Im sure once they get the install size sorted, it will play just fine on the PS3 version, its only texture pop in that is the difference. At the moment they are still in discusison with Sony as to how big that install will be, knowing Carmakc, he would probably like all the textures on the HDD.
If Sony limit him to a small size there maybe trouble with texture pop in. In which case, people will blame Id, but shoudl blame Sony.

They have been using compresison for ever, it has nothign to do with it. dds are compressed, jpg are compressed, even normal code usualy goes thorugh some sort lharc compression. Its faster to load in in and decompress on the fly that to read decompressed data off a disc. So no this not what this is.
My guess would be firmware flash for every single type of known DVD drive they have. Its all about rotation speed sand stepper motors I guess.
Down side surely would be slower load times though.
