Battlefield 3 to be on multiple discs on Xbox 360?

@XG247: Battlefield 3 has landed big time here in Cologne, Germany for the biggest video games trade-show on earth, Gamescom.

We've already seen new co-op gameplay, hands-on with 64 player online (on the PC) and been blown away with the graphical difference between the console and PC versions.

We also got a chance to speak to Karl Magnusson who's the General Manager of DICE about the size of the game.

fluffydelusions5049d ago (Edited 5049d ago )

Honestly couldn't care less either way. I played a few games on 360 that were multiple discs and it didn't bother me in the slightest. I think if getting up off the couch every 10 hours or so is of concern to you then perhaps you should take up a new hobby like going to the gym.

jriquelme_paraguay5049d ago

its not about care or not..
resignation maybe?

WANNAGETHIGH5049d ago

@jriquelme_paraguay..WTF..u made no sense.

saladthieves5049d ago (Edited 5049d ago )

I don't see a problem with this. Single player campaign on one disc, multiplayer on the other disc. It's not like half of each would be on the other disc.

Though I understand why people hate having multiple discs, but it's nothing too hard that can't make you get up and change the disc...it's not like your life depends on it. During some situations; yes it can be a problem. I have a buddy whose Disc 2 of 3 of Final Fantasy 13 got badly scratched (nobody told him to move the console with the disc spinning) and for this reason, he can never finish the game! This is a rare situation.

Other than that, multiple discs are not a problem. If you find it hard to change them (it's not like it happens every 10-20 minutes) then you have a laziness issue to deal with. The only problem I see with multiple discs is that you don't have access to all the content at once but game studios work around this issue by designing the game well with this in mind: E.g.: Mass Effect 2.

NewMonday5049d ago

i presume it will have an install option

jriquelme_paraguay5049d ago

its not about care or not...
you cant change the limitations of the DVD just wanting or caring
Thats what a mean with "resignation"

KMxRetro5049d ago

@jriquelme_paraguay: Yeah, but by not caring, nobody is WANTING anybody to change the limitations of DVDs.

You're coming across as a really, really shit fanboy.

jriquelme_paraguay5049d ago

fanboy?
ha!
and who you are to call me fanboy?
you dont know me
im talking from my perpective...
did it hurt you?

-LUKE_SKYWALKER-5049d ago

One disk with the campaign and the other with the multi-player.

Biggest5049d ago

These are the types of rumors that make my laugh on this site. The slider has two choices. How is hopefully a choice in this matter? Who is hoping for more disks?

_Aarix_5049d ago

@egidem

Ok, one thing. Whether its 1/1 disc or 1/3 disc, if any ONE disc gets scratched it wont work.

snipes1015049d ago

dont be a troll paraguay.

lil Titan5049d ago

it should come on one disc but if it doesnt would that stop anybody from buying the 360 version? i know i would be a little mad if BF3, well any game came on multi disc on PS3 but that's just me. if you stand by your 360 be ready to swap disc if needed end of story

ChrisW5049d ago (Edited 5049d ago )

jriquelme_paraguay,

We don't know you, nor do we care to. No one knows me, nor do they care to know me... Nor do I care if they want to know me.

BTW, WTF is wrong with being called a fanboy, anyway? It's not like it is as bad as having something to do with artificially inseminating a cow with two hands!

Bonobo123455049d ago

@ChrisW

When someone resorts to calling someone else a fanboy, this usually implies, to me, that they themselves are accusable of the same 'crime'.

If one has an opinion contrary to the other, then he can and will be marked a fanboy. preferences and honest opinion do not matter to some..

meetajhu5049d ago

Xbox360 a console with multiplatform exclusives and multidisc games. Just for the lulz

NukaCola5048d ago

IS this a shock? I mean the amount of information is getting bigger and bigger. I am sure many more of the big titles will need to be on more than one disc do to space. Not a big deal on a linear game like this. The issue is something like Rage or Final Fantasy XIII. Those games are meant to be open and disc swapping ruins the pacing. You didn't notice it back on PS One, but even games like that, you would miss a lot of side stuff because as you move onto other discs, they would be removed or unlocked, a cave would open up, a room would be closed, etc. I don't know how a full open game can run multiple discs. Crazy SKYRIM is only on one.

Kurt Russell5048d ago

The shit I've seen from this game so far, I am in no way surprised that the content will need more than one DVD...

I am however mad excited about getting my war face on. HORAH!

Game13a13y5048d ago

I don't care who's calling who a fanboy, but what I know is, we are not living in Stone Age. From this, I can tell who's the real fanboy.

DtotheRoc5048d ago (Edited 5048d ago )

@ Kurt Russel what teh fuck is "Horah?" are you trying to be hardcore but are actually just an ignorant poser? it changes with every branch of the service sure, but that is not at all a term/meme used in any branch of any service lol for instance in teh army it's hoorah and in the marine's it's oorah and so forth and so on. just seriously kid don't act like you're tough on the internet, it' snot really that cool and you instead just make yourself look like an idiot. also gamebaby with a name like that i hope to god you're a female.

frostyhat1235048d ago

@egidem If it wouldn't have been a game on one disc his whole entire game would be ruined! So isn't that actually a good thing that the game had multiple discs and only one part doesn't work?

