged far better than subsequent Jaws films, but there is growing support for the notion the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 are not about gaming. What’s more, in casting their affection away from what should arguably be their primary focus, both may also be chewed up and spat out for it.

This isn't smart at all, of course they were made for gaming why wouldn't they. That is why they call it a 'gaming console' because it plays games. Just because they add social aspects doesn't mean it isn't for gamers, the social aspects is what helps you play with your friends and have fun because without it, gaming would be less fun. If we followed this article then the people who do not use the social aspects just bought a console to NOT play games. People without internet can play games without social features and still have fun.

The most confusing article EVER so far.

Actually cars are not meant for driving.

silverbeld4043d ago

@ylwzx3

WTF are you smoking?

PS4 is all about gaming. Stupid article wants to spin in favour of the next xbox, cause its a TV setup box.

V0LT4043d ago

Lol obviously im joking!

sikbeta4043d ago

The era of gaming machines that only do gaming are over long ago, to be precise 8 years ago, PS360 are more than just gaming systems and the next systems will do even more...

hahahaha looooooool sorry i was gone say something, forgot what it was, oh yeah LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL at this article -.-

admiralvic4043d ago

Anyone else like that "Trusted Reviews" posted this? I mean if they can't figure out that consoles will do more than play games (though thats what they do first and foremost), why exactly would I trust them with a review?

jcnba284043d ago

All of these silly extras sony and microsoft are throwing into their systems are making them less and less appealing to me. Who the hell wants to post their gaming updates on facebook?? That is such a dumb feature.

So far the Wii U is the only next gen system that focuses on what a console is meant to do, play games!

iGAM3R-VIII4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

*sigh*

"Who the hell wants to post their gaming updates on facebook?? That is such a dumb feature."

You can obviously disable those features, Sony said that

Also, I quite like the features Sony added, the share button is an AMAZING feature, the live stream feature is good, the social aspects are good, and I am sure the 720 will be the same as well (hopefully since we do not know anything official). Your comment is just stupid, a console is meant to play games whether it is made from any manufacturer or a homeless man.

And I do not mean to start a war but the Wii U isn't doing as well as it should/could/would be. It lacks those IP's and third party support so until I see that then your comment is merely valid.

You are just trolling

Mr_Writer854043d ago

Sony showed off new games, and have gotten alot of developer and indie support.

So you statement is flawed.

Plus doesn't the WiiU have Netflix? So it can do more then play games. But it provides other things. Just like the PS3/4?

S2Killinit4042d ago

I really do want to be able to press a button and show all my friends when I score a goal on another friend.

delboy4043d ago

If you build a controller with a share button that's the first sign that games are on second place.
A start/pause button is for games a share button clearly is not!
If you want to be social, go out with your friends in real life if you have any.
For those who have rl friends, couch multilayer is the king, they don't need a share button.

brave27heart4043d ago

I think you'll find the share button was a developer request. If people can share videos of cool moments in their games in seconds then its basically free advertising. Which in turn means higher game sales.

Plus theres the fact that its not mandatory. No ones forcing you to use it. The PS3 has facebook integration right now (under account management on the xmb) but you dont have to use it. I dont.

Then theres the fact that for around 60% of their reveal Sony talked about and showed games. Lots of games.

Im not concerned about Sont being about games. They clearly are. I'll reserve judgement on MS until they've actually announced something.

Snookies124042d ago

Why would you not want to record amazing things you've done/seen in games? That way when you have an awesome gaming story to tell friends, you don't just have to tell them, you can show them.

marinelife94042d ago

Seems like one actually is meant for gaming. The other seems to be for watching tv.

ElitaStorm4042d ago

and the article is submitted by you?

Dee_914042d ago

lol i know right
I guess just to show how these articles always try to twist stuff in MS favor.
Like exclusive games not being important anymore lol.

smashcrashbash4043d ago

Where exactly did you get that the PS4 is not for gaming? The PS3 had lots of features and was still primarily about gaming. So what makes you think the PS4 won't be the same?

admiralvic4043d ago

The funny thing is that this is just natural progression...

As early as the Sega Saturn / PS1 (they could play CD's) we've had consoles do other things. Since then we've had plenty of examples of systems that could do other things, yet were still gaming systems. Seems silly to call attention to, like saying a Galaxy Player isn't about MP3's, but being a cell phone with no cellular aspect.

Double_Oh_Snap4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

Yeah... no.
https://us.playstation.com/...

Worth mentioning... there entire conference was focused on the gamer. Not apps or social connectivity. Yes social stuff was in there but what did it revolve around? Yup games.

iGAM3R-VIII4043d ago

Quote from site: "The Best Place To Play"

If that isn't enough for consoles to be about gaming, I do not know what is

Why o why4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

This article sounds like damage control to me. Painting the ps4 and 720 with the same brush doesn't make sense.....sony have always wanted to own the space under your tv AND that tv in fact...They have always been about media BUT they do gaming consoles very well as thats the playstation's main purpose.

