DoomRL becomes DRL after a legal warning by ZeniMax Media

It appears as if things have turned out just fine for DoomRL, Jupiter Hell and Kornel Kisielewicz, because DoomRL has just become "DRL". So everything is cool now, no more trademark problems =) (DoomRL has also gone open source).

Simon_the_sorcerer3117d ago

Will that be enough to save the game in the long run though?

Littil_Devil3117d ago

DRL? Well, it´s open source now...But I´m more worried about the fact that the owners of Drone Racing League will give them a hard time (their logo = DRL).

TGG_overlord3117d ago

That´s what I thought as well :S So perhaps that´s something that could cause the DoomRL developers a lot of problems in the future...

Simon_the_sorcerer3117d ago

Yep, DRL is open source now (you can download it right now if you want to). Well, maybe they will, maybe not? But there´s always a risk of that.

TGG_overlord3117d ago

My thoughts exactly...Because I have a feeling that ZeniMax Media won´t let them off their hook that easy.

Simon_the_sorcerer3117d ago

Time will tell, but Jupiter Hell is safe right?

Littil_Devil3117d ago

I wonder how long it will take before Drone Racing League gets on their case...

TGG_overlord3117d ago

Hard to tell, could be weeks, could be months...

Simon_the_sorcerer3117d ago

Sometime next year, would be my guess. Because Drone Racing League is taking off big time now.

Simon_the_sorcerer3117d ago

Could be today, could be tomorrow. I´m just surprised that they haven´t done anything yet.

TGG_overlord3117d ago

All it takes really is that someone tells them about DRL´s existence.

Zenimax Media told the author of DoomRL to take the game´s homepage down?

Today has been a very mixed day of emotions for me (Robin Ek, TGG), because I just found out that it seems like Zenimax Media wants to close down the "DoomRL" site. So this is my take on that matter.

Simon_the_sorcerer3122d ago

In other words, the devs will have to change the DoomRL into something else?

TGG_overlord3122d ago

As far as I can tell that would be correct...I think that the Jupiter Hell project is homesafe though.

Littil_Devil3122d ago

For now, they might even pull the plug on that one as well.

Simon_the_sorcerer3122d ago

Isn´t there a risk that Zenimax could sue the devs for loss of incom or something?

Littil_Devil3122d ago

I´m not even sure if that´s enough, because DoomRL is all over the Internet.

Simon_the_sorcerer3122d ago

Well, a lot of people have downloaded the game, and there´s quite a lot of live download links to be found as well. So, yeah.

TGG_overlord3122d ago

For now, just look at Nintendo...They use bots that crawl all over the Internet to do DMCA claims and whatnot.

Littil_Devil3122d ago

That´s why it´s never a good idea to use a famous IP/trademark in your title name...

Simon_the_sorcerer3122d ago

True, but that also makes me wonder why ZeniMax doesn´t go after Brutal Doom and Brutal Doom 64? Not that I want that, but it makes no sense to me why they would slam DoomRL but not those games.

TGG_overlord3122d ago

I have no idea whatsoever, maybe they saw red when the devs launched the Jupiter Hell Kickstarter campaign?

Simon_the_sorcerer3122d ago

@Littil_Devil "For now, they might even pull the plug on that one as well."
Don´t give them any ideas now...

TGG_overlord3122d ago

It would be a real shame if that would happen, because the game is doing really will on Kickstarter.

TGG_overlord3122d ago

@Simon_the_sorcerer "Well, a lot of people have downloaded the game, and there´s quite a lot of live download links to be found as well. So, yeah."

The installer version has been downloaded almost 80K times:

@Simon_the_sorcerer "Isn´t there a risk that Zenimax could sue the devs for loss of incom or something?"
There is always a risk of such a thing, I got no such vibes while reading through their e-mail to Kornel Kisielewicz.

ZeniMax Hits Jupiter Hell Devs With Notice Over DoomRL Connection

ZeniMax Media has slapped Jupiter Hell developer, Kornel Kisielewicz with an order to remove all references to Doom on ChaosForge websites.

garyanderson3123d ago

That's crazy. No actions taken on the game, but freaking out about mention of it?

Dasteru3123d ago

Just decapitalize the RL. It then becomes one word and Zenimax has zero rights to it.
