Jaffe: I'd like to see Uncharted 'opened up a little bit'

David Jaffe would like to see the Uncharted series with more ‘gameplay options’, saying it would be an ‘interesting experiment’ to see if Naughty Dog could pull it off.

The Last of Us will be a completly diferent aventure game from Uncharted which probably will not include many "playable cutscenes" because its an open world game and its realistic tone pretty much explains it.

@LewisDenby (below) semi-open world maybe?

LewisDenby4845d ago

"It's an open world game"

No it isn't.

MaxXAttaxX4844d ago

Not necessarily saying that it should be an 'open-world' game.

mafiahajeri4845d ago

Shut up and fix the MP in your game your getting annoying...

asmith23064845d ago

I agree. As much as Uncharted 3's set pieces blew me away, the gunfights to get to each of them were far too repetitive. Each gunfight has a few waves and each wave gets progressively tougher. Throw in a 7ft mallet head for some cqc (during a gunfight) just for the sake of it. I got bored of the repetition eventually. I thought Uncharted 2 was the better game overall.

FinaLXiii4845d ago (Edited 4845d ago )

Id love to play an rpg with with those playable cutscene moments that uncharted is very known for.

I think games next gen will have the oportunity to include open worlds and at the same time have an amazing cinematic experience, Final fantasy Versus XIII and The Last Guardian seem to be that kind of game.

LOGICWINS4845d ago

YES! I want an open world Uncharted. By open world, I mean open environments. The game can still be linear. I wanna see Drake and Elena stroll through a packed Time Square and subsequently get into a gun fight. While their shooting, you see hundreds of unique NPCs running as soon as the first gun shot goes off.

Baka-akaB4845d ago (Edited 4845d ago )

No offense jaffe , but no thanks . There are plenty and more and more "open experiences" coming through , while completely well done and mastered linear games are rare these days , and now often just a front and cover for a multiplayer game .

If Golden abyss is a bit lacking , it has more to do with ND not directing the game , than anything else .

We need variety , not everything to always follow the successful mold/template of the moment

LarVanian4845d ago

The only problem with Golden Abyss, in my opinion, was that it forced the motion/touch aspect upon you, with no option to turn it off. Overall it was a pretty damn good game and it perfectly showed what the PSVita is capable of.

Baka-akaB4845d ago

I think it was good , but lacked the magic of the true UC games .

And it's imo easy to imagine it would be better polished as a genuine ND project . But then again , in that case , it wouldnt have been ready at launch , most likely

LarVanian4845d ago (Edited 4845d ago )

SLIGHT SPOILERS BELOW

I think that the complete absence of characters such as Elena and Chloe and the severe lack of Sully may have diminished the Uncharted feel to a significant effect. I think it would have been a great idea if Elena had a little cameo on a TV screen, maybe showing her as a contestant on that reality tv-show she was on before Drake's Fortune.
I was also really expecting to see another super-natural twist towards the end of the game. I love those twists and I love how they always alter the way in which the game is played. It was therefore disappointing to see that Golden Abyss didn't feature one.

cjflora4845d ago

Other than the swipes during melee or saving yourself from a fall, they really didn't force the touch that much. In terms of the puzzles they made total sense when cleaning off an artifact or doing a charcoal rubbing. The rest of the touch controls were optional. I found the ability to use motion for precision aiming useful.

LarVanian4845d ago (Edited 4845d ago )

I wasn't just referring to gameplay. I was also referring to the menu and pause screen buttons in which you could only use the touch screen rather than the buttons.
I didn't like how you couldn't use the triangle button to pick up weapons and ammo either. I got very used to that from playing the three previous Uncharted games.

cjflora4844d ago

So I take it you're not likely a fan of the Vita's main interface requiring touch either? It was a little off putting to me at first, but I've gotten pretty used to it. It is tough though because the natural way I hold the Vita has my fingers right on the joysticks and buttons, so I instinctively want to use them to navigate.

LarVanian4844d ago (Edited 4844d ago )

I never said that, you have to understand that I have been talking about Uncharted: Golden Abyss and how touch/motion controls affected the way it was played. I think PSVita itself is perfectly fine, especially when one regards the fact that I have been using an iPhone for the past two and half years.
I'm used to playing Uncharted on consoles and I quite liked the touch implementation in areas such as the puzzles. But there were areas such as the pause menu and ammo/weapon pick up in which I would have preferred to use the buttons.

