Platform Loyalty: Is It A Bad Thing?

Lately I’ve been thinking about the loyalty that is expressed by gamers towards their platform of choice. The question I had to ask myself was, ‘why are we as gamers so passionately driven to support a particular platform?’

While there are casual gamers who don’t necessarily defend a particular platforms integrity, more and more casual gamers are being converted into platform loyalist, rapidly joining the ranks of the ‘My console is better than yours’ faithful.

As gamers we are always looking for the biggest and brightest titles that will hopefully satisfy our unyielding appetite for great experiences. These experiences create what I believe is an emotional connection with the game and if that particular game is exclusive to a particular platform then the connection with that platform is inevitably created. However,  there has to be more to this than a game being exclusive.

At the beginning of this current platform race between the three mighty titans, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, many people had their prediction of who would dominate, who would have the most powerful system, who would have the better games and who would have the better online offerings. When looking at these factors it is clear that these concerns speak to different consumer needs.

In 2005 Microsoft launched their Xbox 360 while Sony launched the PS3 and Nintendo launched the Wii both in 2006.

All three systems offer a unique experience, and while some experiences are more unique than others, most users of each respective  system are more than happy with their experiences.

So, with all these great gaming machines available, why are people so prone to ride with just one? Well for starters these console are not cheap (The Wii due to an amazing price point from start is exempt from the too expensive argument). Today we are seeing price drops, tons of content and updates, however when this generation of consoles began this was not the case.  Regardless of the price point of each console there are many factors that lend a hand in the platform popularity contest.

From exclusive gaming content and controller preferences to platform features and platform reliability, users will always choose their favorite platform. Is this a bad thing? Absolutely not! This will never change. If one buys a Toyota over a Honda they are not considered a fanboy, so why should gamers? Well, by definition a fanboy is regularly tagged as a gamer who is overtly bias in their pursuit to build up that which they are in favor of in a extremely passionate and oftentimes annoying fashion. This is definitely not a good thing.

When gamers negatively bash another system out of sport this is when platform loyalties get unfortunately ridiculous and out of hand. As gamers we need to be careful of this. There is a distinct difference between defending your favorite console and bashing the competition.

Moving forward, the obvious reality will more than likely mirror today’s platform loyalties. Gamers of the future will  have their platform favorites. Again, remember this is not a bad thing. In fact these platform loyalties promote and stretch the innovative efforts of our three major gaming manufacturers.

There is a great saying that goes “iron sharpens iron” and as gamers we are ultimately the benefactors.

Nice read. Yes there is nothing wrong with having a preference on a console. In fact everyone has one :)

Those who feel they are better people for having their console and people are evil if they like something else is when things get weird lol

I agree. It is totally based on preference. You want to watch blu ray movies and get free online but still play playstation exclusives get a PS3. If you have no need for blu ray and are looking for a good way to spend your money and still get games in HD and are into MS exclusives and xbox live then get a 360. If you're into mario and the innovation of the wii and still have access to old nintendo classics get the wii.

Every console has their own strengths, if they were all combined we wouldn't have any competition which would develop laziness in video games. My console of choice is the PS3 for the reasons mentioned above but that does not mean that the 360 or the wii are inferior it just means ps3 is my console of choice and that's about it. If i could afford all 3 and still get all the games i want then i'd be more than happy but that is becoming less and less practical in today's economy.

Thanks for the comments. As a dedicated Playstation site administrator with ps3thevolution.com I report a lot of gaming info and oftentimes I speak with gamers who oftentimes have a difficult time letting their gaming peers appreciate their console of choice. Odisho68 you are absolutely right, every console has their strengths and definitely their weaknesses. Healthy debating over consoles or software is cool as long as ones preference and opinion can be respected.

I'm getting tired of N4G,the goddamn News Admin is a racist that keeps on deleting every single Hiphopgamershow.com article.

Just wait, all that hate he/she has for black people will hurt this site rather than help it.

Cat5966d ago

Oh, you mean like the submission you just accused me of deleting that's still alive and well b/c you just didn't realize that N4G automatically moves stories more than 24 hrs old off the mainpage?

Stay on topic and don't accuse me of utter BS.

John Titor, you attack one of us mods/admins, you attack all of us!

She's not a racist. Catastrophe is one of the few admins here with any integrity. She does her job. Stop playing the race card. If you have nothing, don't b!tch.

I'm sorry but did I miss something?

/shrug. who knows

On Topic: Nice read though. however I feel that the rule of the intervebs will always hold true in that.

Normal person + Anonymity + Audience = Total douche

This rule will always prevail. you can see comments on here(N4G) that are just plain blind or fabricated all the time due to this simple rule and it wont change. Not just because it's a console war but because thats the nature of people on any site be it about World of Warcraft or whose shoes looked best at the Oscars. Who has what right to have kids or why the military is needed or not... We just like games and find these people(I am not immune btw. I have a preference and think the other side are a bunch of lying tools) because it's what we search. Granted gamers seem to get more heated then perhaps fashion freaks but this site is still a ton better then other. Go check G4 or Gametrailers for some serious bashing. Thats why I stay here because those sites are 100X worse imo.

A good example is when someone tries to compare PS3/360 burnout or Call of duty or Bioshock I just say "PC looks best and is cheapest to play" All I get is disagrees for stating fact... Technically it does look best no doubt. Games are cheaper on PC as well... Fanboys hate that for some reason and never explain the disagree's... It's just that rule.

Eh. Fanboys treat consoles as if its their favorite sports team.

Review - PaperKlay (PC) | WayTooManyGames

WTMG's Leo Faria: "Even with these handful of issues, PaperKlay is still an easy recommendation, with a few asterisks. If you are looking for something very akin to old-school 3D collectathons, you’re going to be a bit disappointed. It’s a bit more linear, vastly less challenging. Now, as an introduction to the genre, a very accessible game to convince casuals to play something a bit more traditional, this works oh so well. At the end of the day, it’s a very competent and easygoing 3D platormer with a lot of charm and heart."
