SPOnG: "Some bad news for SEGA fans everywhere - SPOnG has heard word that Bayonetta 2 has been cancelled, following the publisher's ongoing restructure."
I think Platinum Games as a whole sucks for the same reason. All or most of their games seem to be that way and now they're ruining the good name of Metal Gear with Rising: Revengence.
I'd rather see Sega make a current/next generation Streets of Rage.
I'm thinking along the lines of a Grand Theft Auto type game, except you're the cops busting up crimes and criminals instead of the one committing them. Police chases, raids, etc. No investigations like LA Noire, just catching/busting people and kicking the crap out of them on your way to finding the crime boss.
I also don't like the exagerated tone in their games, but this means it's not for me, overall, it wasn't a bad game.
If SEGA has to reestructure and cut some fat, it's ok, but I'd say there's many games that should be cancelled/not given another chance before Bayonetta...
From the top of my head, I remember something like 6 good games from Sega this whole gen, 3 of which are from Platinum Games (Mad World, Vanquish and Bayonetta), the others would be Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza and one good Sonic game lately... There were also some Wii games that sold well like Nights and Sonic & Mario at the olympics.
Now let's take a look at the bad: they almost butchered the Hedgehog, they ruined Golden Axe, they made several crappy movie tie-ins... But the worst part is that they don't have enough confidence on their franchises, even Sonic 4 is an episodic DLC-esque game, no House of the Dead was made a big budget game, Sega Rally never expanded beyond a coin-in game, everything is scaled to be a downloadable title. They're surviving from that and old games sold online (so I say don't even dream about that open world Streets of Rage), they can't manage big projects anymore.
I don't think Bayonetta (or Platinum) should pay the price for SEGA not being able to compete with big publishers. I just hope Platinum get's by unharmed.
Good point on them not impressing with a current gen Golden Axe and couldn't expect much from a new Streets of Rage.
I might be describing something too similar to Hitman or Max Payne anyway. Just trying to think of a way Streets of Rage would work without just being a side scroller.
This is how you know the "source" and/or the author of the article are full of sh*t:
- Bayonetta sold 1.35 million copies in about 2 months. That's very impressive for a new IP, and those numbers usually green-light a sequel.
- Legendary developer Hideki Kamiya's return to the genre he basically invented was not an isolated event. The game garnered high praise from almost every major reviewer, achieving an impressive 90% Metascore.
- Bayonetta is Platinum Games biggest and most successful title so far, has a huge fan base, and it is considered the best hardcore action adventure to date by many gamers, including those amazingly talented players that post them crazy combo videos online.
While the overall story and anime design choices alienated some gamers, the incredible depth of gameplay in the game astonished even Kamiya's fans, who in turn deemed Bayonetta the spiritual sequel to the original Devil May Cry; causing many to wonder how that series would've turned out had Capcom not cheated Hideki out of DMC 2.
Another important note is how obvious it was that the game had a somewhat limited budget; most of the intended cutscenes had to be brought down to picture slides and some other elements were cut off due to limited resources and time constraints. However, the team poured all they had into what made the game the action masterpiece it came to be: the gameplay.
Also notice how the article says Sega did not comment on the "rumor." Think about it, why would they say something that would most likely confirm the existence of an unannounced project?
i wouldn't boast of any AAA game that sold less than 2 million, not all of those sales is at full price. the game could still have lost money if including the marketing cost and logistics...
the fact that they botched the PS3 version, which is the platform would have sold them more in Japan, did not help...
Bayonetta maybe Platinum's biggest hit, but it's not their IP. they can't make another one if SEGA doesn't want to...
not commenting on a rumor is SOP, it can be taken one way or another...
I agree. I loved Bayonetta. I personally think it is the best action game of this generation. The gameplay was amazing! If for whatever reason this rumor turns out to be true I have started a petition to get Sega Corp. to publish this game. Everyone who dug this game as much as I did please sign this and hopefully Sega will listen to the fans of this amazing Franchise. http://www.change.org/petit...
yeah i played the demo and didnt see what all the fuss was about. granted though it was a demo, it could get a lot better but i found the main character uninteresting anyway. oh well, sucks for the fans though.
Yeah the game was crap. The story and the characters were so chliche and BS that I could not force myself to finish the game. It was so bad.
The game had good and functional hack and slash mechanics but that could not save the abomination some people call story and the characters. I felt embarrassed just by playing the game.
I didn't really like Bayonetta myself for a number of reasons, but I wouldn't say that it was a bad game just because I didn't like it. I've got to agree with insomnium2 about the characters though, to me they were a very unlikable and annoying bunch. That said, I feel pretty bad for gamers who were looking forward to the sequel.
you played bayonetta expecting a good story? Wait, you played a japanese hack n slash game expecting a good story? I cant think of any of them that had a good story. Anyway, story is the least important part of these games, 90% of the folks who buy these games skip any cutscene that goes on for too long.
Thats your opinion. I for one love the story in these games. I cant speak on bayonetta.. havent played it, but it didnt appeal to me.. looked stupid to me. And i can see corny before i even put it in my console... so i just skipped that one. God of war 3 story, AWESOME. devil may cry 1 story. AWESOME... the rest of the dmc games were crap in the story department, but the very game that started hack and slash dmc had a good story.
I too didn't understand all the fuss about Bayonetta. It didn't appeal to me to begin with but there was SO much hype that I had to rent it. I suppose I like to see what is going on in the screen when I fight.
I don't see why so many people are complaining about the story. I am in NO WAY saying it was good or even okay, but I an saying that you don't look for story in hack and slash games. Similar to fighting games, they're all about the mechanics and how well it plays. In this area Bayonetta is fantastic, which is why it got so much praise.
i honestly just couldn't stand the game all around. the original DMC's were much better games imo. Platnium games is one of the most overrated studio s this gen. i mean sure they do stuff thats innovative but at the same time they lack how to just make a good game frankly.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this game was a waste of time. Well at least for me. I won't say it was a bad game either, just... Not for me.
well then, this absolutely ruins a lot of people's day, rumor or not...
Does Sega own the IP?
This has to be a rumor.
