Mark Rein: PS3 UT3 graphics better than Gears of War

PS3 UT3 has better graphics than Gears of War according to Mark Rein, Epic's vice president.

Speaking in an interview with Pro-G at the launch of the PC version of the game, Rein said that he was "really proud" of the PS3 game.

He said: "People are going to be pleasantly surprised. It's a really high end experience that pushes the graphics bar up even higher than Gears of War. There's more polygons, there's more stuff going on, there's more explosions and there's more things happening, so we're just really pleased with the way the game runs on the PS3."

Rein said that there is "something special" about playing UT3 on the PS3, and that while the speed of the game has been reduced by about 20%, "it feels just right to be playing it with a controller".

The article is talking about the differences between the PC version and the console version. There is no console out (not even the PS3) that can handle the speed of a gaming computer. UT was always coming to PS3, that was said before Gears was even out. No one is disputing whether or not UT3 can be done on 360, we all know it can be as the engine has ran quite well on the system in the various games that use it. The PS3 however did have issues which has been stated as being fixed due to Sony actually being proactive with developers now. That said, personally I do believe Gears can very well be done on the PS3. Will we see it? No, MS owns the IP but the graphic intensive part is done and let's be honest the gameplay wasn't that deep. Kill.Switch pulled that off last gen.

Instead of these petty ass fanboy squabbles from both sides, worry about if the games are actually going to be good. I mean that's what people are fighting over right? I've seen a lot of mediocre crap made with this engine and I've seen a few gems. Same thing happened with the last 2 incarnations though which shows that it's going to take more than licensing a high profile engine to make a good game.

Comparing the latest UT3 footage, its like Gears a lot. I didn't see so much difference. The coverage system taken out isn't even an improvement in my eyes. There weren't any games to compete with the graphics of GOW in the 2nd year of the 360, so that logic is completely faulty. UT3 PS3 looks better than any game released in the first and second year of the 360, and Uncharted looks better than UT3. Sure COD4 looks better than GOw as well, but the PS3 version is the best looking console version, so that theory goes out the door as well.

Maybe Bioshock, but that might be stretching it.

I've heard, from certain PS3 fangirls, that the COD4 version on the PS3 would be superior to the 360 version. When we look at the latest screenshots, its clear the 360 is on top in many things like smoke, sharpness of textures, AA etc. Even in the multiplayer department its better.

Well, I guess I can see why Ps3 diehards are so pleased. Theres no question that 360 trolls have been crowing about GOW and 'how the PS3 could not technically do it' for ages, and GOW has been held up as the benchmark for the greatest graphics on a 360 game (though cod4 may be the new king).

Well now the engine has been developed for the PS3, and the results are spectacular. It doesn't prove any console is better than the other of course, but it what it does do is completely disprove all the lies that the 360 fans battered PS3bots with for so long.
The machine can host a game with better graphics than GOW, and its now obvious that the PS3 could have easilly handlled GOW if it had been developed for that system.

When you've been taking a beating from fanbots for so long, its only natural to crow a bit when those lies are so obviously show up for what they are.

I like to consider myself neutral as I love both formats, but I must admit that recent PS3 titles like Ratchet, Drakes, COD4 and UT3 have got me excited! If this is what we are getting from this architecture so early in the machines cycle, I can't wait to see whats coming in the following years.

Saying newer=better graphics is far too simplistic, but saying that a company who have used an engine (and actually developed it themselves) already have moved on and now use it in more impressive ways wouldnt be a stretch at all.

I personally dont care which version is better - I prever xbox live to psn, but prefer dual shock pads. If both versions have equally good framerates/graphics, i'd probably go for the 360 version, but that doesnt make the ps3 version any worse a game - its personal preference, and not something that requires a mad fanboi rant.

Your misunderstanding by what they mean by gamespeed.

They are not talking about framerate. It still runs at a solid 30Fps, its the movement speed of the characters that is slower. Basically a 100 meter sprint on PS3 might take 10 seconds but would take 7 seconds on PC.

The reason is because controllers cant compete with the accuracy of a mouse and you wouldn't be able to hit anyone with a controller if the actually ran at the same speed as the PC version. Its not a technical issue, its a design decision to make the game better with a controller and yes this is probably the biggest reason PC vs Console play isnt included. The speeds would have to be balanced out and PS3 owners would still get caned by mouse users.

Having been away from this site for a while I return to an even more fanboy infested place than the last time I checked, before I never thought that was possible.

Rein isn't lying obviously, but in making that comment the Xbox fanboys bring out the 'They've had a whole year to make it'. Yet Gears was released after at least a year of hands-on with the 360; likewise UT3 has been made with at least a year of hands on with the PS3.

Both were learning curves for Epic in one way or another. 'A year after Gears of War' isn't a stable comeback to this news btw guys, if we're talking 360 only for a second then yeah that makes sense, but the PS3 has been out for just a year and this game is in exactly the same position for those developing for the PS3 as Gears was for the 360 last year. Fresh system and an ever present learning curve to boot.

Does this prove the PS3 is better than the 360 graphically? I would say yes but then you never know what the next dev team will come up with. The 360 games tend to be given that last minute spit-shine of bloom effects and everyone drools over it but what Rein has stated here is something different and makes the PS3 development capabilities seem a whole lot stronger for future games.

A year from release for a new system and the 360 got an award-winning Gears.
A year from release for a new system and the PS3 has a graphically superior UT3 (Awards tbc).

I know where I stand... but I have no evidence to say either console is the superior console overall.

Onto other news, Uncharted demo has just raised the graphics bar again.

