Battlefield 3 Beta: PS3 graphics and player models concerns

Product-Reviews writes: There are going to be some graphical limitations between the PS3 and PC platforms of the game, and some screenshots provided from the PS3 beta does a good job of highlighting this.

We don't want to be too critical, but you may feel that player model visuals are not too far off from models seen in Bad Company 2, and it does give you an example of just different visuals look compared to the PC version

No big deal imo..Battlefield 3 is about the gameplay, not graphics and on console..it plays just fine! Obviously PC is going to look better, but it is a beta after all.

Motorola5008d ago

C'mon this isn't a beta. It's more of a demo with a Beta stamp on it...

Ser5008d ago

You couldn't be more wrong.

Serious work needs to be done regarding the squad system and friend invites.

It's a beta through and through. Anyone who is currently playing it knows this.

M-Easy5008d ago (Edited 5008d ago )

Its a beta why cant you understand that? Guess what? In the upper right hand corner of the screen when your playing it, it says BETA right there.

Anyway I'm loving this beta wish we had another map.

StanLee5008d ago (Edited 5008d ago )

Today is September 27th, the game releases on October 28th. That's 1 month's time. It's a demo. They can call it whatever they want, but it's a demo.

Washington-Capitals5008d ago

Its all about the gameplay... yeah your right, and the gameplay from PC vs Consoles is quite different. The 60FPS vs 30FPS difference is huge. People playing or watching vids of console footage need to go see / play the PC version. You'll see what the big difference is.

NOT TO MENTION, it takes 10 mins sometimes to get into a game on my ps3. On my friends pc, we were able to get into games instantaneously.

Dante1125008d ago (Edited 5008d ago )

PC vs PS3, Xbox360 consoles. Epic lol. But isn't it possible that the compressed beta compromised some elements of the game graphically, like the similar of the Bioshock demo (Man, was that a war then)?

Edit: I think it could be considered a beta since they're testing the mp aspects and server stability with large volumes of people. If they miss something or glitches are found, they could tweak it if needed with "Day 1" patches :D...:(.

ambientFLIER5008d ago

Just because the full game launches in a month, doesn't mean that it couldn't be a beta...nobody said they couldn't patch it on the first day or first week with all the bugs that have been found up until that point.

gumchewinasskikr5008d ago

washington-capitals

You just started gaming today or something? Since when did everyone expect B3 on Ps3 to look like PC? Seriously you are an idiot if you expected that and judging by so many gaming sites writing these types of articles, based on a demo/beta, shows there are a lot of idiots in the media. AND where are the articles about the 360 version? Is that up to par with PC?

Motorola5008d ago (Edited 5008d ago )

Yeah it's not like the game isn't coming out next month. This is a demo. The game is COMPLETED! They will only patch things from here and not do anything drastic... Uncharted 3 Beta, Assassins Creed Revelations Beta, Gears 3 Beta have all taken place at least 2 months before release... Yes, they will patch bugs that people experienced during this "beta," that doesn't make it a beta. Game is complete, they will patch minor bugs and tweak weapons from here on out.

Corax5008d ago

@Washington-Capitals lol I put money you don't have a PS3 or never have played the beta on PS3 before. Maybe it is just me but I get into games instantaneously. Maybe you need to check your internet provider IF you really have a PS3 but you're trolling from my side of the table. More beta tomorrow for me good night

Heartnet5008d ago

very much so and any bugs that appear just gives DICE the excuse oh its only a beta...

Kleptic5008d ago

when the 'beta' is released has absolutely zero to do with whether or not its a 'beta'...

people don't even understand what a beta even is anymore...or more appropriately; a 'beta test'...

I agree with people saying the game is not going to have many visual improvements over whats been shown so far, but the state of the game is very much a buggy mess right now...making it obviously not a 'demo', as it is doing very little to illustrate the quality of the finished game...which is exactly what a demo is used for...

but gravity problems (stuff keeps floating around), sprint button glitches, wonky physics when lag is introduced, sound cutting in and out...graphical hiccups...all three versions have these problems...

DICE also stated this version of the game is over a month older than their current build, so a lot may be fixed already...but I 100% guarantee BF3 will ship with a day 1 patch addressing issues pointed out in feedback from this beta test...its not a demo, EA/DICE are encouraging feedback in order to work out possible balancing issues, etc...

