The Japanese gaming industry does not need copy the americans, they need to re-invent themselves in order to be fresh and innovative.
You look back at the mid-90's when the PS1, N64 and Saturn were released and all the gaming world were waiting month after month for the next big title to come out of japan. Japan at that time gave us:
Tekken,
Ridge Racer,
Final Fantasy,
Silent Hill,
Resident Evil,
Metal Gear, ...
The PS2 was a success because it integrated a cheap dvd player into the console and invited a non-game related market into the industry.
People were buying PS2's that had no clue about games. They plonked their consoles in their living rooms and watched, a still relatively new technology unfold, DVD videos. A decade ago that normally would be unimaginable. A gaming console in the living room not in the bedroom.

if the ps3 version is only on par that means that its a port version or not developed from the ground up.
If that's the case then Capcom should (highly unlikely) make the ps3 version cheaper because they are not developing a pure ps3 game.

The PS2 had a cheap dvd player integrated that is why it was selling at the start.
Without the DVD player i doubt it would have sold that much.
No matter how much of a sales increase the PS3 has, it still cannot catch up to the Xbox 360.

People go on about how the wii just dumb-down gaming and made it more popular to the masses, I agree. But dont talk like its never been done before.
Look at the PS2, it had one of the lowest console specifications in that generation. So sony integrated a DVD player into the console to balance it out. It was the first to do it and attracted people into buying the console that hadn't played games before. PS2 and a Standalone DVD player cost almost the same at that time.

That PC rig probably cost about $2000+ and a copy of the game $30
The Xbox 360 cost about $300+ and a copy of the game $50
What % difference were there between them, about 20-30% better on the PC
so 30% better graphics, same gameplay for an extra $1600, no thank you.

Im afraid to say that judging by the gameplay videos, the RE series is suffering the 'SOUL CALIBUR EFFECT' i.e. New iterations, Not much change.

The DS Lite is still selling well over there, so they wont put a new product in until the sales slow down, just like in japan.
THE Gamecube might have been the cheapest but still nintendo made profit.

Sony first stated the PS3 is a media hub, then it stated its a games console, then it stated its a better pc, then etc, etc
First sony said the PS3 SKU1 = Does eveything
Then it said the PS3 SKU2 = Small HDD, No PS2,
Now it says the PS3 SKU3 = No PS2, No Pc connections,
PS3 SKU4 = ???? Does sony know what the PS3 is anymore.
Sony need to stop thinking that M$ is its only competitor in the market and start targeting the Casual Market. Look what happened to M$. They started by saying Wii is not a competitor and will not copy them, but like all businesses that suffer they go back on their word and copy(benchmark) their successfully rival (Casual Ads, Casual Games).
Sony need to do the same thing and do what they eventually do and copy their competitors.
First Sony thought that '360' was its only competitor because the '360' was the only console it could catch.
Now that sales of both '360' and 'Wii' are leaving PS3 marooned in last place. The bosses of SCEJ, because of their isolation, cannot see their competitors in the distance and so are saying they have won.
