In late 2006, I was introduced to Xbox Live. It was absolutely brilliant. I could play anybody, at any game, anytime. For the next few years I was set, and spent most of my gaming time playing online. That is, until the novelty wore off. What really makes a great multiplayer experience? In an online world of high-pitched, abusive northern ten year-olds, it’s easy to forget how great things were in the good old days, with a just room full of friends and two controllers.
Former PlayStation US bigwig Shawn Layden has weighed in on the subject of video game preservation during a chat with Lan Parties, stating that more should be done by the big players in the industry to help preserve games.
Preservation is important. I’m hoping that more people in the industry, certainly the big players, begin to realize that there’s an obligation and responsibility. This isn’t throw-away stuff we’re making. This is stuff that should be around for a long time because future generations will enjoy it in the same way that we have and it’s criminal that we’re not doing more to protect it.
Sony in particular has come under attack for its poor attitude towards game preservation, having originally announced plans to shutter the PSP, PS Vita, and PS3 stores back in March 2021. This was met with widespread backlash, resulting in the format holder confirming the Vita and PS3 stores would remain open.
Whilst the compang does the bare minimum with backwards compatibility?
Does this mean we can have a lot more "Playstation Classics"? I don't feel like we're getting enough for what was promised, at least they added a few games this month.
Sony is in a position where they could do a lot, with their premium games. They have all the systems in place to do something cool on the psp, ps2 and psx front, but they don't really want to, it seems.
Online multiplayer is back for 11 more games thanks to Insignia's XBL 1.0 replacement service running on Original Xbox consoles and the Xemu emulator on PC. Multiplayer, voice chat, leaderboards, etc. have been a monthly addition for many games from Xbox's past library thank to the team at Insignia.live! The 11 new games are now playable online once again after 13+ years.
Booo!! I was hoping that was Rainbow Six: Black Arrow...Boo!! again. I thought this coming to Xbox. I don't even read it I was so excited.
Has everyone completely forgotten Blinx?
Microsoft never could maintain a longrunning decent 3D platformers series of their own
Not sure if it was Xbox only back in the day but I'd love a current gen jet set radio!
I really could've never played Local multiplayer good. I hated that the screens to be Split.
Online changed the gaming scene for me which is why i switched from Console to PC in 2002 for the online play and went back to console with the 360/ps3 because they had my favorite feature.
Use to love couch co-op, but the one thing that i hated about it was the screen divide , wish some one would create a couch co-op where the line was no longer visible. does anyone know if possible at all.
Love local play, its always better to play with friends in the same room. Even better when you can play with those same people and go online, like in halo, warhawk, and cod.
Because the ping is 0 or 1 ms.
Anonymous Trash talking is one of the worst - it comes from people who would be afraid to say nasty things eye to eye to a real person.
I remember LAN parties where everyone knew each other - The first DOOM and the first Warcraft and Command & Conquer. I would wack the head of the dominating player with a roll of paper, and all would still laugh. That's fun.
However now that my friends and I are all in our 40's, there's hardly any time left for a gaming night - only time to meet for some coffee. Life takes over.