AKS5008d ago

That's not true, actually. There are locked servers I can't access in which they are testing, and there are still aspects of the available maps that need some tech fixes and polish (sinking slightly while prone in certain areas is one example; it's a jittery pain when it happens). Letting the public try some of it out now helps them work out some of the key bugs online before the official release in addition to the added exposure to potential consumers you mentioned.

JellyJelly5008d ago

If you believe the final version will be like the beta you are off your trolley.

gamingdroid5008d ago (Edited 5008d ago )

Printing discs and shipping games out to retailers needs roughly 2-3 weeks, so the game better go Gold now or in the next 1-2 weeks.

The beta (or more appropriately demo) isn't going to do anything, but at best balance a few weapons.

It's too late to re-balance map, add players or do graphical improvement.

It's a done deal! What's the matter? It didn't look like PC footage that EA kept peddling and every fan kept hyping?

We hit a ceiling a with consoles, what you get from now on out will be tiny little upgrades like squeezing juice out of stone.

@Motorola
***They will only patch things from here and not do anything drastic... Uncharted 3 Beta, Assassins Creed Revelations Beta, Gears 3 Beta have all taken place at least 2 months before release...****

Both Gears of War 3 and Halo: Reach had a "true" beta in May for release in September, that is like 3+ months. Uncharted 3 also had 3+ months.

BF3 had a month!

Controversy5007d ago

I had a blast in the Beta last night on PS3, but ya, there are some serious bugs that need worked out!

Kleptic5007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

GamingDroid: you're looking at it without factoring in all the variables...

a major one being the age of the 'demo' we are participating in...recent tweets from the developers say the build is nearly as old as the e3 footage (showing operation metro for the first time)...and that is well behind the release build just about to be pressed...so the fact that its only a month from release has nothing to do with how old this version is from the release version...

and that doesn't matter as a day 1 patch can easily introduce balancing parameters, gameplay tweaks, and networking changes...as well as graphical changes...so feedback from what is going on now can, and will, easily change the release build of the game...

and the look of what we are playing has no grounding on what the final game will look like...it might be the same, it might not...we don't have enough information at this point...

and people always take sides when a beta is released...when Halo 3's beta dropped, everyone screamed 'its just a beta, the final game will look much better' because it was immediately met with 'this is it?' visually...it didn't...it looked identical in almost every detail...Warhawk's beta, which released at the same time, had major graphical problems (clipping issues, clouds disappearing, etc.) that were not in the final release...and finally Killzone 2...the beta for that game had an entirely different color pallet, lighting system, particle effects, and a number of other other differences that were immediately noticeable when playing the final release...the beta still looked great, but its a good example of how much can be changed visually between a beta and release...

so...all i'm saying is that everyone needs to stop acting like they know the answers with BF3...the PC version has a considerable amount of graphical tweaks that are locked out...only texture detail is available in ultra settings, everything else is maxed at high...so obviously the PC version will be able to look MUCH better on the proper equipment in a month...the console may look identical at release to what it does now, or they may have a similar situation where fidelity is marginally bumped just by proper networking optimization...

point is...no one knows yet...and its arrogant to act like you do...

Dee_915007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

Wow people think its a demo because the game is coming out in a month...i dont even know....
n4g people never ceases to amaze me

Why would they call it a Freakin beta if it was a demo ?
what type of satisfaction would they get from doing this?
What would be the purpose of doing that?
Patching and updating was the first thing to come to mind
or they already have the final version that they are still working on and just letting us play an earlier version
I mean theres 100 possibilities why they gave us a beta instead of a demo.

gamingdroid5007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

@Kleptic

I don't disagree (and said as much in my comment) about balancing updates. You do that in a patch all the time. However, unless the "beta" is 3-4 months old, there aren't going to be much changes. In fact, testing such an old build will give you very limited value. In addition, testing takes time and you don't drop anything in release without proper testing.

Graphical changes will certainly almost be minimal, because you don't performance tune major features at the end of the cycle. You fix bugs, performance tune the ENTIRE game and cut out features to meet your goal.

Will there be changes? Sure, it just won't be magical like people are suggesting it will be. It probably won't deviate too much from what you see now, maybe a little more polish.

@Dmarc
***Why would they call it a Freakin beta if it was a demo ?

For marketing reasons it sounds much more exclusive, not to mention if there are any issues people would just use the "it is a beta" card. Just look in the comment history here.

***Patching and updating was the first thing to come to mind

To me, it indicates an unpolished game. Almost no footage, super late "beta" or demo. Even the comments Dice are given seems almost distressing and in some cases attacking their customers/fans.

