Did anyone actually read the article? When ND said it's not a zombie game, they meant that the zombies isn't the focus. They also mention a love story, but it's not a romantic love story, more of a father daughter representation. Basically whatever Dead Island was promising with that awesome trailer (and ultimately didn't deliver as far as the trailer went) is what ND is going to try to represent in their game.
