Rumor: Metroid Wii U To Run On Unreal Engine 3

I don't know about you, but I'm approaching Nintendo's Wii U with cautious pessimism optimism. We know that the console's core first party titles will be great, but will the new hardware really be able to compete against the upcoming wave of next-gen systems? Probably not, but if they've got Retro Studios making an HD title set in the Metroid universe that looks anything like the Mass Effect 2/Unreal Tournament III mod pictured above, I'm sold.

To be fair, Team Ninja was just following Sakamoto's direction on Other M. He wrote, produced AND directed that game.

As long he stays the fuck out of Metroid development for a while, I'm happy.

Yeah he was. He's been helping with the franchise since day one, but I'm not sure if he handled any of them with as much control as he had on Other M. Team Ninja was basically following his direction.

Perhaps I jumped the gun. I think he can help supervise games (like he did in the Prime trilogy) but I hope he has absolutely no more say in the plots for the games.

Sakamoto started on Super Metroid.

However Other M, was the first time he was Director, Producer and Writer.

He cannot be trusted with full control, so I say get him on a leash and see how he does, and never let him write the games again.

It would be nice, but I'd rather see Retro do something else. I love Retro's Metroid games, but I want to see what they could do with another franchise or their own original IP.

WiiU may not be capable of fulling utilizing UE4 just yet. Likely engine still needs optimization for WiiU version. Although its possible its under NDA so saying Unreal Engine 3 is okay until UE4 is released.

Third person camera that is similar to batman : arkham city. That game pretty much perfected what metroid was trying to do.

I don't know about you guys. I go way back when Metroid used to be in 2d and that was fun. I always wanted to envision how the game would play like in 3d with all the things Samus can do in third person view. While Prime does look like a solid game, I always felt that it lacked some of what made the series great previously. In a way, I never got into Prime.

Well said. Prime was great, but lacked a small something. I remember once envisioning the opening of a first-person Metroid game, and then they announced Prime. Bit of a shocker really.

I think Unreal 4 would be better, but 3 is a good start. CryEngine would be beautiful.

Maybe they could try developing their own specific engine. They have the newest tech right now

UE3 should have died with id Tech 4 (what 3arch and Infinity Ward are calling the MW/COD Engine) and the Euphoria engine.

Devs need to stop being so damn cheap and upgrade their tools...

Most games that used UE3 were probably making use of premade shaders and what not. They didn't just get an engine. They probably got asset packs as well.

UE3 is still a powerful engine. It's just the money a developer wants to spend on making all sorts of add-ons/assets for the engine.

The only way to "upgrade" is to add components to the engine. And that is exactly what EPIC is doing to their UE3 engine. I can bet on it that the UE4 is just a superset of UE3.

"probably" used a modified unreal engine - people have poked around in the code and found hints that the engine could have been a *heavily* modified unreal 2. but even so, it's like pointing out that the call of duty games are based on the quake engine - when they're modified to the point that they don't resemble their original form, it's more like the developers pinched the little bits of code they needed as a foundation and rebuilt from there.

that's all a bit different then nintendo actually licensing unreal 3. could happen though, i just dont think it's likely.

i really really doubt Nintendo would use a 3rd party engine on such a major 1st party game, but if it looks good, and it plays good, i honestly couldnt care less what they use.

Maybe. But on the other hand, Nintendo has never developed HD games before. So, it might help them get a jump start in HD development.

well that is technically true, and seeing the direction Nintendo took this gen can sometimes makes us think they could have "problems" going now to HD, but on the other hand, they already proved themselves by making a huge jump from SNES to N64, and N64 to GCN. So i have no doubt they will come into the HD with a bang

No i would rather him use his talents on a Geist or Eternal Darkness game for Wii U. I think he could do some amazing things with either one of those franchises, to bring them to a more popular status.

I can't wait to see what retro studios come out with next. Even if they are using UE3 just seeing it in HD will be awesome.
