Battlefield 3 to be on multiple discs on Xbox 360?

@XG247: Battlefield 3 has landed big time here in Cologne, Germany for the biggest video games trade-show on earth, Gamescom.

We've already seen new co-op gameplay, hands-on with 64 player online (on the PC) and been blown away with the graphical difference between the console and PC versions.

We also got a chance to speak to Karl Magnusson who's the General Manager of DICE about the size of the game.

Honestly couldn't care less either way. I played a few games on 360 that were multiple discs and it didn't bother me in the slightest. I think if getting up off the couch every 10 hours or so is of concern to you then perhaps you should take up a new hobby like going to the gym.

I don't see a problem with this. Single player campaign on one disc, multiplayer on the other disc. It's not like half of each would be on the other disc.

Though I understand why people hate having multiple discs, but it's nothing too hard that can't make you get up and change the disc...it's not like your life depends on it. During some situations; yes it can be a problem. I have a buddy whose Disc 2 of 3 of Final Fantasy 13 got badly scratched (nobody told him to move the console with the disc spinning) and for this reason, he can never finish the game! This is a rare situation.

Other than that, multiple discs are not a problem. If you find it hard to change them (it's not like it happens every 10-20 minutes) then you have a laziness issue to deal with. The only problem I see with multiple discs is that you don't have access to all the content at once but game studios work around this issue by designing the game well with this in mind: E.g.: Mass Effect 2.

IS this a shock? I mean the amount of information is getting bigger and bigger. I am sure many more of the big titles will need to be on more than one disc do to space. Not a big deal on a linear game like this. The issue is something like Rage or Final Fantasy XIII. Those games are meant to be open and disc swapping ruins the pacing. You didn't notice it back on PS One, but even games like that, you would miss a lot of side stuff because as you move onto other discs, they would be removed or unlocked, a cave would open up, a room would be closed, etc. I don't know how a full open game can run multiple discs. Crazy SKYRIM is only on one.

Everyone would prefer to have all games content on fewer discs; even better when it's just one disc- it's very convenient for the user and it's also much better in terms of cost-wise for the publishers as they don't have to pay for the extra costs of discs.

Its much easier to scratch a DVD, compared to a BluRay. If youre a careless person, chances are youre gonna scratch that DVD no matter if theres one or three.
I think theres nothing particularly wrong with disc swapping, its just an annoyance. Just like mandatory installs on the ps3.

It is not a matter of convenience. Its about people being lazy and complaining about a method of keeping as much quality in the game as possible.

Anyone bothered by having to get up and put another disk in is downright lazy, granted there are exceptions. I wouldn't disagree that disk swapping could be annoying if used at a very inopportune time, such as a cut-scene, or if the person playing is limited in their mobility.

I dont see this being a problem at all. At the end of the day its not often a game has more than one DVD but I think if they do bring the game out on more than 1 DVD it will not affect the game they will have the game on 1 DVD and the MP on the other and that will be fine by be. The biggest problem these days is alot of people are in the cant be bothered and I want everything on one thing and my way. I remember having Bump and burn on the Amiga 1200 and it came on 8 Floppy disks and depending on which car you picked and which track you wanted depend on which floppy's had to be put into the machine. Or even my C64 where I had to rewind the tape before I could play the game. At the end of the day this is part of life and technology the devices are using.

I personally, prefer a single disc as multiplying the number of discs just increases the chances of my kids or my dogs scratching one of them and rendering the game broken. Thankfully, however, that's only MY issue and 99% of gamers will be fine with three discs, one disc or five discs or whatever-seriously, if you don't have a destructive family(like mine), a vindictive gf who scratches random discs when you annoy her(unlike mine)or a bizarre fear of walking a few feet to the console once every couple of hours then whatever version you get should be cool and nobody will lose out because of it. It's just not an issue to most gamers-and there'll be an install anyway, that you can choose to use and avoid most of the changing I'm willing to bet.

I just don't see why this old chestnut is being brought up as the end of the Wrold on this occasion. Had the limitations of DVD actually led to BF3 being cut in size on consoles or on 360 then fair enough but that's not the fear here and as such who really cares? Not many people have to suffer the disc paranoia I do.

