Is smaller better? Battlefield 3 dev discusses Close Quarters DLC

When people think of the Battlefield franchise, there's a pretty clear image of what pops into their heads. Massive maps and vehicle combat have been the defining staples of Battlefield games since 1942. But, despite a loyal fanbase, EA's flagship shooter hasn't yet managed to topple the reigning king of the online FPS: Call of Duty. That franchise has very different tenets: small maps with a focus on infantry combat.

Can't we have both. Man, people complain about everything now days. If you don't like it then don't buy it. I mean, I know the series is known for big maps but would it hurt to break things up a bit. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have the best of both worlds. Oh well, just my opinion. Sales will determine if these maps are popular or not.....How many articles do we need to see of this?????

I'm not disagreeing with you, but Battlefield has had the best of both worlds, in some ways. They've always done a fairly decent job of having large open battlefields mixed with city/building/corridor areas for CQC and areas for vehicles. Its just sort of odd that they would only focus one one aspect only. Its not what most long time fans wanted. I mean Battlefield is an awesome franchise with destruction, vehicles, CQC, open environments, etc...but focusing solely on one aspect only is sort of disappointing really.

BF3 could have been great, but it turned out mediocre. There is far to much emphasis on "breaking things up" instead of just making a really great, really fun, entertaining game. The game isn't bad by any stretch, but the CQC aspect is boring and you can see that they tried to funnel players into that sort of play style with their map design. I just can't play it anymore as its not fun. There will be many many more players who will take my spot that really like this sort of gameplay, but as a long time Battlefield fan, I won't be participating.

We probably don't need a million articles, I agree, but its becoming evident on how people actually feel about the map pack/gameplay direction from both sides of the fence.

Great words. I feel like the new engine might be the factor in the map design though. It is new and unoptimized. Maps got squeezed in a little bit because of this I believe.

The game needs more maps and bigger maps than all of the ones they have in it now. Certainly destruction is a positive thing. Most big open maps in Battlefield 3 give players no advantages. I am a big sniper rifle fan, but Close quarters is fun as well.

As one main feature of Battlefield 3 is instant spot. You can't hide in grass or sneak anywhere really without being tagged on someone's radar. I understand the whole lets have instant action and no silence on the battlefield, but really kills the whole vibe. You can't sneak around vehicles at all in open fields of grass. Still though it is fun at times.

Battlefield 2 and Bad Company 2 had bigger, better maps.

Well it's only ONE DLC out of 3 that we know of.

glennco4418d ago

bigger maps don't really work well on console for bf3. this is why i pretty much just play rush. it was fine in BC2 but now take another four people off the ground and put them in jets and you have about 8 people all up on the ground with the rest in the air.

for this reason, BC2 is better than BF3 on console. the 24 player count has really hurt the console versions. i know, i know... get a PC, whatever.

having said this i don't really want close quaters, just somewhere in between

Thats not what she said !!! Zing !

To answer the question bluntly . NO.

Smaller is not Bf and the worst TDM map are the small one. If you never tried TDM Karg island do yourself and favor and don't even waste your time.

Hufandpuf4418d ago

I disagree, TDM Kharg Island is quite fun.

memots4418d ago

Your crazy. It has the single worst spawn point of any map of any shooter ever.

Now with that said on a smaller scale like 8 vs 8 it can be fun.

But most idiot out there that are fan of "Nuketown" aka Noobtown this is Deja Vue all over.

Hufandpuf4417d ago

The spawns in Kharg are predictable, but at least when spawn in you get a fighting chance. Nuke Town was horrible because you'd get shot right when you spawn, but DICE fixed most of the TDM spawns. The Canals map had the worst spawns in the game IMO.

LMFAO @ the people taking this game PERSONAL. Really crying over a video game

hmmm I think there will be no old BF glory days for EA since they are loyal to their greediness and laziness :D

Knightofelemia520d ago

You're asking for a miracle with EA that will never happen unless they can exploit the money making schemes behind it.

MadLad520d ago

We'll see what happens now that Zampella is overlooking the series.
