it was a brilliant business decision to make people buy or rent more games. We got trophies out of it too. It forms part of an ecosystem and makes everything feel connected. You can't really complain about that since it's not detrimental to the pleasure you derive from playing games. Basic psychology making use of the concept of immediate gratification even though the reward is virtual.