Sounds like a dev studio under lots of pressure to me, but it wouldn't surprise me because it is EA. Remember EA spouse?

http://ea-spouse.livejourna...

I'm jumping the gun here, so I hope I am SOOO WRONG!

Dee_915007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

Thats it ?
Marketing ?
Jesus

well who knows I dont know Im over it
im just a consumer

Btw I thought there was PS3 footage back since E3

JokesOnYou5007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

So BF3 has a late *Beta and the game is taking hits for not looking anywhere as good as PC version, NOW all the BF fans want to blame the media as if EA/Dice had no part in pimping the PC version as if the console versions would look like (very close) to PC,.. why am I not surprised. Nothing against BF it will still be a great game but for those who constantly trolled every MW3 article with talk of BF3 the stuff I'm seeing from this *Beta ps3 footage isn't looking much better, hell I don't even think its much of a improvement at all. Now lets be realistic here, EA/Dice can call this a "beta" all they like but at this point its nothing more than a demo, unless they are going to suddenly delay the game, there is simply not enough time to make drastic graphical changes, just bugs, glitches, balancing a slight polish to the graphics thats it. Also the theory that its a "much older" Beta version they are using is ridiculous because the newer build may have other flaws that will not be in the older version, the best way to test a beta is to test the latest and best available version you have then allow the public/testers to make as many changes/fixes as possible right before you go gold. lol, Well in the interest of full disclosure I've always been more of a COD fan, so maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about.

GunofthePatriots5008d ago

it wouldnt be a big deal if EA didnt brag about the graphics so much. there are a ton of jaggys, muddy textures, soft spots and overall low res.
i think/hope it's just because of the beta and can't make it too large so they had to sacrifice a few things.

moeqawama5008d ago

That's the problem with flaunting the PC version so much... they set a standard that the console versions could not match, which is why people are having such a hard time accepting the fact the they will not look as good as the PC version. It's EA's fault. They should have showed the console versions from the beginning,to ease people in, just like Activision does with COD3. I'm sorry, but it's the truth.

tr00p3r5008d ago

Yeah, one big mistake was EA admitting that the PC will be the best version of the three, since it usually goes without saying.

But by saying that they have created this big 'crisis' over console quality, a problem they could have easily avoided..

modesign5008d ago

alot of times multiplayer graphical settings are lower than campaign settings, trust me, when playing BF2 MP/campaign, the graphics are toned way down on multiplayer when comparing it to the single player campaign, so im not to worried for the end product.

Bladesfist5007d ago

Its a PC game, Pc is lead platform. Showing PC is what they are going to do. And of course make more money as console players will expect simmilar.

".Battlefield 3 is about the gameplay, not graphics and on console"

I HATE it when people say this.

The on going nonsense since 2006 about gfx and suddenly its about gameplay?
Hell no, this is suppose to be a realistic shooter. This is the type of game that actually NEEDS the fidelity you can get on a PC.

ECM0NEY5008d ago

BF is far from realistic. Try RO 2

Shackdaddy8365008d ago

It's about gameplay for me... I still play BF2 just for the gameplay.

Kleptic5007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

Sidar: your argument goes out the window because of games like Halo 3 and CoD...those are perfect examples of games simply with acceptable graphics...beyond addictive gameplay...that both shattered records of sales in popularity regardless of if elitists bitched about a muddy texture here and there...

or killzone 2...which was a monument of graphical fidelity that crushed expectations of what could be done with a video game console...and struggled with sales and popularity because people didn't like the feel of the game, and therefor 'didn't like its gameplay'...

in all 3 examples...gameplay has had WAY more to do with a shooters success than anything graphically...

and since 2006?...this has been going on since before most N4G users were born...the best looking games haven't always been 'the best games'...yet internet users tirelessly go back and forth over meaningless details either way...

either way, i hope everyone complaining about graphics does indeed buy the PC version...I'm sure the last thing my friends and I want is a guy on our team stopping to whine about a bland rock texture in the middle of no where...if anything, all this bull shit is just making cod players look like a better community than what BF is building...those games don't look special at all...yet no one sits around screaming about it, and its still handing every other shooter franchise its hat...

5119ent5008d ago

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF5008d ago

This is a DEMO. This is not a beta. So when Forza 4's Demo drops in 2 weeks or so.. are you guys going to call that a Beta as well?

No.

