The sequel to God of War has been delayed to 2022

I said this from the beginning. God of War has almost always been a Spring release, and with the hardware shortages it just makes more sense to push it to Spring 2022 to get the next fiscal year started or end the 2021 fiscal year with a bang.

Horizon is the only concern now, it could be a holiday 2021 release, but I wouldn't be surprised if they move it to an early 2022 title like Janurary / February. Regardless just release these great games in good conditions when they're ready, and I can't wait to see the performance jump we get 2 - 3 years down the road with games already looking as good as they are, when the SSD's are being utilized to stream worlds, and resolution scaling.

I did just that with spider-man mm. got it on the ps4 because i couldnt get a 5. Was planning to do the same for horizon but now I have the 5 (and it came with the 5 ver of SM:MM) so i gave my son my pro and copy of MM. it's nice to know they will continue to support the previous platform, esp since the current is going to continue to be strapped through to next year.

Maybe they are sticking with tradition. Ever since the first GoW on PS2 we have had at least two releases per platform / generation. GoW 1 & 2 on PS2. GoW Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta on PSP. GoW 3 & Ascension on PS3. GoW reboot and its sequel on PS4 sounds about right. Plus it isnt like a PS4 version is going to take anything away from the PS5. Both will be built to the individual strengths of their respected hardware.

So what are the odds they will do the same with GT7? We know it will run on PS4 but they could hold it over specifically for the PS5. All other releases had odd number first release on the platform with an even number finish for the generation. GT1 & 2 (PS1), GT3 & 4 (PS2), GT5 & 6 (PS3), GTS (PS4), GT7 & 8 (PS5). Only Sport was the black sheep, but then again it wasnt meant to be a proper numbered release as it was more online and FIA centered.

Many have had a 'XX scheduled release only to be pushed to into March of the following year. There may be the exception to this but every single one that I can recall has been pushed to March. I remember Barlog expressing how the sequel would take less time to complete due to the bulk of the first game was all around building the engine and getting all the toolsets in place to make the game. The thing about Halo infinite is that it's made with 60 fps in mind, even tho I would love if they had a 30 fps mode to match the 2018 graphics, which would give horizon 2 a run for it's money. Well, yeah they should, at PS5 buildup they were indicating all new 1st party games will be PS5 only, hence the "we believe in generations" marketing line, now they have back tracked, and are still supporting PS4 for at least 2 years.

Xbox were clear, they said no 1st party Series exclusives for at least 2 years after launch, but xbox got bashed for not supporting "generations" but your giving Sony a pass?

@JEECE. The PS3 wasn't impossible to find this far out from launch. Releasing games exclusively on PS3 was a marketing tactic to convince players to buy into the new platform (which was struggling at the time) for exclusive experiences.

The PS5 is different, the demand is already there and overwhelming, Sony can't make enough supply to meet it. So releasing an exclusive game to PS5 has little financial or marketing benefit for the hardware itself, it only prevents potential software sales.

@Foxtrot: People knew, prepared, and have shown up in droves to purchase a console that sells out in a fraction of a second anytime it shows up. This has nothing to do with preparation from the consumer, the consumer is prepped. There just is no supply for them to buy.

Sony's heavy hitting exclusives will not be PS5 only until the player base has reached levels they deem sufficiently profitable. That's really all there is to it.

From a player standpoint that's a good thing, imagine how frustrating it would be to not be able to play the next Horizon or God of War because you can't find a new console.

Yep. Whatever minimal justification there is for cross gen in 2021 is certainly gone in 2022. This is the equivalent of Bloodborne being developed for PS3. It is only new to you because you take notice of it on PS. It has been around for a while. 360/XBO had several cross gen games like Forza horizon 2 and Titanfall and Destiny. And they did so because the x86 tech made it easy to transition and make them at the same time. PS2/3 and PS3/4 didnt have that because of obvious differences but PS4/5 do. So... this was expected and is a good thing, not bad. It means those who havent upgraded can still play the new releases while those who have will get the best version of those new releases. there is nothing unreasonable with my comment, we know there are certain restrictions when it comes to the performance gap between platform generations. The differences between games such as Spider-man, Horizon or GoW will not be as pronounced as the differences between the games I mentioned previously.

"You fools" lol I've been a Sony fanboy forever. I supported PS3 in 2006 when all the nubs got hyped over Dead Rising and Gears of War. But even overconfident 2006 Sony at least made games designed for their new console. Uncharted wasn't cross gen with PS2, despite PS2's massive install base.