Kurt Russell5048d ago

@DtotheRoc

What the fuck are you talking about? I'm 28 - so shove your kid statements up your arse... Also I am British so the shit you just looked up on wikipedia has fuck all to do with me, or my services anyway. I'm a 3D designer not a soldier, what do I care?

And I wasn't trying to be hardcore, I was trying to convey my excitement towards the new up and coming game... no hidden agenda, just a little excited about what looks to be a really good game.

You are by far the biggest dork to comment today - blowing up like nothing like that... your mother would be ashamed.

Your grammar and punctuation is terrible and far surpassed by that of the average 8 year old by the way. Now take your verbal diarrhea elsewhere biatch!.. Or learn not to rage type over nothing.

I don't really care. The more the merrier for me(don't take it in the literal sense!);)

It'd be nice if they would have MP on a separate disc and SP and co-op on a separate disc

saladthieves5049d ago

"The more the merrier for me(don't take it in the literal sense!);) "

Then what exactly do you want people to take it as other than literally?

Everyone would prefer to have all games content on fewer discs; even better when it's just one disc- it's very convenient for the user and it's also much better in terms of cost-wise for the publishers as they don't have to pay for the extra costs of discs.

OC_MurphysLaw5049d ago

@egidem...I think he is refering to the more people playing the better, so if its two discs so be it.

koh5049d ago

Actually I think he just means make the game as good as you can, then put it on as many disks as you need to. He is saying (and I agree) that he hopes that getting the game down to X number of disks will limit the game in any way.

KendrickGLS5049d ago

Yeah that would be so much better

Knushwood Butt5049d ago

I wonder how many of the people that 'don't care' have run into PS3 threads to troll mandatory installs?

ChrisW5049d ago (Edited 5049d ago )

I love trolling mandatory installs! Why? Because even PC games have mandatory installs!!! WOOT!!!

Oh wait... I mean trolling FOR mandatory installs! Err... yeah... something PRO... whatever.

Well then do you still use analog TVs with dials, flip cell phones the size of bricks and VHS tapes? TV is TV, a phone is a phone and watching a movie is watching a movie... convenience is sooooo overrated.

KMxRetro5049d ago

Yeah, and until I have an actual reason to switch from DVDs, I'll still use them. I had a reason to switch from VHS (better clarity, DVDs don't wear out) and a reason to switch from a flip phone (new phone had much more in the way of features.)

Getting up to change discs every few hours (if this is true, that is!) isn't a reason to upgrade to anything else.

fluffydelusions5049d ago

May as well get on PC owners also because games for PC still ship on DVD too.

KingSlayer5049d ago

With Steam and browser games cannibalizing PC gaming, I don't see too many current PC owners with piles of games. Until I have a reason to use multiple discs, I won't. There's got to be a time when you say to yourself...I live in the year TWO THOUSAND AND ELEVEN.

kaveti66165049d ago

@Kingslayer

You live in the year TWO THOUSAND AND ELEVEN and you're bragging about a console made in the year TWO THOUSAND AND SIX.

If you purchased a console, you made the decision to go for convenience over quality.

Stop complaining about every drawback.

And again, you have all these people disagreeing and commenting about an issue that doesn't affect them because either they're going to get the PS3 version and/or they don't even have a 360.

They're just here to make themselves feel better about their decision to buy a PS3 when they didn't have enough money to buy both.

That's what this thread is about. That's what this goddamn website is about.

KingSlayer5049d ago

@ kaveti6616
Operative word is "TWO THOUSAND AND...". I have a 360, that's why I think it's shit.

"They're just here to make themselves feel better about their decision to buy a PS3 when they didn't have enough money to buy both. "

I don't think (using the x360 fanboy credentials) people have much to complain about if they bought a PS3 instead of a x360. Just look at Metacritic now. Stuff like that was relevant back in 2007ish when x360 had more games in the pipeline. Nowadays it's just yawn. Kinect -_-....again...? So it really doesn't cut it today. I don't know I'm a little drunk....

If getting up to change disk is hard for u then ur just lazy.. but why doesn't anyone think bout tha chances of losing or getting one of tha disk damaged? Then there goes ur experience. IMO that's tha difference wit one disk n multiple disk...

_Aarix_5049d ago

If you scratch one disc...its done. If you scratch one out of the three discs...its done. Its the same result so thats a bad reason.

HaHa_Ostrich5049d ago

Its much easier to scratch a DVD, compared to a BluRay. If youre a careless person, chances are youre gonna scratch that DVD no matter if theres one or three.
I think theres nothing particularly wrong with disc swapping, its just an annoyance. Just like mandatory installs on the ps3.

Ilikegames765049d ago

That must be the sole reason why multi-platform games sold more on the 360.

M-A-R-S-H-A-L-L5049d ago

....STOP DEFENDING THIS NONSENSE ALREADY. Has nothing to do with being lazy. In this day and age, games should be one disk now. It's the year 2011, not 2002.

or 60,000 floppy disc for the Commodore 64 version LOL

Multiple disc for the 360 is no big deal!! just be careful not to scratch one like someone up above mentioned scratching a FFXIII disc.