PS3and4_HAS_GAMES4845d ago

I think he needs to worry more about making his game better..last I checked uncharted 3 scored a whole lot better than twisted metal

lover20124845d ago (Edited 4845d ago )

God Of War Creator Thinks That The Character Of Kratos Took A Wrong Turn

Terri writes: "In a recent video released by the creator of the God of War series, David Jaffe, we can see that Jaffe is not fond of the direction PlayStation took regarding the franchise, and in particular, Kratos himself."

SinisterMister548d ago

Well, I personally think that Santa Monica did an absolutely phenomenal job with Kratos, showcasing insane character development in all the right ways.

Jin_Sakai548d ago

I disagree. God of War went from a brutal action game where Kratos was slaying gods to a boring father figure. God of War 3 was my favorite in the series.

Christopher548d ago

I much prefer the focused and purposeful with reason Kratos who still gets into brutal combat and still has to kill gods even though he tries not to. Past Kratos was just anger personified and did nothing but subvert any expectations of him being something else other than just rage.

darthv72548d ago

2 is still my favorite. Everything about that game is top shelf design. the scale and scope of things like fighting the colossus of rhodes to awakening the steeds of time... just epic. 3 was good, but 2 is the high point of the original trilogy (for me).

The direction santa monica took for the reboot was less GoW (god of war) and more GoW (gears of war). The whole 3rd person perspective, having a partner (even if its his son), and lack of verticality with no more jumping and creating crazy areal combos... it was difficult to come to terms with but i managed. the story was good though, but i still give the nod to greek mythology over norse (and likely egyptian if that is where they go next).

frostypants547d ago

I can see it either way. I agree that the series now has nothing in common with the original beyond superficial character appearances and general setting. They sort of used the IP to sell an entirely different style of game. That said the new games are well made in their own right.

VivaLaManual547d ago

Yes. The game grew and stopped being one dimensional. What a shame....

DarXyde547d ago

I don't even think Jaffe really understood Kratos, despite creating him. Or rather, he doesn't seem to understand how he created the fertile ground for this kind of character development arc.

He was always a warrior, but he had a very human element since day one. He had a chance to protect his family again in God of War I and Ares took them away... Again. He knows he can't get them back and moved forward as the new God of War. Fast forward, the Gods betrayed him (though he was still sympathetic to Athena at the time). Eventually, he waged war with Olympus.

He was part of the pantheon and that would've been the entirety of his story arc where he oversaw war for all time.

But the truth this, Kratos has changed, but he largely remained the same. His two constants were always pride in his family and revenge against those who have wronged him. You take those two together (a threat to his family and Gods looking to kill him) and the direction he's taken is pretty congruent with who Kratos always has been. I guess you can say Kratos would just be a merciless monster for the sake of it, but the old games never explore present aspects of the character (e.g., what kind of father Kratos was). We got a look at that, and with a boy, no less.

I find the franchise did well to age with the audience. I was an angry teen when the original came out. Now I'm kinda mellowed out with a family and I just get it.

I think it did an excellent job of connecting with the audience as we grew up. It's a bit like Toy Story in that regard.

Monstieur547d ago (Edited 547d ago )

Agree. I liked GoW 3 the best as well. There weren't enough unique boss fights in the reboot.

Crows90547d ago (Edited 547d ago )

Well he aged considerably. Define boring father figure exactly? Maybe your father was boring but don't put that blame on others.

As far as slaying gods ...you're right ...he went from god slaying to....hmmm god slaying.

The newer Kratos matured with the audience. They could have just kept doing the same game over and over but they saw it getting stale so they had to switch the formula...they did so incredibly well.

SinisterMister547d ago

While God of War 3 is undoubtedly excellent in its own manner, the "boring father figure" part is something I don't agree with. For starters, if the situation calls for it, the old Kratos is back on camera, like when he fights against a particular Aesir god in Ragnarok.

tombfan547d ago

He achieved his goal... he actually got the revenge he was so desperately needing and in the end what? It'd be terrible character development if he would just go to another mythology to kill more gods just for the sake of they being gods. They actually gave them a meaning in life, and even better, they got an amazing idea of how to create a new game with actual bealavility and a plot, not just merciless kill.

savedsynner547d ago

Agree 100% Kratos had about an inch of depth before the norse version. Now he feels like a real character, a real dad, with real reactions based on his experiences.

gold_drake548d ago

i think they did a fantastic job with Kratos.