There will be games on the ps4 and loads of them because that has always been the playstations main function.

Sony dont tend to lock ips away for a whole gen or slow down because a new gen is beckoning. Look elsewhere for that type of behaviour. Their track record kinda backs that up.

ichimaru4043d ago

yeah that 15 min speel about social features had little to do with gaming.

iGAM3R-VIII4043d ago

the entire conference was about 2 hours so 15mins of 2 hours isn't much. The rest of the 1hrs and 45mins was gaming and that 15mins was social so please tell me how it was mostly not gaming

ichimaru4042d ago

dude I didn't saythe conference wasn't about gaming. Sony made that clear, I won't sit here and pretend that they didn't go on a tangent for a moment to show off some social features thwt ms will no doubt get trolled for

Wizziokid4043d ago

"The PS4 & Xbox 720 Are Not About Gaming"

Did you miss the Sony presentation on PS4?

sure we can't said anything about the NextBox but the PS4 is defiantly about gaming.

GetSnooked4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

"PS4 is defiantly about gaming. "

I sure hope this isn't the next "I could care less"...

No Man's Sky Is Easily One Of Gaming's Greatest Comeback Stories

Despite No Man Sky's rocky launch, Hello Games managed to turn it into one of the best space exploration RPGs out there.

-Foxtrot10h ago

I hate the whole concept of "comeback story" because at the end of the day it doesn't remove the core issue we had in the first place, that we were lied to, it was disappointing and it launched with bare content to what was promised for years.

Any bad game can have a comeback story if it's supported enough after launch but for me if you launch in a terrible state then you had your chance. I can applaud you for what you've done after but at the end of the day there's not much of a choice since most gamers would blank your next product if you ditched your last game so fast, it's not about repairing the game but spending your time repairing gamers trust before you launch your next product otherwise it would be dead on arrival.

With these stories and the games being updated, the only way is up most of the time so of course it's going to improve the game and feel better over all, getting better and better as time passes. No Mans Sky, Sea of Thieves, Fallout 76 etc but then you have games like Anthem, Suicide Squad, Redfall and The Avengers where the devs just clearly moved on, now if they have another product people won't be as exited for it, I mean hell Guardians of the Galaxy was a great game but because of the Avengers it didn't help its sales since people were obviously still sour at that point.

I still think despite the improvements to games like No Mans Sky and Cyberpunk along with being better now overall the games are still not up there to what was promised and hyped as for years.

If we keep celebrating these “comeback stories” then unfortunately it only strongly supports the concept that these studios / publishers can continue to push half arsed broken products out for the sake of quick sales instead of waiting until they are fully finished. We need to condemn this awful behaviour or sadly we lose all voice and power as consumers.

Sonic18818h ago(Edited 8h ago)

I feel the same way about Cyberpunk 2077. I'm glad you mentioned that. I'm not a fan of comeback stories as well. But No man sky developer was a small indie team compared to CDPR. It's worse when it's coming from a AAA developer

Nacho_Z8h ago

"Any bad game can have a comeback story if it's supported enough after launch"

You make it sound so simple and easy. It's not. After release Hello Games poured countless hours into getting their game closer to what they originally wanted, without charging a penny to anyone. That's not normal.

The reason NMS and HG are held in such high esteem and calling them liars is a weak stance is the amount of work they've put into it, for free. They're not chasing a quick buck, they've dedicated their lives over the last few years to giving their fans the game everyone wanted.

-Foxtrot8h ago(Edited 7h ago)

They are liars though...

We are not revising history here, I'm sorry but we're not

They built this game up for years and they launched it knowing full well it wasn't up to scratch to what they originally showed off or hyped it up to be.

"They're not chasing a quick buck, they've dedicated their lives over the last few years to giving their fans the game everyone wanted"

And like I said above most of that comes from the fact that if they had just moved on straight away nobody would have supported their next game. They've washed most of that sour taste away after supporting No Mans Sky so now they are doing a new game which more people feel like they can support and get excited for.

Anyway how can you say "You make it sound so simple and easy. It's not" and then make the point that "Hello Games poured countless hours into getting their game closer to what they originally wanted, without charging a penny to anyone"

This means that if a small team like this can turn a game around then big AAA games like Suicide Squad, Redfall, Anthem and the like should have been able to do it no problem, oh but that's right they didn't want to put the time or effort into it. They can do it but some people just decide not to.

thorstein10h ago

I really enjoyed it at launch and had every trophy by August 2016.

The experience I had is no longer in the game: It was just me and my ship. It was a survival game and the feeling of loneliness in the universe was pervasive. There was no way to ruin too far from your ship and, in an emergency, you grenaded a hole in the ground to survive.

I miss that aspect, but since then, I love what they've done.

Hugodastrevas8h ago

I'd say it's THE definitive comeback story

TheGamingHounds6h ago

Final Fantasy 14 takes that one imho