Next Gen all games will install to HDD

Abash5049d ago

@ fluffydelusions

It's about convenience. I could understand an RPG or open world game taking multiple discs, but now an FPS? Come on, it's like we're back in the PSOne days

OdinFallen5049d ago

It is not a matter of convenience. Its about people being lazy and complaining about a method of keeping as much quality in the game as possible.

Anyone bothered by having to get up and put another disk in is downright lazy, granted there are exceptions. I wouldn't disagree that disk swapping could be annoying if used at a very inopportune time, such as a cut-scene, or if the person playing is limited in their mobility.

mcstorm5048d ago

I dont see this being a problem at all. At the end of the day its not often a game has more than one DVD but I think if they do bring the game out on more than 1 DVD it will not affect the game they will have the game on 1 DVD and the MP on the other and that will be fine by be. The biggest problem these days is alot of people are in the cant be bothered and I want everything on one thing and my way. I remember having Bump and burn on the Amiga 1200 and it came on 8 Floppy disks and depending on which car you picked and which track you wanted depend on which floppy's had to be put into the machine. Or even my C64 where I had to rewind the tape before I could play the game. At the end of the day this is part of life and technology the devices are using.

I personally, prefer a single disc as multiplying the number of discs just increases the chances of my kids or my dogs scratching one of them and rendering the game broken. Thankfully, however, that's only MY issue and 99% of gamers will be fine with three discs, one disc or five discs or whatever-seriously, if you don't have a destructive family(like mine), a vindictive gf who scratches random discs when you annoy her(unlike mine)or a bizarre fear of walking a few feet to the console once every couple of hours then whatever version you get should be cool and nobody will lose out because of it. It's just not an issue to most gamers-and there'll be an install anyway, that you can choose to use and avoid most of the changing I'm willing to bet.

I just don't see why this old chestnut is being brought up as the end of the Wrold on this occasion. Had the limitations of DVD actually led to BF3 being cut in size on consoles or on 360 then fair enough but that's not the fear here and as such who really cares? Not many people have to suffer the disc paranoia I do.

frostyhat1235048d ago

Your logic doesn't make sense with the scratching!

MostJadedGamer5049d ago

Its always good to have the superior product, and Blu-Ray discs are superior. They are also far more durable as scratches will not make your disc skip.

andibandit5049d ago

I have to correct you here,

Blue ray discs have a scratch protective cover which makes them harder to scratch than DVDs. DVD's dont use this cover as they arent as sensible to scratches.

If you manage to scratch your Blue Ray Disc, you better start saying your prayers.

SephirothX215049d ago

62 people think that you were bothered by it.

hiredhelp5049d ago (Edited 5049d ago )

C64 never had floppy's you had casset deck and turbo deck. great days great times.

flash back and here we are moaning about disc's
even some games been moaned about there loading times on some games.

he he imagin waiting for 10-15 minutes everytime you wanted to play a differnt game. hoping it load up or you have to tighten the tape. you kids dont know your born.

showtimefolks5049d ago

but being a game on 2 or 3 disks shouldn't be an big issue they can have the single player on one disk and MP on the other.

But moving forward i am 100% sure MS will have bluray drives in the next xbox even patcher predicted that. there is no other way around it. And i think a lot of publishers will put a lot of pressure on MS to have some kind of disks with more disk space.

right now its 9gb with 2 gb for MS security software. Plus the publisher has to pay MS for each disk

but either way if they can put single player on one and MP on the other it should work out just fine

gw4k5049d ago

I hope it comes on ten discs!

BinaryMind5049d ago

Actually, I think it's kinda cool BF3 is so big, it's going to be the first multi-disc shooter.

Megaton5049d ago

It got a few eyerolls outta me in ME2, especially since I had already installed both discs.

"Alright! Time to go through the Omega 4 relay and pound some Collector stank!"

InNomeDiDio5049d ago

multiple discs aren't that bad imo

BABY-JEDI5049d ago

But this does raise an interesting question. Will the next X Box console have Blue Ray or another disc format? Or what?

Morgue5048d ago (Edited 5048d ago )

If they're to lazy to get up and change a disc what makes you think they will get up and go to the gym? I'm sure there's a lot of users on this site that pause the game and get up to, use the bathroom, text, go eat dinner. Stop acting like a disc change is such a tragedy.

ConstipatedGorilla5048d ago

To me, it's not so much about being lazy, but showing the 360's more and more apparent limitations. It's time for Microsoft to upgrade. It's getting silly now.

Aloren5049d ago

Like the good old days... yeah, like when games started to take a dozen floppy disks, we really needed the cd.
Then games took up to 6 or 7 cds, so we got the dvd.... and then we got the bluray when barely any game needed more than 1 dvd. 6 years later, the biggest games need 2 or sometimes 3dvds, and most still only need one.

Really, swapping a disk after 10hours or a 10 minutes mandatory install are nothing like swapping you floppy disks 21 times in one hour to install that pirated version of dark forces... damn, i feel old ;)
