The system struggled largely because of poor branding and a weak launch lineup. The Wii was successful because it reached people who wouldn't normally invest in a console. The name "Wii U" is ambiguous and doesn't suggest a new generation of console while the launch line up did nothing to demonstrate why you should buy it if you already had already Wii.
They need to launch with titles like Mario Maker and Xenogears that make heavy use of the second screen...
