Achievements are not a new concept. Insomniac games (that would be a Sony developer) has been putting an achievement system in their games for years.
Your comment would make sense if it were opposite day. Achievements/Trophies/Medals and the like give gamers new ways of playing. They promote healthy competition, they add replay value, and like it or not it is a truth of the human condition that we like getting rewards for our efforts. Why do you think gamers play games in the first place? It is because playing games gives us a sense of accomplishment that is harder to come by in the real world.
That is better than falling for an obvious fallacy. Name one 1st or 2nd party Sony game published by SCEI that has ever been released on the PC.

More evidence that we live in a blame society. You preorder a game and never pick it up and you don't remember that for an entire year and it's GameStop's fault for not holding your hand? No if you spend money somewhere you should be responsible enough to either pick the game up or have the money transferred to something else, or returned. They give you a receipt detailing how much money you gave them, they give you a phone call on the eve of the release, and I for one have never had a proble...
I will be less than pleased if they do not implement trophies, but I will still buy the game. At the end of the day gameplay is more important than trophies. I still say there is no excuse to exclude trophies at this stage in the game.
Actually they only have to make 3-4 2D icons. Look at Uncharted and SSHD. All the bronze trophies are identical, and the same with the silver and gold.
They found time to implement Achievements. There is no excuse for not implementing trophies. Regardless of whether Sony is making it mandatory or not, there is no excuse for implementing the system on one side and not the other for any games that have yet to be released.
Honestly there is no excuse for any game releasing this holiday season to not have trophy support.

Live your own life and stop telling people how to live theirs. Waste of life? How exactly? What should we be doing with that time? Fishing? We who enjoy trophies can play our games however we choose, and before you argue it, I guarantee that I am more a PS3 fan than you.
I would have all of them already. I have 61 treasures and 1000 medal points. I have no problem doing it all over again though.
Because they don't want people downloading game saves to get the trophies, thereby making trophies absolutely meaningless.
That is 48 trophies. They stated that there would be 48 trophies. Remember that some of those medal points are listed as hidden until you do them.
Because the greater the install base is on a console, the greater the chance that said console will be more supported by 3rd party developers.
I am as much a PS3 loyalist as anyone but making fun of Gabe's weight is really unnecessary. It has nothing to do with his business decisions and it is just immature. It is very clear that he doesn't like the Cell architecture and doesn't want to learn it, but seriously leave the man's weight out of it.
Edit: It is a shame though. I really enjoyed Portal and would have gladly paid for an expansion. I hope they don't take the same stance with Episode 3.

Without actually clicking disagree I feel I must give a dissenting opinion. I have worked for assholes in the past and I am getting a whole lot more done now that I have a boss I respect.
