To be honest, the developers need to think outside the box. As Valve have done with Half-Life and Left 4 Dead, just make a character. Give them a personality, then decide their skin tone.

To be honest, this is what was wrong with FFXIII. The story was weak and the character's were flat, which in turn bore the player. I played through it solely because of the battle system (which was a fun battle system, not the best, but not as bad as the world made it).

The correct portrayal of a Black character is just to make them like any other person. I loved Alex and her father in Half-Life. They were just scientist who were trying to free civilization. Once we get pass the idea of skin color, then we can truly make stories with characters that are just human, nothing more, nothing less.
