Joystiq: Twisted Metal Review

David Hinkle writes:

"We all have guilty pleasures, those things we enjoy but are afraid to tell others about, because deep down we know how terrible we are for enjoying them. The Twisted Metal series has always been that way for me. As my prepubescent self might have exclaimed at the series' introduction so many years ago, "A clown with a perpetually flaming head drives around in an ice cream truck killing people? That is so cool."

Imagine my stifled pleasure when a new installment of Twisted Metal was announced for the PS3. I envisioned how much the old arcade gameplay might benefit from some modern influence, and how much technology could augment the formula and push the series into exciting new territories.

Too bad that isn't the case here. Instead, Twisted Metal does little to shake things up and takes the safe, careful approach with its PS3 debut."

I wonder if everyone is going to review it like Battlefield 3?

Weak story/Good Online though 7/10

Even though the game is truly for online.

Jobesy4825d ago

Considering you have to play through the single player and beat challenges on high difficulties to unlock mp content, the scoring may be justified.

ISKREEM4825d ago

The only unlocks that carry over from the campaign to multiplayer are Warthog, the laser pistol, and I believe a skin pack.

TM3 is my favorite but I'll take what they bring out gladly. Fun times back in the day and great soundtracks

Cacabunga213d ago

Last one on ps4 wasn’t good at all.
Hoping for some good reboot or remake of the first 3

Dagexon213d ago

You mean the one on ps3?

Cacabunga212d ago

Yes i do, thanks! I realized too late couldn’t edit

Lego 2K Drive features an exciting mode called Brick Brawl, inspired by Twisted Metal. Players can create, share, and upload various cars, including ones like Sweet Tooth. The game boasts thousands of custom cars, ranging from the Batmobile to the Sweet Tooth ice cream truck.

Never understood the like for the series. Not my bag but I know a lot of gamers are clamoring for a new game and liked the TV. Series

TM1 and 2 are time period classics. They were a bit rough, ugly, and grungy, but they felt right during the time period they were released and they scratched that early console “death match” itch before FPS games would completely swallow that market.

Many great memories with friends playing couch co-op and 1v1. Short, and quick-and-dirty gameplay that we returned to over and over. I’d buy a remake or proper remastering of the first two games day one.

InUrFoxHole213d ago

Lol, nice! I remember having the tiger handheld or watch..

FinalFantasyFanatic212d ago

I played those so much as I kid, I bought the Twisted Metal games that were on PSN as Playstation Classics, wow, they feel clunky by today's standards, they could really use the remake/remaster treatment.

Twisted Metal: Black is when the series really hit for me. I still love that game so much. It was kind of downhill for the series after that IMO. I'd love to see the series go back to its roots, but I don't hold out a lot of hope for David Jaffe coming back from where he is these days to oversee development of a competent sequel.

Snookies12212d ago

Black was the pinnacle in my opinion. I adored TM1 and TM2, for sure. But Black brought it to a whole new level of awesome.

All I ask for is a new Twisted Metal that allows flat screen & PSVR2 cross play that also supports a wheel.
Would be heaven.

Babadook7649d ago

Wow. I like the idea of VR twisted metal with a wheel.

Rebel_Scum649d ago

They need to get the enemy AI balance right. Thats what made 2 the best in the series. Black was abysmal in that dept.

neomahi649d ago

You don't. Do sequels. If you've gotta reboot, might as well do a new IP. God of War is the only game I can say that did a successful reboot

TiredGamer649d ago (Edited 649d ago )

Isn’t the new GoW just a sequel technically?

I personally think they can leverage the roots of the series. The original TM in 1995 took place on Christmas Eve 2005, and it was the 10th contest in history. Why not “reboot” the franchise by making a prequel of sorts showing the origin story of the series and maybe linking all the future games in a brilliant way. Seems like such an obvious idea to leverage old with the new (kind of look how Doom 2016 did with its lore).

Just make it a good game Twisted Metal has it's fan base.
