Controversial Ninja Gaiden 3 Review by IGN, Not Justified?

Techtorial: IGN has made a buzz lately for reviewing Ninja Gaiden 3 and giving a low score of 3 out of 10 and calling it “one of the worst games of the series”. Is it justifiable? See details

Reviews should be treated as opinions. Example: I hate cherry vanilla ice cream ( true story ) but other people like it. See how that works?

N311V4420d ago

Yes, which is why when I'm deciding whether to buy a game I'll read several reviews spanning the range of scores. In other words I'll get several critics opinions, both good and bad, then make up my own mind.

SilentNegotiator4420d ago

But reviews need to be about analysis, opinion or not. A good review should have good analysis of the fundamentals of a game.

It's great that you read several reviews. So long as you're not the sort of person that simply spits on every review they don't like and shouts "OPINIONZZZ!" without any consideration of whether or not it analyzes the game well.

snipes1014419d ago

Subjectivity will rear its head in any review. All the time. Forever. Our life experiences will always show themselves no matter how subjective we try to be.

What I think the IGN critic was doing was rating NG3 against other NG games, not against games as a whole. When stacked up against other NG games, it fell (enormously) short, at least in his opinion. Stacked up against other games in general, though and that is where you start to see decent scores.

Im not sure if that is the right route to take when reviewing a game, but Im just speculating on why he scored it as he did.

snipes1014419d ago

Well now gamesradar gave the game a 3 as well sooooo.... :\

I dont know about you guys, but Ive always trusted the people at GR a lot. They tend to line up with what I think.

coolbeans4420d ago (Edited 4420d ago )

But you're biased against cherry products. Over the course of a few years, I've collected all of your "reviews" on both products that included cherries and products that included vanilla (including vanilla extracts). Your opinion on almost anything cherry tends to score lower than the general public; therefore, I've deemed it inconceivable for your taste buds to have an honest judgment on the matter, thus rendering your opinion on everything about cherries moot.

Hypothesis: I believe that after all of these years, you're still angry about the inflated price of cherries so many years ago that you MUST hate everything about them. This insecure, swirling fit of anger has caused you to always lash out at the sight of any menu that exclusively serves cherry-filled product.

What do you have to say about the empirical evidence I've brought before you?

dark-hollow4420d ago (Edited 4420d ago )

That's why I hate scores for reviews.
A lot of people get angry at why this is acceptable here and not there but the thing is that you can't compare most games as apples to apples.

How can you average story with graphics and controls then get a number?
Some of these things are window dressing and some are fundamental.

Many people consider chess as the greatest game of all time, How would it be fair if you averaged the story?

Braid4419d ago

Absolutely, this numerical and alphabetical scoring system has got to go. The reader should draw his/her own conclusion from the review, weighing pros and cons stated by the reviewer throughout the whole article and eventually decide if the game is a buy or not. Some people don't even read the reviews and just look at the score and say "well this game must be good/bad". Almost every gamer out there looks at the score before reading the review and that creates a conditioning on our minds, making us ignore our personal tastes and preferences and rather focus on the ones of the reviewers. That's why I don't usually read reviews BEFORE playing the game anymore. I only read them to compare my view of the game with theirs afterwards.

Drekken4420d ago

What's this? You don't like cherries?? You are biased... Strawberries probably gave you a big gift basket to say that. What type of integrity do you have? You should be bagging groceries... NAY! YOU SHOULD BE BAGGING ONLY CHERRIES BOUGHT AT THE GROCERY STORE!!!!

rogimusprime4420d ago (Edited 4420d ago )

The review, and the game itself, are just one big tragedy. As a gamer, i felt they could've kept the ridiculous story lines, just kept the combat and weapons in tact, and gave me less ridiculous enemies than were found in NG2. (giant armadillo turtles, anyone?) This should've never happened. IGN can do what they want, but they should've been honest about the game's potential during the MANY hands-on opportunities they had.

You're telling me this game is half as good as Ninja Blade? NINJA BLADE!?!?!?

The world is coming to an end.

MastaMold4420d ago

I think reviews shouldn't be based on scores anymore with video games and movies the reviews can be based on Buy or Rent formula it makes it easier for people that care about reviews my opinion

A-Glorious-Dawn4420d ago

I love this part

"Several commenters actually say that they are losing trust in IGN’s ability to give out ratings and proper reviews of video games."

LOL 'actually' it happens on every review..

Megaman_nerd4420d ago (Edited 4420d ago )

why is it controversial for someone to have a different opinion than your?

ninavoljic4419d ago

the term "controversial" has nothing to do with receiving opposite opinions, rather, it's rooted with individuals who are talking about it and the amount of buzz it's getting.

undisputed4419d ago (Edited 4419d ago )

I want a subjective review. Not an opinion. This guy allowed his personal opinions get in the way of being subjective.

