Glen Schofield: Dead Space Wouldn’t Be Greenlit Today—Publishers Are Afraid to Take Risks

Sector sat down with Glen Schofield—creator of Dead Space and The Callisto Protocol—during the Game Developers Session (GDS) in Prague to discuss the evolution of the game industry, the current challenges of AAA development, and why it's become so hard to get original ideas off the ground in today’s risk-averse environment.

It’s easy enough to say that, but why? It feels weird to me when developers say this but common sense would tell you everything about the idea itself should work.

The idea of the concept seems like a winner at whichever angle you look at it so why would publishers not greenlight it?

… it’s almost as if the majority of publishers are massively incompetent at their jobs. But there’s no surprise to anyone there.

wait it was this year ... ?
damn

P_Bomb185d ago

WOW! To think that a new Dead Space actually got pitched in 2024, only to be rejected! All EA cares about is GaaS sports and BF milk.

Concertoine185d ago

They tried to reboot it with a remake but evidently not enough people bought it. Great game, too.

I bought it full price, but it was on sale for 9 bucks by the end of the year. Sad

P_Bomb185d ago

I bought it too. Guess we weren’t enough 😭

RaidenBlack185d ago (Edited 185d ago )

Maybe EA didn't trust the team/Schofield after Callisto? And maybe the pitch was even inferior to Callisto?
We might never know and can only guess.

chicken_in_the_corn185d ago

EA probably didn't want the backlash and opposition towards new games we constantly see these days

Rebel_Scum185d ago

Dead Space is not really a series that needs to be more than the original trilogy imo. The story wasnt really that engaging with all the religious nonsense.

By all means though make another space horror not set in the same universe as DS with similar mechanics, some mystery and that would be better. Too bad EA sucks.

“By all means though make another space horror not set in the same universe as DS with similar mechanics, some mystery and that would be better.”

Schofield already tried that with Callisto Protocol. It wasn’t better.

jznrpg185d ago (Edited 185d ago )

I thought it was a pretty good game (Callisto) . Better? No, but it was enjoyable for me. I don’t buy shorter games at full price so maybe I felt I got my moneys worth for 20$

P_Bomb185d ago

I hear ya. Platinumed it at launch, don’t hate it. But Dead Space remains champ! 😇

-Foxtrot185d ago

I’d rather see a continuation of the remakes and change DS3 so much it’s basically a new game

The ending of DS3 was terrible and the lore…Necromorph moons was just silly in my opinion

Knightofelemia185d ago

Hopefully DS4 would have been better then DS3. Shame EA scrapped it Dead Space is my favorite horror I love space horror games.
