To Remake or not to Remake - The Case Against Remakes

Last week we looked at why remakes are a good idea to help save classic titles from being lost to the ages, but as with any argument, there are two sides. This week we look at the reasons why the remake business is hurting the games industry. The topics looked at range from the financial implications, to the development time needed and then finally to how you receive your favourite titles being remade. The question is: do we really need old games remade to enjoy them all over again?

The thing is that classic games are being bastardized into generic FPS, like XCOM or Syndicate.

how are remakes anything but bad ? unless they are really outdated or suck its a great opportunity to replay them on your new console. it has to be a good game though. as long as this remake stuff doesn't go overboard.

no one needs "backyard wrestling: there goes the neighborhood HD".

Remakes are not bad, but only when in sparse succession. The 3DS saw a few too many remakes early on (Star Fox, Zelda, and more recently Tales of the Abyss). Many of these were just ports with improved graphics or in TotA's case, just a 3D upgrade.

But remakes, whether they be homey little ports or actual remakes with new content can actually be beneficial to both the industry and to consumers alike.

Here's the scoop: Capcom is making a brand new Devil May Cry game (titled DmC) featuring a newly designed Dante. They walked into this consciously knowing that there would be a massive fan backlash. Not long after more trailers come out do we get confirmation of an HD remake of the first three Devil May Cry games with updated graphics and trophy/achievement support.

Now at first glance you would say, "Why not cancel the new game and remake and just make a new and proper DMC game?" Here's why; Capcom still feels adamant about releasing this new DmC game regardless of what the fans say. They can release this new title for anyone interested as well as the HD trilogy remake for fans of the traditional Dante.

Of course this is a very specific scenario so let me go a tad further with this. Assume I have not ever played a Devil May Cry game. I see this new game and I say "I want to play the old ones first." I go to the store and see the first three, remade for one of my HD consoles for a clean $40. This gives me an opportunity to experience these games for the first time without having to go out and buy outdated hardware and software just to play them.

The industry could and SHOULD be run on innovative and new content. However, taking a look back every once in a while or experiencing something you have missed is not necessarily a bad thing. At this point you have to decide what's a good value for yourself.

For example, playing Zelda Ocarina of Time for $40 with updated graphics on the go... is kind of a sweet deal in my eyes.

as long as there is extra content, OOT is a good example but for $39.99 should have included majoras mask as well that would be a cool unlockable

I like remakes and hd classics that more people could get in old francises and support devs

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

That's a pretty fucking great list

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

Yeah. That’s the first I’ve seen it anywhere near #1.

Mario 64 is great but I wouldn’t put it over Mario World.

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list is a crime.

CUnit123123114d ago

Sorry lol. I wrote the article but 5 of us voted for many different games and majority went on the list then we worked on the list. If it were just my personal top favorite we'd seen some xenoblade and star ocean as well as some others. Thanks for checking out it!

Super Mario 64 DS, a Twenty Year Reunion

WTMG's Leo Faria: "Super Mario 64 DS may not have been “better” than Super Mario 64, but it is indeed “more” than Super Mario 64, if that makes any sense. For a kid back in 2004, having a Nintendo 64 classic on the palm of your hand, with more content than the original, and a crapton of amazing minigames on the side, was more than enough to make me ignore the admittedly terrible controls I had to put up with. Two decades later, it bizarrely holds up. I can easily affirm it’s one of my favorite remakes of all time, even if it’s far from perfect… hell, possibly not even better than the game it was supposed to be an improvement of."
