The Witcher 4 — Unreal Engine 5 Tech Demo

CD PROJEKT RED and Epic Games come together at the State of Unreal to show an early development Unreal Engine 5 tech demo for The Witcher 4 — showcasing some of the innovative technology and features that will help bring the game’s open world to life. Keep in mind this isn’t gameplay of The Witcher 4 itself, but a deep dive into the technological foundation of the new Witcher saga.

Looks amazing, and running on PS5. Next-gen aka current-gen games are finally starting become the norm.

pwnmaster300021d ago

That’s what I’ve been saying.
Is long over due but I feel like we are starting to get the real next gen experience. Devs can finally go all out and not worry about the last gen. Can’t wait to see what devs can really do with the ps5/Series consoles

fr0sty21d ago

We are still being held back by Series S, and Switch 2 will also end up becoming that "lowest common denominator" moving forward as well. We still can't have any experiences that don't fit into their memory, or processing capabilities, if it is a multiplatform game.

ABizzel121d ago

@fr0sty

The Series S isn’t holding anything back anymore. The PS5 is the target hardware for pretty much all developers making both platforms. Games are flat out skipping Xbox all together if they’re forcing parity clause, otherwise, developers are simply porting their game down as much as possibly to lower platforms to sub HD resolutions and using DLSS on switch to get decent image quality, and FSR 2 to get blurry quality but playable performance.

We are finally in the prioritization of the PS5 (and SX) for this generation.

Lightning7721d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Unfortunately it's an actual tech demo. Meaning its not the real Witcher 4/gameplay.

Sounds like Cyber Punk alll over again. Who knows how it'll actually look.

Michiel198920d ago

@frosty not this bs again. if a console can be held back by weaker consoles, then pc can be held back by your favorite plastic box as well. You're part of the problem then. Are you taking any responsibility in partaking in it?

Or you just spouting nonsense again because you can't stand other gaming devices, I wonder which it is!

The UE5 haters gone silent all of sudden. Ciri haters also silent. Good!

Game looks GLORIOUS!

DAY ONE!!!

Eonjay21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

And thats just on base PS5. I can't wait to see it running on the Pro. And yes I understand with a huge boat load of cash, you can get it running even better on a PC, but this is absolutely fine for most.

Proper 4k upload https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Profchaos21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

There was never any ciri haters no one could hate her if they actually played the games.

It's literally continuing where the 3rd game ended and the logical step

VenomUK21d ago

Just imagine what Unreal Engine 5 could do for Halo on PS5.

Super pretty walking simulator they've shown!

milohighclub21d ago

Walking sim with 100 skeletal meshes with cloth physics running 60fps raytracing on base model.

RaidenBlack20d ago

FYI, CDPR later clarified ... this is just tech demo ... not representative of final gameplay with the whole open world loaded. Its just a vertical slice of what's possible with limited world background.

Palitera20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Yeah, from your comments, it seems like the 3 of us agree.
It looks like those "games" that amateurs do when they discover premade assets: import everything into the "game" and call it a pretty "game", without one second of meaningful gameplay.
Think for a moment what you'd be seeing on this video if "The Witcher" was not involved (for marketing purposes). It's just bullshots that will be obviously (apparently not for everyone) downgraded for any actual game release.

MrDead21d ago

Wow, CD Project. If it looks this amazing on the standard PS5 I'm looking forward to seeing it on my 5090.

Looking forward to playing this. The Witcher series is one of the best in gaming, nothing quite has that feel. Looks like I'll be playing Witcher 3 again before this releases.

HectixRose21d ago

Yup, but I'm probably gonna be upgrading from 5090 to 6090, so it's be glorious on 6090.

andy8521d ago

This is 60 fps and RT on a base PS5? Damn. Im not even worried about the CP fiasco. They've learnt their lesson after their losses there.

Tacoboto21d ago

Lesson learned - release a broken game, profit already before the broken release, [time and patches], repeat.

Don't be fooled by a pretty tech demo especially when at least two of the new functions shown in this UE 5.6 update are either Experimental, or intended for 5.7 (Nanite Foliage). We do not know performance or stability of what'll be the actual game, based on this tech demo designed for a short live presentation.

Obscure_Observer21d ago

I think they´re pretty confident on what they can possibly achieve regarding the UE5´s implementation. Especially considering that the new Cyberpunk will also be powered by Unreal technology.

Tacoboto21d ago

They presented confidence in their own tech before Cyberpunk released.

andy8521d ago (Edited 21d ago )

They offered refunds. Imo they made up for it eventually. I don't consider there anything to worry about this time considering the vast majority of the issues were last gen because it couldn't handle the game and there's no last gen version this time. They lost a fortune last time they won't make thay mistake again

Tacoboto21d ago

They lost a fortune, what?

They announced on the day or so before release that they profited from preorders alone.

Lightning7721d ago

I'd say they did learn something. Honest PR. As I said up top they released a statement saying that demo wasn't representative of their actual game. That right there shows they're setting the expectations not just early but honestly. Before they just ran with it and eating it up and bit them hard at launch. I'd say they're off to a good start PR wise anyway.

I hope you are right and a their future games launch fully polished ready to play but until their next launch all we have to go on is their last launch. Many forget that Witcher 3 needed bunch of patches to make it what it is today, but it sure didn't launch like that

Hereandthere21d ago

My xbox series X cant wait! looks amazing!!!

Reaper22_21d ago

Same here. It's looks fantastic and hopefully it uses dolby atmos because the series x supports it.

Eonjay21d ago

Atmos is now supported on all Series machines and PS5 machines fyi.

SimpleSlave21d ago

Hopefuly they fix their inventory problem. Between The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk, this has been one of the worst aspect of their games. Pressing that Inventory button is scarier than any Silent Hill game for sure.

The Witcher 4 reveal might just be a tech demo, but the potential is there for stable performance

CD Projekt Red showcasing The Witcher 4 might be a tech demo, but it shows the potential of what Unreal Engine 5.6 can do for the game.

Nitrowolf219d ago

"Potential" as in the same potential every major UE upgrade tech demo shows with insane visuals and fluid FPS?

Sonyslave319d ago

Still waiting on a game with the scope & size as that demo back in 2020 🤣 smooth 60fps with raytracing.

Lightning7719d ago

That's what I said. Not buying into tech demo hype and marketing.

Where's the flying desert girl type of technology we were promised 5 years ago?

cloganart18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

As somebody who has worked with one of these. I can tell you that the tech IS there in the engine when we work on that stuff; but only if a developer chooses to use it.

Hence why we call it a tech demonstration. And when that demo comes out it takes a while for people to adapt to the new stuff, and sometimes has to be built up from the ground with all the new additions in mind (such as the World Partitions, Lumen and Nanite that launched with UE5)

Gotta question the devs moreso as to why they can't do a thing shown in a tech demo.

RaidenBlack18d ago

UE5? stable perf? from 'PC'Guide dot com?
owkayyyy ....

LightofDarkness18d ago

I just can’t fathom why they tossed out a stable, performant and beautiful engine to move to Unreal. I get there’s a greater talent pool immediately available for it, but god damn.
