the Wii is outselling the PS3 by more than 5:1 there.
So estimates of North American HDTV penetration reaching 55% in 2010 may not have a huge effect on console sales trends.

This week in Japan Wii software outsold PS3 software 33:1 !!
Even 360 software outsold PS3 software!

The blogger isn't arguing for perfect photo-realism, just improved.
People will buy both.
but it's a huge step up.
Fantasy-themed games are better in 720p/1080p, but the creator of a realistic-themed game doesn't get the choice of 480i photo textures. I don't get what MS' stakes are. They could get bragging rights on "Photo-textures!", even if Sony is laughing about the 480i. Hardcore gamers have enough discernment to know what's what.
CON: How many developers were initially behind the Wiimote?
PRO: How many developers were behind the Cell CPU and a $600 price (yet put millions into development anyways).
Sure, to a videophile & hardcore gamer the tech is worth $600, but Sony won't find 105 million of such people to maintain the Playstation tradition. They can buy a Wii and seven games instead.
Sony should cut Blu-ray and add 4D-gaming!
Sorry, forgot the conclusion:
Therefore you should work your asses off to benefit the movie industry. (sarc/)
SPEs are really good at decoding movie encryption, and poor at running gaming software. MS and Nintendo don't own picture studios.
PS3 is good for the movie industry if it succeeds. Gaming takes a back seat.
in terms of popular, wide variety gaming. 360 has a lock on the hardcore market, but except for Arcade (which the general public isn't familiar with) has the reputation of a glorified duck shooter. To break 40 million units sold the 360 needs to bring a variety of genres in.
PS2 will be dethroned by Wii, and DVD will be dethroned by PayPerView.
I think the attach rate on Wii will be much higher than 360/PS3 because a lot of people get turned off by fifteen controls in a game quickly.
I see Wii selling 4X as many games as the competition.
Basically, the graphics have attracted people to gaming for years, and the controls sent them away.
Originally PS3 was going to have 3 Cells, which would have been multi-core. One Cell is one core with a stream processor (like a GPU) added. And its RAM seems to be nothing special.
How does 1080p+HDMI outweigh the PS3 having to trim out "huge, super-crisp environment textures and anti-aliasing"? For each gamer that will be able to enjoy 1080p there's 50 gamers that can enjoy huge textures. That gives the 360 top graphics award for 98% of homes (The Real World). PS3 is geared to the most niche of niche markets, and I'm sure they'll win in that market!
developers will lose half of their incentive to release and optimize games for the PS3. The real problem with Blu-ray for gaming is that PS3 will lose half the titles that could be released if PS3 was around $400. Kissing off 1000 to 2000 game titles is a problem even for those who can scrape up $600.
that the PS3 is not a console.
They've gone to great lengths to say it is anything else. They're probably not sure what they've made because it's such a mish-mash of objectives.
And a lot of people don't run PC games at their highest possible monitor resolution when they view less than two feet from the screen. Then why would they be so picky about HD if they're sitting six feet away?
