R&C on the PS3 runs at 720p - exactly 1280x720 pixel framebuffer.
Trying to use the standard overscan region that almost every game confines their active drawing area from to to claim a game is running at a lower rez is just pathetic.
1080p is 2,073,600 pixels 720p is 921,600 pixels 640p is 655,360 pixels
That means that Capcom had to downgrade the resolution 40 percent to get the game to run on the wimpy 360 graphics hardware. And even then the game doesn't look any better than God of War 2 on the PS2 other than the slightly higher rez and blurs.
Capcom is really digging their own grave this gen.

The only reason vgchartz.com is only undertracking the PS3 by roughly 500k is because the is as much as they can get away with. It use to be much, much worse. Last year they had the 360 numbers some two million high and the PS3 significantly lower than even low estimates for worldwide sales.

I was referring to the newness of the technology, not the adoption of the format. The first DVD player shipped around 1997 and the PS2 was released in 2000. DVD had three years of cost reductions to go through before Sony included it in the PS2.
Microsoft isn't really relevant to Sony this gen any more than they were last gen. The same mostly US Halo/PC gamer demographic who bought the first Xbox are buying the new Xbox.
Sony is competing against three things this gen:
1) Manufacturing costs
2) HDTV adoption
3) Some PS2 owners taking a brief detour into Wii land before they upgrade to an HDTV and a PS3

Rockstar was struggling with the gimped 360 7GB disc format that is 1.5GB smaller than last gen's PS2 and Xbox DVDs. They begged Microsoft to let them require a harddrive like the PC and PS3 have standard and Microsoft refused. When that happened Rockstar ended up having to delay the game six months to do knows who knows what to gimp the game eve...
Square has said they are targeting a simultaneous worldwide release but even if the US version slips into early 2009 a demo will be more than enough to go along with the insane 2008 PS3 release schedule.
