On The Chopping Block: Five AAA Games That Will Never See The Light Of Day (And One That Might)

GP: "For every game that is released on the market, there are dozens that never make it passed the first production meeting. While I have no feelings towards those games because they were never shown to the public, there have been many instances where a game was shown to the market to much fanfare, and then their productions were suddenly cut short and they vanished forever.

This article is about those games. The ones that could have been AAA titles, the games that you would have expected to sell systems and launch new franchises. Why didn't these games make it? They certainly looked more than good enough. Read on to find out."

I wouldn't be surprised if we never see FFXIV on the PS3.

FinaLXiii4847d ago (Edited 4847d ago )

Jack Tretton´s biggest mistake was anoncing it

ShinMaster4846d ago

That ain't his fault. Square Enix needs stop announcing games that they don't plan on releasing in years (Versus) and releasing games no one asked for (XIII-2).

[on topic]
Project Milo - All fake.
Mega Man Legends 3 - F* you Capcom!
Fallout Online - Zzz....
B.C. - ?
Sadness - Had Nintendo made a system with more up to date specs, the game would've been released.

lol @ Milo. I didn't care about any of these, but the title reminded me of The Agency. I stumbled upon info about The Agency during the summer of 07 while doing some random web surfing, and was instantly intrigued at the prospect of getting game related texts on my cell phone. I searched constantly for new intel after that, getting more and more excited each time I found new info or footage, until the day I read it was canceled. Bastards. I still hope someone will finish it since I read it was nearly completed when it was axed.

well after hearing all the bad reviews and the glitches on ff14 for pc dont think most ps3 fans wont bover tbh

Clarence4847d ago

None of these games are AAA.

Valorous_Entity4846d ago

Wow this is a stupid article. XIV was atrocious and the fact they are even trying to fix it is hilarious to me.

Do you not see this happening during development? Like, why are we apologizing after the fact instead of stopping it during development?

Stopac20h ago

Criticism and reflection occur after the fact. The apology acknowledges the past criticisms with the new expansion and they're keeping transparency with players about it. Now that they've acknowledged it - it will be interesting to see what kind of cycle we'll get with a new expansion and I wonder if they're planning something special with beast master since they didn't mention it in the last live letter.

anast1d 1h ago

It's all good, as long as the price of the product decreases.

Stopac20h ago

The base game and expansion go on sale all the time and doesn't stay full price for very long since a new expansion is on the horizon.

If you're stating they should reduce the price of new expansions or the sub fee, no, that's not gonna happen lmao people aren't even complaining about that. They are criticizing the same old pattern of content that releases and how it is devolving into mediocracy.

"They are criticizing the same old pattern of content that releases and how it is devolving into mediocracy."

The product should be cheaper then.

PapaBop23h ago

I was unhappy with DT and have spent far less time in it than any other expansion but it's things like this that makes me respect Yoshi P. It's rare for such a high profile developer to be so candid in his assessment on a live game.

Stopac20h ago

Same, i've found my self resubbing every two patches instead of keeping it up. Don't own a home in the game so there's no point in keeping a constant sub going. The post story is getting interesting though.

Peter Molyneux recalls how Project Milo, the Kinect game with revolutionary promise, died a death

Vapourware can end up being the stuff of legend, like Rockstar's Agent, Star Wars 1313, or StarCraft: Ghost. Without ever seeing the light of day, these games never risked the possibility of being played and forgotten, and instead live on forever as the subjects of lengthy YouTube essays.

Still, Molyneux's most notable lost game (or tech demo, depending on who you asked at the time) was arguably Project Milo.

I can see the potential of the kinect hardware... its rather impressive tech, but it was just not meant to be for gaming. If anything, MS had a huge missed opportunity to have used it for the AR/VR projects.

S2Killinit32d ago

Missed opportunity? They lied. It was the biggest lie in gaming history.

merlox32d ago

You can use the Kinect as an SLS camera for paranormal investigations. So it wasn’t a complete failure.

Remember Star Wars Kinect announcement? Biggest laughable acting seen

It was built on lies Peter...you know this.

isarai33d ago

Bro that thing NEVER existed, what we got was a concept video

Knushwood Butt32d ago

"Unfortunately, as we were developing Milo, so the Kinect device was being developed. And they realised that the device that Alex Kipman first showed off would cost $5,000 for consumers to buy.

"So they cost-reduced that device down to such a point, where the field-of-view...I think it was a minuscule field-of-view. In other words, it could only just see what's straight in front of you."

Hmm, exactly what tech was in it, that was cut, affected the development? It was only ever interpreting visual and audio inputs right? The xbox was processing those inputs.

Nor do I see how the field of view thing is relevant to the discussion.

isarai32d ago

Exactly! Tf kinda BS statement was that? i don't really see how fov is relevant at all, since when do you move all around a room while talking/interacting to someone?

Amplitude32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

This is entirely untrue. There was never a 5000 dollar Kinect prototype that could somehow use a wider field of view to scan and import generated in-game items and advance AI by over a decade. Anybody that fell for this was a stupid moron child, myself included. Anybody that falls for this lie now is a stupid moron child who doesn't realize that these people *only* know how to lie.
