Is MMO Right for DQX?
Electron Gun's Governor talks about the latest incarnation of the Dragon Quest franchise, and posits that an MMO may not be the right move for the series:
"The Dragon Quest series is not particularly known for being innovative. The original Dragon Quest for the NES came out in Japan in 1986 and established a number of the core gameplay mechanics that became standard in RPGs of the 8-bit and 16-bit era. Since then, the Dragon Quest series has evolved only slightly, retaining most of the same core elements throughout the franchise, even as advances in hardware have pushed the graphics forward. The basic combat element found in the series’ most recent entry, Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies for the Nintendo DS, is fundamentally the same as the combat found in the series’ earliest NES titles. While the newer games might feature more content than the older games, each game’s basic gameplay remains the same. Regardless, the series remains wildly popular in Japan, and it appears to be gaining a small but devoted following in North America as well. In short, the philosophy of Dragon Quest’s development team can be summed up by the old saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”"
