The Thing (1982) Review

The Thing (1982) Review

When John Carpenter’s The Thing was released in 1982, it was met by almost universal critical disdain and tepid box office response. Despite its initial lack of success, the film has grown a devoted cult following over the past thirty years, fostered by comic books and video games and with directors like Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Spaced) citing it as an influence. This week the film’s legitimacy is further cemented when a prequel, also called The Thing, is set to hit theaters. With its themes of paranoia and “an enemy within”, The Thing seems even more relevant now than it did three decades ago and this seems like the perfect moment to revisit it.
