The Advocate does some explaining with regard to the industry's unique tax status and its current political ramifications:

The pain we (at least those of us over 18) can relate to is taxes. Yet, as an article published in the New York Times about a month ago informed the world, the video game industry is deeply entrenched in a fiscal debate that has gridlocked Washington. In order to understand how the video game industry plays into a debate about fiscal responsibility, it’s important to understand some background first."
