Wild Speculation: 1 Million “Kinect Fun Labs” Downloads Doesn’t Necessarily Equal Success

As part of their press release bragging about July US sales of the Xbox 360, Microsoft mentioned that “Kinect Fun Labs has garnered more than 1 million downloads in only two months”. On the surface this sounds pretty good but digging a little deeper into the numbers reveals that it might not be all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows for Kinect.

Comes off as sounding butt hurt IMO and I don't even own a Kinect.

How? I am honestly confused. Saying that even a free game isn't being downloaded at high numbers seems to be solid evidence that it is not doing as well as thought.

I have to agree with you averyzoe . a lot of these articles are veiled attempts at shatting on kinect but this is backed up by cold hard math. the assumptions are logically sound and well reasoned.

the article is not suggesting 1 million units is poor, more that the apathy and uptake is a little south of PR figures.

There is NO hard math in this article. Hell, they even admit to not having any actual numbers, besides what has been announced by the company. This is nothing but an article speculating with NO source material to even back up their claims. I thought I was going to fearsome well though out and explained.

Edit: lol, I can't believe you said cold hard math. I had to go look at it again, lol. Anyway, if this app was launched alongside Kinect at launch, it would've obviously had higher numbers of downloads. Add to it that people probably didn't waste their time downloading it when they caught wind that the app wouldn't work without a hard-drive.

All I have to say is this is eerily familiar to the Uncharted 3 Beta situation.

1.5 million downloads in just weeks but people were saying it was a failure since it was an Open Beta.

In my opinion that doesn't mean it is a failure, just shows there is a market for that game/application, and that market does not include everyone.

ok so the "math" part was an overstatement, but the speculations still makes sense. the focus of the article is on the slow uptake of a heavily advertised free app using a piece of technology that is devoid of retail titles. hell its like most of the launch 3ds owners not bothering to get their free games! ;)

Wow....What has gaming come to?

The Sega vs PS1 era was bad but this gen is ridiculous with people playing numbers instead of games.

Let MS or Sony worry about sales and you worry about how your going to plan your gaming schedule come September onwards.
