Definitely ain't Halo 2. It's kind of unreal how kind time has been to that game...
Sony's *usually* good with providing notice way ahead of time for stuff like this. Still, I'm always surprised to fire up Mercenary and find people in surplus.
I'd say seven to 10 would be more believable. Two to three feels way too soon. Next gen has physical media and even if official support would end, you have your Limited Run type companies out there who'll continue to support physical in some sense.
They were only optional in the original due to time constraints. Originally the team wanted to do much more with them but had to leave a lot on the cutting room floor.
There might be something to this; putting it on the platform where there wasn't as much competition--and a platform that needed exclusive experiences--might've been beneficial.
To be honest, I think that we can have both in some instances, but there is a different style of acting and performance that I don't think always translates well.

Set wrong expectations? Sure, I guess? If you said this would show "new things" or "exciting things," yeah, sure. It was quite clearly implied that there would be gameplay footage, presumably (if not directly) of this regurgitated sequel for this zombie franchise, and they didn't do that....soooo maybe not "wrong expectations" and just, oh I dunno, kinda lying?
This should include the full depth of his bold and insightful articulation of the ways in which this hardware enlivens the experience, that it "[removes] some of that friction from the immersion, [to] create a game that's much more immersive."
I was stunned.