Snookies12548d ago

Wasn't Jaffe the one who got stuck on something easy in Metroid Dread and started bashing the game because of it? From what I played of GoW 2018, they actually gave Kratos some much-needed depth. I definitely plan to finally go through the newer entries once my PS5 comes in.

tombfan547d ago

Jaffe got stuck with his young mind thinking and it really showed with his latest attempt in gaming "Drawn to Death" it was like a teenage dream that became true and also, sucked.

Christopher548d ago

This whole video was essentially him finding comments to back up his own opinion. "It looks like a lot of people think..."

Yeah, well what do the review scores, sales, user scores, and completion rates on the last two say? Anything on that?

Reaper22_547d ago

Nothing wrong with his opinion. He created it so he's earned the right to criticize. Review scores and sales have nothing to do with it. It's success was never in question.

Christopher547d ago

You should probably read the first part of my comment. He's cherry picking opinions to support his but ignoring the plethora of other opinions.

Yeah, he's allowed his opinion, but his arguing method is to act like people just agree with him and not the diverse opinions out there on the subject.

-Foxtrot548d ago (Edited 548d ago )

People won’t like it I know but he’s entitled to his opinion being the games creator

I totally disagree but it’s not going to ruin the game for us who do like it

purple101548d ago

Yeh I may or may not disagree but he created the original and without him we would have no god of war, (or maybe one that wasn’t as good). So he can say what he wants in my books

Last I heard of him he made a black ad white game with a weird sketch art style. Similar to Sega Madworld

Haven’t heard from him since
Shame

itBourne547d ago

Drawn to Death, yeh, played it at the Playstation experience, it was quite fun, an old school arena shooter. Then it came out, and everyone died quicker, so strafe battles gone. It essentially turned into die, insta spawn, use ult, get a kill, they insta spawn, ult you, you die, and just repeat that loop lmao, its was terrible.

Christopher547d ago

I just have a problem with him saying they shouldn't have called it God of War because his opinion doesn't align with theirs on the future of the IP. That part I felt was pointedly petty.

10 Years Later — 'Uncharted: Golden Abyss' Deserved a Better Fortune

A relic of its time or a buried treasure from the past?

I was really hoping this would have made it into one of the collections. Like how they did with the GoW PSP games.

VenomUK1219d ago

I recall just playing the start on PS Vita but not much more and many Uncharted fans wouldn't have played it either so this 'unknown' chapter could be ripe for an expanded version for PS5.

TiredGamer1219d ago

Agreed here. Played it back on the Vita years ago, but never finished. The cramped Vita controls and the tiny analog sticks just didn't gel with me in a game where precise headshots are half the fun. It's the first Uncharted game that I haven't completed/Platinumed, and I think much of it is control related. Really wish it was PS TV compatible (natively).

I would definitely buy it if it were released as a PS4/PS5 version.

YoungKingDoran1219d ago

If you ever play it again on Vita definitely turn on the gyro aiming assist, made it alot more fun to play and i ended up getting all the headshot trophies thanks to this- super accurate

TheEnigma3131219d ago

I loved this game. It was like an extension of the first one. Why haven't we gotten an HD release yet?

TiredGamer1219d ago (Edited 1219d ago )

Lack of available dev resources and lack of a lucrative ROI probably. I think Sony has an opportunity to sell it as a separate, standalone HD remaster for like $20. Otherwise, the effort to convert a PS Vita game to the PS4/5 won't be worth their while. Unfortunate, but that's probably the only way it'd make financial sense.

deleted1219d ago (Edited 1219d ago )

Some of the puzzles/interactivity would have to be completely reworked. I remember having to hold the camera to a bright light. (I remember being annoyed at that part bc I was playing in bed late night while my wife was asleep next to me. Ran to the kitchen at like 3am just to get past it lol)

Also the swipe battles. I absolutely couldn't stand the final boss because the swiping felt so inaccurate and it would constantly misread gestures.

I adored the rest of the game though, and even the story! It couldn't simply just be rereleased, it needs reworking for consoles. (same reason it didn't get PS Vita TV support) The rubbing parts could still work w Dualsense/DS4 though.

I'd gladly welcome it and do hope it happens eventually!

Muigi1219d ago

Glad I still have my Oled Vita.

MadLad1219d ago

Sony should have tried harder to support the Vita. It ended up just a solid emulation machine that happens to have a handful of classics.

Bigman4k1219d ago (Edited 1219d ago )

Yeah Sony gave up on the ps vita way too fast

Bigman4k1219d ago (Edited 1219d ago )

I really like Uncharted:Golden Abyss on ps vita it would be dope if they remaster it for PlayStation 5
