I'm a classic gamer myself, and unfortunately achievements/trophies are here to stay for good. I remember playing Sonic 3 and knuckles back in middle school for hours even after beating the game because it was that fun; now if someone plays it they "demand" some type of achievement/trophy just to attempt to play it.
Honestly I feel the same way you do about this gen being more of a letdown; yes the technology advanced, too bad the stories and fun factor of game...

As far as the article, the ONLY time I farm trophies is:
1. Waiting for a game to come out (between Feb and April I platted ME2)
2. PSN/Internet down
3. Win against a bet
4. Unlock certain things in a game (like UC2 for the special outfit I wont spoil for those tha...
At my job there's these 360 diehards who go on all day about how they can play "Halo" online for 8-12 hours a night and have "nothing to worry about." They all shut up when I asked em what offline games they play - one guy had the nerve to say "You buy a 360 to play with other people"
I actually had to stay at work a full day today because PSN is still down :/
