Blame the decline of the JRPG genre on the merger between Squaresoft and Enix. Its killed the competition between them, resulting in poor quality games.

When the benchmark of the franchise turns rubbish, it really hurts the genre

Oh..it's YOU...

There's plenty of competition in the JRPG genre this gen. Tales of games are probably the most popular. Others I can think of are White Knight Chronicles and Valkyra Chronicles..

Anyway Squaresoft and Enix merged in 2003....it's only recently that Final Fantasy games have been sub-par.(to some people). The merger can't be the problem here, it's something else like the rise of the Western RPGs like Mass Effect and Elder Scrolls.