The ps3 had an entirely different architecture and it was a big hurdle to make the games cross Gen. You gotta realize the ps2 was actually revolutionary and was made for games to be fully 3D. The ps3 was made years later with the cell processor that was supposed to go mainstream and disrupt the market. It was technically superior to the ps4's processor, but no one liked it. Furthermore, the ps2 was ancient at that time. After ps2 launched, the Xbox launched a fear years later, and before the ps3 launched, the xbox 360 launched. The ps2 was great at launch, but it aged quickly.

I get it makes business sense to cater to the previous gen especially with PS4’s numbers, but as undeniably great I expect it to be on PS5, it’s undeniable that PS4 will hold it back. I hope I’ll be proven wrong.

Let me guess, GoW PC version announcement incoming. Since the sequel to Horizon and GoW is releasing on PS4 I guess the PC crowd can rejoice bcs it will come to that platform in future. Also since Gow Ragnarok isn't PS5 only there won't be any SSD moments, what a bloody shame, so no battle with Heimdall on the Bifrost which during the battle you get transported to different places such as Egypt, Japan, the Moon, etc.

I was hoping that God of War 2 would do be doing something that the PS4 simply could not handle.

I’m looking forward to seeing if it will end up looking held back. IMO, Horizon 2 looked a little held back. (Still very impressive, just not jaw-dropping throughout like Killzone 2 “gameplay”)

At the very least, I think it’s safe to assume that ND’s next SP game will show what boundaries the ps5 was designed to push.

I am a fortunate owner of a ps5 and a series x and I'm very happy to have them, but I'm getting a bit tired of things with both. For xbox, it still doesn't have a single first party title of note and won't for at least a year after the launch of series x. With Sony, it's having some of its biggest franchises development hampered by also having to be made to run on the ps4.

Horizon I get...I even understand God of War for much the same reason because in order to deliver another game in that franchise so quickly, they will be reusing the game engine. Fine. But I'm really hoping this is not going to be an ongoing trend for Sony first party exclusives. Ratchet and Returnal give me hope that will not be the case. Hopefully going forward any Sony first party games in development (Gran Turismo excluded) will be fully looking to utilize the capabilities of the ps5. If the next game from Naughty Dog or the next Spider-Man is also going to be on ps4, Sony is going to face a considerable backlash. Gamers do not forget. It may not hurt them much this generation, but I for one will take all things into consideration for the future.

I do get the delays and if ain't done then please delay it. Seems though these release times, years, dates that developers put out for their games ya know a year, 2 yrs or more before they've completed the game are more say if the stars the Gods and publishers all get their chit together which non of them will then maybe, just maybe the games they produce won't see more than 2 delays with at least another year in the oven.

Idk why people like to compare that generation there was a much bigger jump from Xbox to 360/ ps2 to ps3 than this gen. Last gen can run all these games at a lower resolution (HD-FHD) 720-1080p and/or framerate (30fps-unlocked60) which is acceptable and hold up to this day

Well, on the bright side, this lessens the danger of getting framerate issues.
If there's PS4 version, then it means there's performance optimized version. With the history of GT and GoW games, we could be concerned about drops below 60fps or 120 in Gran Turismo. Now a stable 120fps is very likely unless they do something insanely stupid like releasing GT on PS4 as a 30fps game (or unlocked 35-45fps which is equally bad).
God of War will also surely have stable 60fps now.

Well, in terms of pulling the PS5 versions back, let's hope there are compromises for PS4 we didn't see yet in such huge titles as these two. I mean something like really abnoxious pop-in, or whole parts of rendering pipeline being replaced with something which doesn't really match the rest (as we've seen with Drive Club, when VR version was released) Another example would be photogrametry and geometry detail. You cannot go past a certain point or it starts to resemble PS2 era. I'd rather have such "broken" PS4 versions instead of getting PS5 versions being gimped down to what the tablet Jaguar CPUs can handle.

Xbox might have bigger hitters than Sony this Holiday season. Halo is going to either be amazing or suck. Hopefully it will be amazing. A full year delay. That is plenty of time to make it a much better experience than it would have been.

I was really looking forward to GOW and Horizon, but would rather Sony take its time with these amazing IP's. There is still a chance Horizon will release this Holiday.

I thought this was going to be the first Sony Studios game to push the PS5 hardware being next gen only. The delay doesn't bother me as I'd rather they finish the game and get it to where they want it.