Ghost2504420d ago

im sorry but ninja gaiden does not deserve a 3, that means your putting it on the same level as "AMY" your not gonna sit there and tell that its as bad as "A<Y". if you do you are clown and im pretty sure everyone is gonna laugh at you like a clown.

wolokowoh4420d ago

Well Colin reviewed Amy and I think Mitch was the name of the reviewer on NG3 and reviews aren't meant for people to compare two games. They're for the reader to get an opinion on whether the game is good or bad and what it did wrong and right. Also if you read Mitch?'s review like I did the other day, you'd know why it got a 3. Maybe he was a little harsh on the game but everything he complained about was a legitimate criticism of what the game did wrong. Maybe it should got a 5 or 6, but after you under 7, its a no longer a recommendation for purchase so it doesn't really matter. Like he said its too different from other NG games and the ways it is different are all negative changes.

Ghost2504420d ago

thats understandable but from my perspective on the outside looking in, that doesn't look bad enough to get 3, 5 or 6 sounds more reasonable tbh.

Baka-akaB4420d ago

The problem isnt the difference of opinion ... but how poorly the review is done . IGN pulled the same crap and worse on multiple games such as their most recent review of dynasty warriors gundam . But of course people only suddenly notice on bigger games

The problem isnt if the game is actually good or bad ... they just spend time and waste space on rants instead of actually detailling the game

johnnyvegas4420d ago

wait, dynasty warriors gundam was a good game????

Baka-akaB4420d ago (Edited 4420d ago )

where did i ever say that ? The moron reviewing it talked more about his hatred of dynasty warriors as a whole than the actual game that's all .

I would expect a review to well talk about the game at hand you know ?

There are three short paragraphs and this is the only part about the gameplay : After your Gundam is perfect you take it into the battlefield and press Square press Square press Square press Square press Square press Square press Square press Square...

Not only is it moronic and obvious he didnt even truly play the game .

But at least leave the choice to the reader after some more detailed description ?

And that's one of the IGN many ways . They wouldnt have the chops to pull that crap on say ... Fifa and anything annually redondant , because too popular .

johnnyvegas4420d ago

"IGN pulled the same crap and worse on multiple games such as their most recent review of dynasty warriors gundam . But of course people only suddenly notice on bigger games "

So you are basically saying DW:G got a bad review too, but wasn't highly publicized as the Ninja Gaiden review.

And having played a few games of the Dynasty Warriors series back in the day and the first Dynasty Warriors Gundam, I don't really think there is a way to sum up that game for more than a few sentences.

If what you are saying about the DW:G review is true I'm glad that IGN had the balls to do that to that game. I honestly can't believe people keep buying those games. It's like the sports games of action games - yearly outings with no new gameplay.

Baka-akaB4420d ago (Edited 4420d ago )

that's not at all what i'm saying , i dont give a crap about DW Gundam . I'm saying the author isnt even writing a review there . He didnt detail crap about the game , REGARDLESS of it being good or bad . And that's a bad habit from ign , even for good games , as long as they aint high profile enough .

How the heck is that even ballsy ? No one would frickin' notice their crap

Anyway i'm guessing i'm wasting time here .

There is always more to say about any game , and you can short sum up most game with that attitude .

And here with NG3 we have yet another case of IGn not even posting a review (even if i happen to agree with their feelings on the game) , but just another pointless rant

ChrisGTR14419d ago

hey baka i get where your coming from but come on now, i bought ng2 on launch date and it was an amazing game, but NG3 ...has ONLY 1 WEAPON!!! NG2 had like 7!! were not talking about a minor thing here how do you go from 7 unique weapons all with their own combos , strenghts and weaknesses to 1 weapon for the whole damn game. then you got QTEs which i'd say are universally hated at this point. top it off with easy / repeditive combat / less gore / no limb amputating and a horrible camera. how could this game not get a 3. this game is a complete abomination, its a giant slap in the face to anyone who bought the last game. even when this games 20$ i still wont buy it.

Baka-akaB4419d ago (Edited 4419d ago )

But i agree with their negative feelings on the game actually , just not how they review it . But they've got a job to do , wich they hardly do and instead post forum and comments level rants about games , "our level" basically ..

admiralvic4419d ago

Actually this is an overarching issue that isn't limited to scores.

