Videogames vs. Movies: Have games replaced films as the modern popular narrative medium?

Comparing one narrative medium to another is a tricky business. Anyone who has read a Harry Potter book and then seen the ensuing film adaptation — which is to say, almost everyone on earth – knows that every storytelling method has its own strengths and weaknesses. Still, there is something particularly fascinating about the rivalry between movies and videogames. Cinema was the original popular art form, but it has spent over half a century fighting against rival media: Television, home video, and finally the videogame, which has evolved in just a few short decades from the primordial elements of Pong into the culture-defining medium of Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and The Legend of Zelda.

eh ... half of the list is unimaginative.
But yea ... we need a gritty & mature Dredd game.

I would love a proper Dredd game. It could be amazing. So much great material to draw on.

The Mummy already had a pretty decent Ps2 game.

And surprisingly, a great 2D Metroidvania game. I bought it on PS4.

I could definitely play a Kill Bill or Dredd game. If this were extended to anime, we need a new Ghost in the Shell or a remake of the PS2 game I still have, Spriggan, Ninja Scroll, etc.

Glad they transitioned Uncharted. High hopes for Tom Holland.

Godmars290929d ago

Think you mean high hopes for the movie cause they're still making badly thought out, ego driven , games to movies.

Movies i've always thought would be interesting games.

Masters of Illusion (point and click style adventure, maybe more streamlined kinda like the new sherlock games)

The raid (seriously! Trapped in an apartment complex, have to fight your way to the top, it's made to be a game)

Scanners (a noire style mystery adventure game with gritty telekinetic combat, sounds like an awesome combo to me if done right)

Terry_B929d ago

The Raid screams for a video game adaption. Raid 2 could be a bit more Yakuza similar with some of the movie antagonists being excellent bosses

CaptainHenry916929d ago (Edited 929d ago )

X-Files would be nice. They made two decent movies. As long as the original actors does the voice acting

NecrumOddBoy929d ago

A team like Remedy could really hit this one out of the park.

Dead Movie Franchises That Need Video Game Adaptations

Sometimes movies just can't stop coming out, and sometimes entire franchises just die... but what if they can be revived by a good video game or six?

Knightofelemia1214d ago

Well since LJN is not making shitty movie games for the NES I still wouldn't buy a game based on a movie every other one I have played was crap. Why make a game on National Treasure you all ready have Uncharted and Tomb Raider I really don't want to see a digital face of Nicholas Cage I can't stand him. Only good Robocop game is Robocop vs Terminator, Star Ship Troopers is a great movie I'd be curious on that one. Police Academy I honestly think I would avoid that game the movies are great but with out High Tower and Tackleberry the game would be meh. Die Hard I would want a new movie first before the game I own Die Hard on Saturn it's not a bad game. As for Blade that falls on the lap of Mickey Mouse and Marvel and who knows what they have planned.

I’m a horror buff and I’m rarely scared or get an uneasy feeling, I enjoy it. That said, I couldn’t play a descent game. Claustrophobia is the only thing that can get to me lol.
