Can the PS5 Outsell the PS4?

Now that there is stock, yes. Sony expects absurd numbers this fiscal year, we see how PS5 has trended since fall 2022. It's def possible. PSVR2 should add a very minor boost and the Pro will help but games like Ragnarok, FFXVI, and Spiderman consistently releasing is why PS continues to succeed. The hardware is a win as well. Everyone expected the PS5 to be weak by comparison to SX based solely on teraflop hype and it has held its own. The Dualsense was called a gimmick by some and has been a small revelation. Perhaps the ssd was overstated but in totality both hardware and software have been great.

Honestly, if stock was never an issue PS5 would've obliterated PS4 by this point in terms of units. So yes, it's possible. There is certainly an appetite for the console and games.

I think ur last point is the most important if stock wasn't an issue, ps5 would literally be miles and miles ahead, the slow start is gonna impact ps5.

Then it also depends on the lifespan and when Sony decide to drop ps6 so there a few factors at play but the shortages have definitely hampered Sony massivlely

Who knows? There's still many that refuse to get the ps5 and keep the ps4 as there's...not much reason to upgrade unless you're doing fine financially atm. Ff16 and spiderman 2 (if that'll even stay ps5 exclusive) will help a good amount. We still don't know much beyond that asides from all the live service games that are also coming to PC day one.

I think he's talking about people not bothering with PS5 due to supply issues and damn near everything is on PS4, which they're fine with. I work with someone like that. I offered him my order that I could have gotten through Sony, but he like, "nah. I'll wait."

I couldn't get one at first, so was a little late to the party, but i wasn't too concerned as long as I got one before PSVR2 launched. Everyone has their own reasons for wanting one. Much of the cost can be offset by selling your old console(s) and games anyway, so I only spent less than a couple of hundred.

No reason to upgrade? Play Miles or Forbidden West on PS4 and compare it to PS5. Miles on my TV/PS5 essentially run 4K/45-60 with VRR enabled plus max vfx/RT reflections with stupid load times, 3D audio, and haptics. Though, audio/haptics aren't the best implementation on Miles.

HFW currently looks superb at 60 with dynamic "4k" and features iimproved water, foliage, and lighting plus great 3D audio, haptics, adaptive triggers, and fast loads. HFW is a shell of that on PS4. It goes beyond resolution bud. PS5, particularly with first party offers more reason to upgrade than ANY console.

Its definitely possible based on the breakdown that Sony gave earlier showing that nearly a third of users were actually new to PlayStation. It was outselling the PS4 until the pandemic as well. The next indication of whether it will outsell the PS4 will come next year around this time. Sony is expecting to pass PS4 aligned sales before the end of next fiscal 3/31/24. If it does that then its safe to assume that it will probably pass the PS4.

it had a slower start for the first two years due to stock shortages, if they release a slim version priced reasonably i dont see why not, BUT compelling software needs to be ramped up and exclusive titles should really start shining 3 years in

I definitely think that it can. However, there's going to be a quite a few individuals who will not be getting a PS5 or will be switching over to Xbox series. I was just talking to a few friends about which console to get and when they found out that starfield which they expected to be on Playstation was no longer on Playstation instead of getting a PS5 they went for an Xbox. How much more I wonder will people move over to Xbox when they find out call of duty belongs to Xbox. And this was just in my circle of a few friends that are barely even gamers. They play very casually. And we all know the majority.

So I think it'll be harder pressed to outsell the PS4 since a lot of very popular IP have now been removed. Doom, wolfenstein, Dishonored, hellblade, elder scrolls, fallout, starfield, etc.
All of these IP used to be third-party multiplatform titles. Not anymore. And we have a vocal group super happy about that. I don't think Xbox gamers realize how much of a blow he's any max and if it goes through the activblizz deals have been. They've totally hit the bottom line and I expect Sony will respond in a similar fashion.

I think it'll be like any other gen for playstation sales wise, over 100m, under 130m.
It's not hard to fathom but I think it'll be close between the 2.
Either way we'll remember them both as great consoles, just like ps1,2 and 3.

PS4 sold so well because Sony's competitors both nearly committed suicide with their pathetic offerings. I say this as a person who liked the Wii U, but it wasn't what people wanted in 2012. And only idiots wanted constant check-in DRM from Microsoft.

PS4 gained momentum so incredibly fast, it became the de-facto console to own from 2013 - 2020.

I believe PS5 will sell well, but it's facing stronger competition now, the Switch is a sales monster and if Nintendo makes a Switch 2 then it's safe to assume it will be a sales monster as well.