Take the recent RE: Mercs save problem. Prior to Merc's, Super Monkey Ball also had the same save locking. However, Mercs was an issue, but Monkey Ball wasn't. If you look into it, many people wrote off Monkey Ball because it wasn't as popular as RE or it wasn't Capcom. How can A be acceptable, but B be unacceptable if they're exactly the same? The same goes for fighting game costumes. Blazblue pallet swaps? Okay! Street Fighter costumes? F U SCAMCOM! In the end, till we expect universal standards, complaining just makes us look petty.

On topic~

People should just find reviewers they trust and follow them or at least sites that have stricter guidelines. Just because IGN is big, doesn't mean they're more creditable than a start up site... just means IGN is bigger.

What a New Ninja Gaiden Game Needs to Fix

Screen Rant Writes: Team Ninja knows fans want a new Ninja Gaiden game, but if Ryu Hayabusa is going to come back, there are some things that the series needs to fix.

- Better story, not that it has to be very deep though
- Better level design, on par or even exceed NG1
- Better enemies design, NG3's enemies design were boring and repetitive

TheRealHeisenberg1532d ago

Agreed and bring back the dodge roll. The dash was trash.

Melankolis1532d ago

Yep. I also prefer dodge roll than dash.

NapalmSanctuary1532d ago (Edited 1532d ago )

I'd say just re-add the dodge roll and have both but with different properties. As long as they made both tactically useful in their own ways, it could be really interesting.

Godmars2901532d ago

- No NG has had a good or deep story. Its best has only been about action and enemies.
- Likewise, level design was stages where you fought enemies, which said shallow story connected.
- NG3 utterly forgot that enemies where either trained and highly skilled psychotic killers, or literal demons who'd crack a baby's skull open for fun.

At this point Nioh and Shadows Die Twice have taken NG spot.

TheRealHeisenberg1532d ago

NG Black beats them both. Agree that NG3 was trash. Nioh and Shadows can occupy the spot until NG makes a triumphant return.

NapalmSanctuary1532d ago (Edited 1532d ago )

I take it you never played NG3: Razor's Edge. That game fixed the lack of difficulty. Maybe a little too well with how unfair some of the enemies and bosses were. Still not on par with the previous 2 games but miles ahead of the original NG3 release and well worth playing.

And whats this shit about story. Few action games come close to being on the same level of quality as NG 1&2 and having "good or deep story" didn't get them any closer to it. "Its best" sets it apart and far ahead of almost any other game in the genre except for DMC 3-5 and the Bayonetta series. NG 1&2, along with other games like Doom, prove how little story matters when you get the important aspect of a game (gameplay) right.

Not that Sekiro isn't a great game. The only thing that keeps it from standing shoulder to shoulder with NG 1&2 is its lack of weapon variety and its frame rate issues.

NapalmSanctuary1532d ago

I definitely prefer the Zelda-esque game progression. NG2 was still a great game though.

CorndogBurglar1532d ago

Don't give Ryu some crazy weakness that interrupts literally anything he is doing in order to do some BS animation of him wincing in pain! That garbage ruined NG3

AK911532d ago

Bring back the difficulty of the first game both 3 and Yaiba (yes I played that POS game) had laughably easy difficulty that it wasn't even funny.

Thundercat771532d ago

With games like NiOh, I don't miss ninja Gaiden at all.

NapalmSanctuary1532d ago

Completely different sub-genres, dude.

CorndogBurglar1532d ago

Nioh was totally different than Ninja Gaiden...

Hungryalpaca1531d ago

Might as well say “wish games like Forza I don’t miss Mario kart”

Asuka1532d ago

Bring back the difficulty.

NapalmSanctuary1532d ago

I want a Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden 2 remaster for all consoles/PC. Complete with peak difficulties intact and maybe some new weapons and outfits. The problem with the Sigma series was that 1) they removed most of the puzzle elements 2) they nerfed the difficulty and 3) they seriously reduced the number of enemies on screen at a time in many places.

They need to make a true sequel to Ninja Gaiden 2, that was the most satisfying combat I've experienced in a hack n slash game.

micdagoat191585d ago

been playing 1&2 on and off since they were released. I usually will play until I get frustrated then take another year off lol. Nver tried 3 or the 4th one even though they are in my backlog.

I tried to go back to Sigma but good god those controls are just insufferable. Couldn't do it.

Fatality: Games That Killed Their Franchises (Or At Least Put Them On A Long Hiatus)

Phil writes, "Sometimes all it takes is one game to make a long-running or promising franchise become dead in the water, maligned to irrelevancy and just a memory in the annals of gaming history. It's a dog-eat-dog industry where it doesn't matter if the franchise has been around for ages or for milliseconds--just one or two failures and you're done. That's the case with these franchises, all of which I'm sad to see are currently nowhere to be found. Whether any of these will return for a kick-ass comeback or not is up in the air, but what is known is that for many, these franchises met truly unfortunate ends."

