That table is pretty shocking. I used to see similar things between the PS3 and 360 prices showing that "oh yea, well with the 360 addons you're paying basically as much as the PS3 out of the box" and now it's "damn man, look how much more expensive the 360 comes out to in the end!"
FIFA sold 7 million more copies than Dead Space and Mirror's Edge? That's insane. I mean, neither have well known names but...
...one is a game where you shoot undead alien monster babies in space...in ZERO GRAVITY
...and the other is one where you run up walls, across rooftops, and eventually slide kick dudes in the nads...
and people aren't willing to buy them?
I wish those guys luck and I hope they were the really good members from the Freedom Force and Tribes teams. I really liked those games. I also read the preview for the game and it sounds pretty interesting if they can pull it off.
Buying content that's pre-loaded on the disc = fail.
Good article
Getting back to the main argument, I think I've slowly slumped into casual gaming. I mean, the only games that I play on a nearly daily basis are Madden and... uh, Tetris. I'm really involved in my college campus, and there just isn't too much time to play video games.
But then again, that's why I'm such a huge supporter of portable gaming. It's gaming-on-the-go.
I just wish the Wii had less crap. People gave Nintendo flack because of their lack of third party su...
Some things would point to otherwise. If I'm not mistaken, in the holiday season last year, Call of Duty 4 was the number #1 game. GTA, COD, and WoW beat out Madden - one of big "mainstream games." Sure they all got waxed by Wii Play, but there are just too many Wii owners for it to be a fair competition..
We're witnessing history in the making. First Barack, now this. lol.
That isn't being argued here though. What's being argued is a loss of originality, not whether games qualify as art. I don't think there's a loss of originality though. In fact, I'm flat out shocked by the gutsy moves by EA with the releases of Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, etc.
The very notion that the PS3 is dying is kind of dumb by pure common sense. Sony as a company has a lot of good things going for it. The PS3 is still competitive and sales have almost been even with the 360 as the article points out. Blu-ray is going to cause them to bank, and if they can get people to believe their HDTV's go perfectly with Blu-ray because they're both Sony tech's, then that could help their overall company health.
They'll be fine.
That brings back memories. Man, I haven't been given a gaming-related Christmas gift since the release of the original Metroid Prime on the GameCube.
I'm worried about what's coming up for the gaming industry. With the economy in all kinds of hurt, publishers are going to take even less risks with their original, creative games. So I doubt we'll be able to see really cool new stuff from Pumpkin Beach. Kind of a cool name though
I'm so tired of the NXE/Home debate. NXE is not better than Home and Home isn't better than NXE. They're equally superfluous BS with the avatars and Home characters. Who gives a damn? Just get me into the game, get me to the store to download the demo, etc. They're both glorified menu systems and they're so different from one another that I don't even understand the debate.
In regards to this article, I typically agree that Sony's "doom" is way overblown but this was al...
I'm pretty shocked that Free Radical fell so abruptly. Their games weren't perfect but I don't think they were "bad." I think they had a lot of potential, but I'm sure their talent will end up at other studios anyway.
That Redneck game looks really offensive...but hilarious.
That Ski and shoot thing is so stupid. I remember I saw that on TV once. They just ski down, shoot at a shooting range, then ski more. It makes no sense. It's so random.
I actually had a professor who thought games were a waste of time and money. He basically lumped it with rap music, saying it was all about money and hoes. He said games were all about mindless killing and blood.
He was a big fan of orchestral music though. I actually played THAT same FF7 song - the sephiroth one - for him and he was like "That was beautiful and frightening."
I told him it was from Final Fantasy VII. He bought a PS2 a couple of weeks later...
Why do you think gas is so cheap these days though? People can't afford all that much so if oil companies continue to charge ridiculous prices they'll see people cut back more than they already have. They'd rather get 200 gallons out of you at $2.50 than 75 gallons at $4.00.
I really don't think GTA IV left their roots all that much. It seemed they were so preoccupied with the graphics and story that they lost sight of more minigames in exchange for stand up comedy and TV shows that get old real fast because they don't change. They're not dynamic in the way that random gameplay is.
I think turning The Warriors into a game is much more straightforward than A Clockwork Orange.
As much as I love Clockwork Orange, I don't think it'll work as a game.
I'm wondering why Killer Clowns from Outer Space isn't on the list... :-P
Personally, I'm a big fan of straight JRPGs. I'm not such a big fan of the Western style so I'm kind of concerned by this. I think they would never fully ignore Japanese tastes, obviously, but the thought of less JRPGs makes me sad.
I like how he talks about the spinning ball thing. Stupid EA.
