Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine Devs Challenge Gears of War

To celebrate the upcoming release of Space Marine, THQ published a poster that says “Cover is for the weak”, clearly declaring the superiority of the Space Marines (™ with a capital S and a capital M) over the space marines (lowercase s and m) like Marcus Fenix and colleagues.

Yeh they are called Space Marines but technically they are Ultra Marines!

The similarities between WarHammer 40K and Gears is they both are third person shooters with big over sized characters (who all look like they use HGH) fighting aliens in outer space somewhere.

Other than that they both are completely inspired by Doom but not ripping each other off!!

how exactly? There was no Warhammer game that played like Gears before it came out. In fact, Warhammer was a table top game and RTS before it even though about being a TPS. So explain this to me please. WH 40K Space marine is no Gears.

It's not just a table top game. It has a fully realized universe. Everything that makes up Gears Of War was well established in 40K mythos over 25 years ago.

And the whole "cover is for the weak" isn't necessarily a jab at Gears Of War since Space Marines in 40K do not take cover. Their armor is their cover and they're modified to show no fear and resist all pain to accomplish their mission.

Gears did nothing of the sort. A run and gun TPS vs a series BEST known for a great RTS (note that I said best).

Played the demo for Warhammer and I don't care who came first or who inspired who, hands down I'll be playing Gears this September.

games workshop is the left out fat kid of the entertainment industry. They inspire (more like get ripped off by) world of warcraft & starcraft, inspire gears (hello chainsaw rifle and beefy overcompensating men in armor), then try and compete with their own franchises (warhammer online and space marine) and can only succeed in imitating their own imitators.

THQ has a funny way of talking mad shit when their games are consistently inferior and sell way less copies.

Selling less copies is in no way an indication of being inferior. From the demo and what we've seen so far, quality-wise, Space Marine has plenty potential to compete against Gears 3 on an even level.

That is potentially true of the single player, but from what I've seen the multiplayer is a totally different story there.

Will be interesting to see how they compare on the co-op front though.

I am not surprised (but for some reason, am disappointed) that they would stoop to such a level.

Gears 3 is set to blow this game to shreds in regards to reviews and sales, and for good reason, its going to be "epic".

4 player co-op campaign, various co-op modes, a refined MP which showed its stength in the Beta all add up to an experience warhammer 40k sm can't match.

So when in doubt, try to trash the competetion so you can try and snag some extra sales.

ADD: How many of you who are posting in regards to how this can compete with gears actually own, yet alone played, a gears of war game? I would think few given the quality of the series when compared to footage of warhammer as well as what we saw in the demo

Being a huge fan of Gears as a whole, for many reasons, and having put more hours into gears of war than perhaps any other game, I can say, without a doubt on my part, that I will enjoy Space Marine MUCH more than any gears campaign, including 3. I've been playing Space Marine pretty much non stop since I got the demo.
Sure gears will beat WH:SM sales wise, duh, but I kind of expect crap from the Gears 3 campaign, just like the gears 2 campaign was. WH, on the other hand, I expect great things from.

I've played both gears to completion. Many hrs of mp.

I found the warhammer 40k demo functionally just as capable as gears series. And, I find the 40k universe more interesting.

Mp looks incredible in both games.

I was never into warhammer 40k until i played the demo. It's so fun. Played it over and over. I don't have a 360 so gears is out of the question, but i still want to play it.

I just played the WH40k:SM demo today and was impressed it was alot better than I expected. Still undecided whether or not I will be picking it up, im a little worried that the combat will become repetative.

I understand that they are calling out the big dog of the genre to get a little exposure and thats fine. Im sure Epic takes it as a compliment. Gears will do fine in sales. I hope Warhammer manages to pull in some decent numbers as well.

But for those who are trying to slight Gears and talk down on it are foolish. Yes games are inspired by lots of things including other games. You have no right calling yourself a gamer if you can't respect Gears' contribution to the genre and the industry. The Gears franchise is its own thing, it deserves its praise and recognition. As it deserves its criticism.