Blue ray discs have a scratch protective cover which makes them harder to scratch than DVDs. DVD's dont use this cover as they arent as sensible to scratches.

If you manage to scratch your Blue Ray Disc, you better start saying your prayers.

But moving forward i am 100% sure MS will have bluray drives in the next xbox even patcher predicted that. there is no other way around it. And i think a lot of publishers will put a lot of pressure on MS to have some kind of disks with more disk space.

right now its 9gb with 2 gb for MS security software. Plus the publisher has to pay MS for each disk

but either way if they can put single player on one and MP on the other it should work out just fine

Like the good old days... yeah, like when games started to take a dozen floppy disks, we really needed the cd.
Then games took up to 6 or 7 cds, so we got the dvd.... and then we got the bluray when barely any game needed more than 1 dvd. 6 years later, the biggest games need 2 or sometimes 3dvds, and most still only need one.

Really, swapping a disk after 10hours or a 10 minutes mandatory install are nothing like swapping you floppy disks 21 times in one hour to install that pirated version of dark forces... damn, i feel old ;)

A lot of pc games are on multiple disks, but they are usually just for installation and you do not have to switch disks during gameplay.

The XBOX will let you install or switch disks.

PC games usually use much more aggressive compression. (Remember, this kind of compression is lossless such as "zipping" and .7z, we aren't talking about lossy compression like MP3 or DXT1). PC can do this because you install the game and decompress it all one time. While the consoles need to decompress on the fly (especially if streaming, have no compression at all) while you play the game but you can't use up the consoles power decompressing all the time. So PC can get more info on one disc. Such as Crysis 1 being 1 DVD but installing in 12GB.

A dual layer dvdrom on pc are compressed into data files root folders that gt extracted (decompressed) to the pc. Part registery install main part again to pc root directory. Mainly normally local disc C, if not changed

This console gen is coming to a close anyway and developers managed to make this a non-issue until just recently.

Cut content gets sold as DLC. Publishers are happy about it.

For an FPS thats being bought for mainly multiplayer I think its kinda lame to ship with multiple discs.

But what it does do is reduce wear and tear on that one disc you would be using...so I suppose its not all bad.

I dont know, i saved about few 100$ back in the days when 360 was launched and i bought it not waiting for the ps3 which came 1 year later and @ 699$. The hype of bluray, 120fps didn't convince me. I'm glad i stuck to my earlier decision.

I think with whatever games we got so far, especially MP, i'm glad i paid less and got better versions. I dont care about 4 exclusive games which are great on one platform while tons of multiplat games over the years have been less than par on the same platform.

I have the freedom to install or play games right away depending on my mood or my HDD space while other platform has to have min installation in order to even play a game and if one is unlucky the need to remove some files from their hdds.

Dont forget 360s can accept 2 x 16gb usbs and games can be installed on them as well.

I think after 6 years of gaming i dont mind getting multiple discs which shows that more content is being put in games this late in the HD generation and i gladly saved few 100 bucks earlier on. My money is well spent now.

It wouldn't (or shouldn't) surprise me. I would assume if it was, that it would be 1 for the compaign + co-op missions, then 1 for the multiplayer. Not too bad of a deal, even if it's on 2 discs.

The only thing i love about Blu-Ray is that they are very scratch resistant, idc about having all my content on one cd although it is nice to have.

360 owners have no problems getting up and changing a dvd it is a 7 second job to do.

The people praying for this game to come on multiple discs are worse than the people that have no problem with multiple discs. The latter simply have no choice, but it takes a conscious effort to hate.

If both games run about the same ( framerate,v-sync, etc) then im going with the 360. I play BFBC2 on PSN and the maps are empty plus no one has mics. BF is a team game. Xbox live will help make my choice. The ps3 should come with a mic. Every shooter that i have played on PS3 has little to no comm between the players. I will take disc swapping to a crap on line exp any day.

It can come on 5 discs, I prefer the stable and non-hacked xbox live online service, compared to the un-socialable, hacked, and laggy playstation network, and the controller on the 360 is much better. Bring on 5 discs, who cares.

they give away usb drives with pre orders now days so it must be cheap. Microsoft wants to go disc less and have everyone download games, but if you still want to have something physical i would say a solid state drive game disc is the way to go. loads fast, no scratching or skipping, more durable.
