I couldn't agree more, and Ubisoft isn't really known for taking risks. There are some rumors mulling around that Assassin's Creed Origins will be taking cues from the Witcher - which isn't a bad thing, and it doesn't really hurt them if they do make a Witcher clone... heck it would be better than most Assassin's Creed games.

With the release of the new trailer - and now a visual confirmation that this cult is "heavily armed" and there's a short moment where there's trucks driving into town, Ubisoft might just be altering their "take over X base to get to the ending" and instead change it to "save X town to progress the plot". It's just an educated guess, but wouldn't really be surprising.

The amount of creative work he's made, both at Interplay and inExile, he has every right to go his own way. Whether or not he will come back to gaming, or if he's done for good, I wish him the best of luck. He really made some memorable titles.
With the price right now Far Cry 4 isn't a bad option, but there's better games out there, especially concerning first person shooters. If it's been on your backlog, and you are curious, give it a try, but don't be surprised that you'll be doing a lot of very repetitive missions.
