Metal Gear Rising is Not Part of Metal Gear Solid Series

Kojima Productions has been clearing up some rumors and misconceptions regarding Metal Gear Rising Revengeance following the game's unveiling earlier today.

Good to be honest it has no right to be from the trailer i have seen. Metal gear solid has basicly invented the stealth genre back on the msx/nes. This has nothing to do with that. Only reason it has metal gear in the name is brand recognition.

Metal gear solid is the Ps1 franchise, Metal gear 1 and 2 were on Nes. MGR is still a sequel to the story Metal Gear solid 4. Just like Metal Gear solid was a sequel to Metal gear 2. It's simple enough, this game is a spinoff of the franchise, but it's still cannon. Metal Gear solid is finished, it's story is anyway. It ended in MGS4. You can do prequels and stuff. But the enemies are dead. MGS5 will either be a prequel or a completely new story arc....just like Rising.

Gameplay wise...yeah we all know how that's gone down.

Rising is not a sequel to MGS4, it's a Spin-off and in my eyes it'll never be anything more than a less than average spin-off. At least, that's I gathered from that god awful trailer.

They were going to cancel it but Platinum said that they wanted to finish it. I see this game as an extra Metal Gear game and it will get Platinum Games some much deserved publicity while Kojima focuses on a real Metal Gear Solid. I don't understand the complaints with this game. It's not like it affects what Kojima is making and it doesn't take much of his time.

Raiden is not snake so why are you expecting Raiden to be as stealth as him.

He is an ultimate killing machine and his way of doing things is to go full head first. I would have been more disappointed if this game was more about stealth than hacking n slashing because that would look out of place with Raiden.

MGS5 will come and you will get stealth right now just let the people who are looking forward to this game enjoy the moment instead of crying its not MGS.

Well if you watched the E3 2010 trailer it has Raiden stalking a mech at the beginning so having the concept changed from a truly unique sounding title to this is a kick in the teeth. Solid or not.

Kojima said about it staying true to the MG ethos but this trailer was tragically over the top, spin off or not. It had the chance to do something new with a genre that essentially hasn't moved since the PS2 era.

Alas it's more slash the enemies, fight a big boss and kill it with a QTE. How innovative. I was expecting a lot more. And what happened to the visuals? They've taken a real hit.

Um, because its Metal Gear, and Metal Gear is centered around stealth? Why wouldn't we expect Raiden to be stealthy? He was the main protagonist in MGS2, where the objective was stealth. Its also fair to point out that Ninja's are traditionally stealth assassins.

I have no problem with Rising being Hack n' Slash, but comletely eliminating stealth is a bad idea IMO. You can have both, no need to turn the game in to "Ninja Raiden".

Its a game using the Metal Gear name that might not appeal to the Metal Gear fanbase. That is why fans are upset.

Glad to hear this. As big an mgs fan I am, after the trailer I saw yesterday, I wouldn't want it to be totally mixed with the MGS series. It's just not the same type of game at all. Decided not to buy it after yesterday as well, basically because it's not an mgs game

The way I see it, this isn't canon, so they are merely using the narrative to provide context and over-the-top fan-service to sell their world. It's like playing a game with multiple endings, but out of all of them, there is only one canonical, "true" ending. In Rising's case, it isn't one of those "true" endings. That's probably reserved for MGS5, in the event that it's developed.

I think I would rather start at human Raiden and develop into cyborg Raiden as the story progresses. That's just my two cents.

I think you might see that side of Raiden. Even though the bulk of the game will probably take place post-MGS4, they alluded to shedding some light on Raiden's past as a child soldier.

This is absolute rubbish, the original concept seemed more promising than this, even though I hated it back then. Don't get me wrong I love Platinum, but for fucks sake that trailer is horribly uninspiring and I don't think it's going to get any better.

the original concept didnt even work . They explicitely admit that they tried working around a lack of vision for the game , and that they worked around fluff like mocap , story and vaguely being able to cut things , instead of the gameplay .

They did the only sensible things possible , other than straight cancellation :

-Removing the Solid title and stealth parts , that were doomed anyway

- Went full on action game , as it was already the obvious path it was taking , only worse and slow as a snail

- Gave it to a studio master of action games

It is nothing like the horrible DmC , as it doesnt even pretend to be a game from the MGS serie

Dude you missing my point, I never said that the original concept was great or even worked, I just said it was better than this one. Yes Platinum knows their stuff when it comes to action games...did you watch the trailer...does it seem 'cool' to you?

I referred to DMC not that the games are similar, but that the series is being destroyed by a developer who did not create the original.

Even though this does not follow the MGS story line I still feel that this is a slap in the face to all the true MGS fans out there, such as myself.

IMO, they should have rather cancelled the game.

Actually it does a bit , as a big fan of both mgs and platinum games . And i'm much more reassured by it than the stylish pompeous piece of crap we saw months before , that as expected led to nothing .

It was the stuff of posers , with the action not looking great , and unlike advertised , with no stealth whatsoever . So basically an action game slow as a snail for no real purpose or reason .. but DUH you can cut things and watermelons .

PS : I know you didnt like the original rising either , but my point is , it sounds now miles better , and actually playable now

That E3 2010 trailer was nothing more than a tech demo/ concept video. They never should have announced the game so early since it was nowhere near being done.

Confirming it as spin off and not part of the story makes it much easier to accept the game because not all the spin off games are bad, I really like Ghost Bable and Acid games, and thus they can make it all hack and slashy and ignore the story of the games and it doesn't affect anything. Ghost Bable is an alternative sequel to Metal Gear, it's only called Metal Gear Solid outside of Japan. Solid Snake in Ac!d is a different character entirely and the Snake in Ac!d is a clone of that Snake. This "Raiden" is a different Raiden from the series, that's how I'm looking at it.

Because it's not "stealthy" and too over the top, and the "true MGS fans" are getting mad over not getting another Metal Gear SOLID game.

Deal with it, a good game is a good game regardless of the name. Do we all know it's a good game? No, because no one's ever played it. Besides, they dropped the SOLID part of the name and dropped "tactical espionage action" for "lightning bolt action". I can't imagine lightning bolt action being particularly about stealth (and yes, I know Raiden's name means lightning).

As a huge Metal Gear Solid fan I am glad its this way. The game isnt entirely created by Kojima so its not going to be that great, it will be good but not amazing just like the PSP games.
