Kotaku - Unit 13 is, Unexpectedly, a PlayStation Vita Game That Matters

Kotaku - I missed the first item we ran on Unit 13. I forgot the second one existed.

But now that I've played this "launch window" game for the PlayStation Vita, I'm paying attention. I think you should, too.

did the graphics improve that much since they first unveiled it ? i think it looks really good

disturbing_flame4556d ago

Actually if the game can be played online, it can be one of the first shooter i'll play everywhere. Even at word. :)

GraveLord4556d ago

Its a shooter. Extremely important for a successful console launch these days.

After 5 years worth of disappointment, I have very little faith in Zipper. Oh well, I guess we'll just have to see if they can pull this one off. Personally I don't think the game looks like anything special.

WHAT?!? Even after MAG?

MAG was phenomenal!

BattleAxe4556d ago

I didn't like MAG, and like most of the other old school Socom fans from the PS2 days, I felt that Zipper should have been hard at work with a new Socom game for PS3, rather then screwing around with a mediocre FPS. And Socom 4 had to be the biggest disappointment of the year....it wasn't even a real Socom game.

MysticStrummer4556d ago (Edited 4556d ago )

Yeah I love MAG. I still play it quite often. BF3's big maps with low player count got so stale after two weeks that I'm not even bothering to download the Back to Wherever expansion for free. MAG is a war, and everything else is a skirmish. Too bad so few people play it now, but at least there are enough to get a game. I hope for MAG 2.

I enjoyed SOCOM4's multiplayer, but the story mode, not so much. I get tired of people bitching about that game though, saying it's not SOCOM. I played all the SOCOM games from game one day one, and I don't understand what all the whining is about.

I used to be a huge Socom fan, played Socom 2 religiously for awhile. I think Zipper has really drifted from that game - it's almost like the first two games were an accident, restricted in size from PS2's limitations. Seems like Zipper never wanted to make the Socom game that it was they always wanted bigger, wanted to make a MAG/battlefield type game.

Socom 4 seems lacking in inspiration and I think it shows zipper didn't really want to make another 'Socom' game - it's too heavily influenced by shooters this gen. I don't know though maybe it was rushed or Sony had too much imput. This game looks too much like Socom 4 to be anything special - the thing about mimicking the score system from The Club is the worst idea I could imagine, really does nothing for it.

I thought MAG was pretty good at what it did. I love the focus on communication/strategy. The amount of players can be pretty impressive at times too. Highly underrated, though Socom 2 was far more enjoyable during its prime. I think Socom needs to be handed off to someone else.

Sony might have killed the PlayStation Vita, but these games showed off its peak potential

Kevin Webb: "While one of Sony's main goals with the Vita was to produce experiences that felt like playing on a home console, the Vita produced a number of unique games that were later brought over to more powerful hardware. And as the Vita got older, independent developers began to take advantage of the console's strong hardware and dedicated player base. For example, PC games like "Stardew Valley" or "Minecraft" that had earned an indie following could be moved to the Vita at low cost, letting players take their favorite games on the go.

The PlayStation Vita may not have been a smash hit, but there were plenty of gems to be found on the handheld if you spent enough time looking."

Frobisher Says was one of the best games on the Vita. There was just nothing like it. It's such a shame that Sony didn't see fit to invest in the Vita long term.

REDGUM1904d ago

Agreed. Admittedly I brought the console only to travel with (a 41yo gamer here) finished killzone liberation and just started Uncharted odesey and Resistance games. I really only got it to play the games that just never came to ps3/4and surf the net. Its a handy console and it's a shame if has come to an end especially with no replacement in sight just yet!

ArchangelMike1904d ago

Yeah, I loved the Killzone Liberation. Although I have to say that since Sony have dedicated their focus only on the PS4 it has gone from strength to strength. I hope they keep supporting VR though - that might be a game changer for them next gen if they do.

Some excellent choices there. I spent so many hours on Soul Sacrifice and Persona 4

As much as I love the Uncharted series I couldn't come to terms with Golden Abyss. It felt like a few steps back in the series

King_Noctis1904d ago

Danganronpa, Stien Gate, and especially Persona 4 are some of the best titles that available on the Vita.

I will miss this console.

Chevalier1904d ago

So many great Visual Novels on the Vita

VariantAEC1901d ago

No Freedom Wars or Killzone Mercenary?
Both deserve remakes. Mercenary is cannon and Freedom Wars is just one of those ultra rare JRPG games I found fun and think could appeal to a wider audience.

A Look at All of the Third-Person Shooters Available on Vita

VGChartz's Adam Cartwright: "Thanks to some solid late-in-life Japanese support, and a sea of backwards-compatible games, the Vita’s library of third-person shooters is a lot better than it first appears, covering a variety of sub-genres from horror to stealth to tactical, all the while providing games that are a tonne of fun to play."

Missed so many games.

Also backwards compatibility differs from region to region.

Literally some stores like the NZ/Aus store will allow syphon Filter 1 and 3 but not 2 and the USA store is different again

IanTH2088d ago (Edited 2088d ago )

I haven't done it in a while so unsure if it has changed, but you used to be able to download any PS1 or PSP game to a PS3 and then transfer it to the Vita and it just worked - regardless of whether it showed as something you could buy in store for, or download directly to, the Vita. It opened up a huge library of back-compat titles that way.

What's missing, out of interest?