BF3 is being stamped onto disc right now as I type, and the game is going gold. Be ready for this. This is the game. Don't be mad. You still have 2 weeks after to get COD.

ambientFLIER5008d ago

You DO realize that they can make a patch based on all the bugs found in this "demo" and patch the game as soon as it comes out?

gumchewinasskikr5008d ago

You kidding right. I hope you don't expect better graphics in COD.. LOL My cell phone can run COD.

Hufandpuf5008d ago

I've been playing the beta, and it's a beta. But that's not a bad thing because the game runs fine on consoles, and it's definitely not a letdown. This game is amazing and I'm sure it will win multiplayer game of the year. Ive played it and I think it's fantastic.

JoGam5008d ago

Its a Beta dude. Its not a opinion but fact. Its what ever DICE is calling it and they're calling it a beta. Now if Forza 4 releases a Demo, than its just that a demo. I don't care what anybody else calls it. It what it is. A Demo. Again not an opinion but fact.

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF5008d ago

@ambientFLIER...

of course i know they can patch it. Where did I say they wouldn't or couldn't even if it was a demo? Of course they're going to patch stuff... just like COD will do , just like Halo does and all the rest. Where did that come from you? All I'm saying is let's be real. This is a demo. Do you all think that Forza 4's demo coming out is a beta? No, of course not. It's a demo. It's coming out a month later or so... just like BF3 is and it's demo.

They don't release beta's 1 month before release. Unless you guys want to call testing the connection of the players right now as the beta.. and that THAT part of this is the beta. I can concede that. That part is for sure a beta I would think... but the actual game itself.. it's ready for release. THIS IS THE GAME! And yes they'll patch stuff.. but this is the game! It's a demo, sans the connection testing.. which I'm glad they're doing that. Wish COD was testing that as well with a demo.

modesign5008d ago

omg, you fail for thinking this is a demo. if EA released the first 30mins of a level then that would be a demo, because you are "demoing" a single player campaign, were as if EA is testing out its server capacities and correcting bugs and glitches then they release a "beta", so your a tard for thinking this is a demo. retard

SCW19825008d ago

Your wrong, Red Orchestra 2 had the beta go up until a week and a half before launch and the retail copy was much more polished and balanced then the beta. Dice has already admitted this is an old version of what they are using and that certain things you find in the Beta have already been polished and tweaked. Oh and go Suck COD's dick you little bitch.

gamesmaster5007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

regardless of how close this beta was released to the actual release date of the game. Battlelog, the beta terms of service and feedback forums prove its a late beta to pave way for patches and other hotifxes on launch day. the only person that says its a demo is you and other cod fans. The people who matter, dice and the media, are calling it a beta. so suck it up.

its a beta, play it before you say its a demo.

FACTUAL evidence5008d ago

Just knew console version of BF3 waas going to be meh. I'm not falling for this whole "just a beta" argument. Look at the PC beta. Why does it look good?? Next game I'm ready to see look a little crappier on console is rage...lets see how amazingly different the graphics become at retail.

AKS5007d ago

Why does the PC version look good? Maybe because the graphics cards I'm using to run it (6950s) are new and each cost as much as an entire PS3 ($250). There's a MASSIVE difference in hardware power between my PS3 and PC. Anyone expecting parity between a high end PC game and a 6-year-old console is dazed and confused.

cyborg69715008d ago

If this is a demo, then all of the cod's from four on have been betas.

Launch day patch that's what's gonna happen. Making it a beta. Tards.

narutogameking5008d ago

lol saying Battlefield 3 is about gameplay....lmfao. Everyone knows this game is all about the graphics. Too bad the console versions are really disappointing compared to what EA has been promoting(the PC version)

Hufandpuf5008d ago

We all knew it wasn't going to be on par, but I'm playing the beta on my xbox right now, and the gameplay is amazing. Don't judge before you start saying things that don't make sense.

flankhim5008d ago

The game wont change much after beta!

danswayuk5008d ago

"Battlefield 3 is about the gameplay, not graphics" are you joking, Battlefield 3 has a new engine and was going to be all about graphics.

JsonHenry5008d ago

I'm not sure what the fuss is all about. I'm pretty impressed with the console screens I have been seeing. Also the character animations are really solid.

Of course it isn't going to be on par with the PC. The consoles have not been on par with the PC since they launched 5 years ago. Why in the world would you think they would be on par now?!

I don't think that anyone that buys a console version is gonna be let down. Especially not if console gaming is your only option.

SixShotCop5008d ago

If BF3 doesn't look better then MW3 on consoles, DICE is going to have a lot of games being bought second hand.

I'll wait to get the game but from what i've seen so far, i am not impressed with the graphics at all.
