Quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 Android tablet shows some gaming goodness

While it’s no secret that the processing power required to run Google’s latest Ice Cream Sandwich update may be a little too much to handle for older Android devices, there is one that doesn’t even feel it.

That’s because it’s the first device to feature NVIDIA’s new quad-core Tegra 3 processor, and it makes light work of the fancy features found in Ice Cream Sandwich, as well as 1080p high profile video playback, and a quad-core optimized version of the game Riptide GP.

BTW, for anyone interested this tablet releases next month $499 for 32gb model :)

MasterCornholio4958d ago

Wow that's a great price. It beats the iPad 2 in terms of performance and price. Now that is competitive.

Cant wait for the upcoming quadcore android cell phones loaded up with Nvidias tegra 3 processor.

At this rate phones will quickly eclipse the Vita and since Vita can already do current gen console like graphics. If Phones surpass that and get HDMI output (which they already have) along with bluetooth controller support it truely will be epic having a device that does it all.

@below

I completely agree. Androids and Iphones already have the casual market, which to be honest was the larger part of the pie. 3DS and Vita need the casual base too, unfortunately for them this wont happen. Casuals rather carry around 1 device then having multiple devices.

Since these devices are getting yearly upgrades and most people tend to change Cellphones every 2-3 years anyways, its like getting a free upgrade to graphics performance as well. Something which doesnt happen with dedicated devices like 3DS or Vita, in the long run both the dedicated devices will be left in the dust. Along with bluetooth controller support these phones may grab a good pie of the hardcore market too.

Fishy Fingers4958d ago (Edited 4958d ago )

Few more mobile device generations and we'll be at the point where stand alone devices aren't needed. Hell, for basic users we already are.

Edit: to be clear I think there's still plenty of room for Vita and 3DS, although I think this will be the last gen.

MasterCornholio4958d ago (Edited 4958d ago )

While I do agree with you on some points. It will be a long time before the majority of games take advantage of quad core processors in mobile phone. Dual core phones have been out for a while now and there are not many games that take advantage of the chips. So what I am trying to say in a more simple manner is this.

Devs won't create games with vita like graphics if there isn't an install base large enough to produce good sales.

These phones sell in the millions mate, Check out the sales figures on the Iphone and Androids. They far exceed anything Vita and 3DS can do.

Question is how many people will buy such games if available on these phones, the base is certainly there. Do you possibly think in the next 6 months an Iphone 5 or Samsung s3 if announced wont sell in millions? these phones will certainly outsell the dedicated handhelds. Its because phones are a necessity these days by everyone.

If devs are making games for the Vita, porting them over to the cellphones wont be hard i can assure you of that. Its like what hey currently do, on the 3 major platforms (PC, PS3, 360) make a game for all 3 of them then port it for every system. Same will happen with the Cell phones wait and watch.

SKUD4958d ago (Edited 4958d ago )

I wonder how long the battery will last under heavy use. Never been sold yet on the whole tablet systems due to poor battery life across all platforms.

MGRogue20174958d ago (Edited 4958d ago )

It's really interesting how the cores of the processor work.. switching on & off when they're needed ti improve battery life.

See: http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Very nice technology.. but it's currently in tablets which are crap, I want to see this tech in mobile / android phones.

AMD is really building hype around their unique partnership with Microsoft to help and build an advanced and seamless Xbox ecosystem across all Xbox consoles and devices.

I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimized chips" though? Seems ambitious.

Next year´s Xbox Showcase already looks promising and exciting. Here´s hoping they deliver.

They had best show 3yrs in a row. Heading for another

Obscure_Observer said “I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimised chips" though? I’m speculating of course, but this could mean a spec bump every year or two, so that even if the PS6 or Steam Deck Home is released a year after ‘Xbox’ Microsoft can release an updated model that has a higher spec.

But Microsoft forgot the games.

KwietStorm_BLM12h ago

It's X3D chips for console. Everyone knows this. And it's been rumored in the PS6 forever.

Ganif10h ago

Correct.

"Sony's PlayStation 6 reportedly will feature an AMD semi-custom APU with a Zen 5 CPU and UDNA GPU, capable of 4K 120FPS and 8K 60FPS gaming. The console will include X3D cache and advanced AI upscaling technology."

I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released.

Notellin6h ago

You should have just lead this comment with the fact that you have zero understanding of technology in the consoles and instead have a Toms Hardware online forum level of education.

Very interesting theory. Still not sure how MS would actually make it work.

How old is the tech in consoles? It's not a huge announcement. It's marketing and you know it is.

Some odd, deliberate wording, no branding, not 'Xbox consoles, Xbox handhelds' specifically, feels and sounds like they're building towards hardware that anyone can be used or licensed to/by themselves and other manufacturers.

Multiplatform software and hardware 'Xbox/AMD APU'.

Obscure_Observer1d 4h ago

I guess you missed Sarah Bond´s next generation Xbox announcement this week, were she clearly states:

"I´m thrilled to share that we´ve established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including, *our* next generation *Xbox consoles*."

But hey, I don´t think you´re entirely wrong, maybe MS will build their own Xbox consoles while licencing other manufactures to build and sell their own Xbox branded consoles. Who knows

Shares vision....we provide chips for money, this deal will sell many chips, we will make lots of money...good vision

Christopher1d 4h ago

The marketing behind this is so heavy that I worry about the actual outcome. Why are they just not showing us the product, why all this talking in market speak?

Lightning7723h ago

Probably because the next xbox isn't ready to release yet?

The marketing and rumors seem to be heavy out of no where. The rumor was a 27 release but it maybe it could be 26 new console launch instead.

Who knows.

Eonjay11h ago

There PR is alrways super heavy handed. No one is acutally buying an Xbox as is.
Also it is very early to be talking so much about a next gen console.

Obscure_Observer6h ago

There´s a lot of people interested on Xbox Next and its ability to run games from major stores like Steam.

We know that the PS6 is just around the corner as well, but so far, no news on what it might improve over the PS5 or PS5 Pro.

However, Sony already made public that their priority and actual focus is the PS6. So its not "very early" to talk about next gen when the very console manufactures are talking about it.
