Demon souls did sell well. Thats why a sequel is being made.
I don't get on N4G much anymore because of all the trolls and fanboys, but PSP outsold the DS in the beginning. It was the lack of software for the PSP and Nintendogs +Brainage that caused the DS to explode.
Sony owns the IP. There was a rumor that Santa Monica were the ones working on it. But with GoW4 likely coming out in 2012, I dont know who would be working on it.
Nintendo had an initial shipment of 4 million. iirc, world wide they have sold around 1.5 million.

The game play was too simple and too easy. And the choices never did matter.
I say they leave the series for now and move on to another project. But considering its almost at 3 millions sales (if you believe VG) then MS will not let them do anything but a Fable 4