For Tony Hawk's Pro Skater really the first 3 were really the only good ones. After that they sort of went downhill.

Skull5212120d ago

Biggest shame I think is SOCOM. Easily Sony’s best franchise by a long shot and they just let it die.

BlackIceJoe2119d ago

I was going to say SOCOM too. That was one of the best strategy games on the market and then Sony turned it Into a normal shooter.

Dabigsiebowski2118d ago

I thought Underground was pretty good

Segata2120d ago

Klonoa was great but released at a bad time on just 1 system with no marketing. Razors Edge fixed many issues with NG3 vanilla and is a guilty pleasure. Another one that killed a franchise is Lost Planet 3. The better game was Japan only in EX Troopers on PS3. I also would say Marvel vs Capcom Infinite killed the series. I know it's less than a year old but the writing is on the wall. Silent Hill series as soon as Konami gave it to western devs and also made mobile spinoffs.

CorndogBurglar2119d ago (Edited 2119d ago )

With all the licensing effort it takes to make an MvC game you are probably right.

Which sucks because people love MvC. Bad decisions were made with the last one, that's all. But I guarantee if they made a new MvC and put a good roster in with 3 man teams and no easy mode combos then people would go right back to it.

Unfortunately, most companies won't be willing to make another sequel as soon as the latest title flops. Even though MvC Infinite wouldn't have flopped if they had just made different decisions.

81BX2120d ago

Nice try buddy. Then why have they made 1,000,000,000,000,000. Games? Cod has never gotten it wrong...over and over and over.

FPS_D3TH2119d ago

Never gotten it wrong? I guess in terms of how to get kids to steal money out of parents wallets. It’s done plenty wrong lol

81BX2119d ago

Lol. Little money grabbers! I remember when paying for map packs was a big deal. Now we have to pay for everything. This is crazy

REDGUM2119d ago

It's all well and good saying COD sells well, which I don't deny, but that doesn't make it a good game. It merely means people want more of the same, game play, as you put it, over and over and over!

If it's so good, why are more people playing Battlefield 4 over the more current COD releases!

People impulse buy i recon, pre order a game before it's been shown to the public then just stick with it when it releases hoping for change!

I Find COD games much of the same with every release which is why I'd call id a dying franchise.
These kids will grow up soon and realise there's more out there than just corridor shooting games.

It's just an opinion afterall.

DialgaMarine2120d ago (Edited 2120d ago )

When has CoD died or gone on hiatus though? You may not like them, but tens of millions of people do, and buy it every year. People seriously need to shut up and leave that franchise alone. It’s not hurting anyone, and the whining is seriously getting old.

T2X2120d ago

I know right? Those games are always fun. At least IMO. The fun varies a bit depending on the location and theme, but overall, always pretty damn good.

81BX2119d ago (Edited 2119d ago )

Youre 100% wrong. They need to be called out just like every other company. That's why they returned to boots on ground. You let them treat you however they like... some of us chose to be treated how we like

DialgaMarine2119d ago

You say that as if I’m an avid CoD player. I don’t mind the series, but it’s definitely not my favorite. The bitching, however, was old back in 2010. 99% of people that do it only do so because they see others doing it. You don’t like CoD? Play something else. It’s not supposed to cater to fans of other franchises.

MWH2120d ago

I love Klonoa, there's always hope for a new game.

Pickledpepper2120d ago

I loved the dead space 1+2 hated 3. Played through them so many times but found number 3 such a bore to get through, really hope they pick this back up.

PowerOfTheCloud2120d ago (Edited 2120d ago )

Dead space 1 is imo unrivaled when it comes to horror games and part 2 was already kind of a let down by still good. I didn't even play part 3 because i didn't like the direction that game went.

Wish they will reboot dead space one day .

Pickledpepper2120d ago

I totally agree with you on that, dead space 1 was the pinnacle of survival horror and dead space 2 was still a great game, I have all achievements for 1 and 2 and both games still hold up well against modern games, 3 was a complete let down I did finish it just for satisfaction but had no fun from the game at all, found it very boring to say the least.

CorndogBurglar2119d ago

For me, the only reason Dead Space 2 wasn't as good as the original is because it wasn't new anymore. But when you think about it, DS2 was still just as good of a horror game. DS1 was so good because everything you came across was new and terrifying.

I remember the feeling the first time I played DS1. No other game, before or since, has given me that feeling that something is going to jump out and attack with every footstep you took. Talk about great atmosphere and tension!

REDGUM2119d ago

and the Resistance games franchise!

Fist4achin2120d ago

Agreed, plus I didn't care for what they did to the weapons crafting system.
