With the launch of Netflix in the UK, TheSixthAxis take a look at the growth of media streaming in this generation's consoles. Has it overtaken gaming as the primary use of a console?
I think Netflix is great. I just hope they don't monopolize it and use it as a controlling tool. I notice that content is sometimes available to stream and other times disc only. I wouldn't want to be limited like Hulu Plus does. Also UK/IE is outstanding. Now that they are here, I hope it pushes into Germany so I can us it! And Feb 22 Netflix is on Vita day one!
For gamers, I would say it has not. But a lot of owners of consoles this generation are not gamers in the traditional sense (I make this distinction because I don't personally consider a casual gamer to be a "gamer," but there are those who think anyone who plays a game is a gamer). I would venture to say these people are more prone to use their gaming system primarily for Netflix. The studies and polls and such that show, for example, that "almost half of all gamers are female" don't qualify the likely distinction that many of these women use their consoles for exercise. Don't get me wrong; I don't have a problem with this method of use, but I personally don't consider someone who plays games solely for exercise a gamer. Information on the usage of Netflix should be qualified the same way: a solid definition of what a gamer is should be agreed upon- if only for the sake of the study- and the results broken down to show what percentage of gamers use Netflix (and how often), and what percentage of casuals use Netflix (and how often).
"But a lot of owners of consoles this generation are not gamers in the traditional sense (I make this distinction because I don't personally consider a casual gamer to be a "gamer," but there are those who think anyone who plays a game is a gamer)." I couldn't agree more with that comment. These days they'll consider you a gamer just because you play CofD. On topic: Netflix is indeed an awesome option to have in the current generation. Nothing beats watching anime or a few episodes of South Park after gaming for a couple hours.