I just loaded up the Farcry on pc with hdr, and i tell you, that game still looks good after a few years.

Crysis is something special with dx10 and all fx, but you need a 8800gt - gtx to run it.

Gears of war uses the unreal engine. The same engine ut3 uses, of course there will be changes, thats normal the same thing happens with valves source engine, they get updated.

Its like comparing virtual fighter 5.

Both from different versions of the game.

360 version has more aa, but looks plastic.
ps3 version has no aa, but looks cleaner, also notice the water ripples on the ps3 version, but does not on the 360 version. Weird huh.

I'll tell you one more thing.

I have a new system and an old system.

Quadcore 8800gtx 4gb ram, dualboot vista/xp/

amd64(3500) 6800gt 2gb ram and xp.

On the new system ut3 runs with ease.

And to my surprise.on the old system at 1024x768 full up, it runs mainly around 30fps.

So yes a ps3 would easily do, ut3, gears.

I was expecting this. Any 360 fanboy that has sense should have expected this (I'm neutral by the way, I just call things as I see them). It's only natural that development would become better and better with time on any platform. Remember that they got special help from Sony with this though and that it is farther along in development than the 360 version because of this. Since the ps3 is more powerful than the 360, but this is Epic's first game on the ps3, then I expect the 360 version to at worst be on par with the ps3 version. VF5 was slightly better on the 360, but UT3 is more demanding of the hardware. Apparently its easier to make a soup (360 CPU) than a three course meal (ps3 CPU). Hope the 360 version doesn't suffer though, since Sony made Epic pay much more attention to the ps3 version than the 360 version just to get it to look better than GOW.

I own both systems and can truthly say both rock! A lot of Xbox fanboys doubted the PS3, and for good reasons. However, there shouldn't be any questions now--the PS3 is the real deal. If, you have the cash pick one up and play all the great games. By the way, COD4 looks a little better on the PS3, but really too close to call. It really depends on what pitures or videos you're looking at.

WOW, never have I seen a game as detailed as uncharted. When the guy breathes, his shirt actually wrinkles on his stomach...thats just an insane level of detail. When he fires a shot, he has so many different facial expressions...the graphics are just SICK and the lushness of the forest is AMAZING. URT has better charactor modles much more special effects and vehicles that give it better overall graphics, but it doesn't have the "Destroyed Beauty" detail of gow Epic made MSFT design the 360 around.

I just finished Playing God of War 1 & 2 on ps3 at 480p and it was an amazing and very satisfying experience!!The Best in a while!
THe Game is a 10 and what they did with the PS2 technology was astounding along with the gameplay and the story itself.
They remind me of an Old brilliant Sega before they (Sega) failed to get with the times(I.e.Mature Gaming).

Im looking forward to see if the GOW dev team can get Cell, Blu-ray and RSX firing off 100% & crush all the competition! watch out all you soon to be Extinct PC/360 budget Developers with their Wainning old PC engines,Cross platform this game Bichez ! LOL

There are actually some wierdos out there who believe that Motorstorm is a game that looks better than any game ever made....LOL...

So if you throw the same wierdos a bone and say this game is better visually than the year old blockbuster....the theory is it will attract graphic whores....

The only problem with that is this.....I'm someone who is into Graphics.....and I have yet to see a Ps3 game that even comes close to Gears, Prey, Call of Duty 4 (and yes the 360 version looks and runs better than the ps3 version).....Halo 3 (yes even with its dual 640p buffers)....and many more.

I have both the Ps3 and the xbox 360 and I have them both hooked to my 61 inch 1080p DLP Samsung Display via HDMI.

I have compared with friends and its very very clear that the xbox 360 is much better for games. I know that will offend some Solo Ps3 owners....But it would be an injustice if I were anything but completely honest.

I know it will most likely be the best looking game for the Ps3 when its released in early 2008....But,I believe that the 360 version will end up clearly being the superior version in just about every area.....

But like I started saying initially....Epic knows that they have to get some sort of hype going for the Ps3 version....hoping that they can make a little bit of money from a console that has only seen 2 games sell over 1 million copies worldwide....and 0 titles that have sold over a million copies in the USA....which is the biggest FPS shooter market.....

Epic knows that they have to sell the game to the US market....

Only problem is the US consumers aren't buying it. Not one bit....Europeans can believe it....the japanese can believe it....But I can tell you that the US consumer isn't buying it. We know which is the superior gaming console....And we know that even if by some small chance the Ps3 version looks better than the year old Gears of War.....We know for a fact that the 360 version will be not only better than Gears Graphically....but it will also be better than the Ps3 version. So we don't mind waiting a couple months....if that....to get the better version....Thats Real Deal Holyfield stuff there folks....

Its clear my friend. I could care less about the youtube video comparissons and the screen shot comparissons....Me and my friends actually sat down and compared in FULL HD with my Elite vs my Ps3. Though I do believe the Ps3 version looks good don't get me wrong...but the 360 version is clearly better in regards to the detail, hdr ligting, shadowing, ect....

I challenge you to rent the 360 version and do the comparisson yourself...if at the end of the comparisson you think it looks the same....I will buy you a game of your choice. Motorstorm's graphics are amazing. Really.

Can't you just realize that the reason we're being treated to all of these amazing games, is because of the competition driving up the limits of both consoles. We've seen what the 360 can offer and what the PS3 can offer, both are incredibly capable of delivering a hell of a next-gen gaming experience. Gears pushed the limits last year, and hopefully UT3 pushes them this year/early next. By next year Killzone 2 and Gears 2 will be out (I can't imagine Epic not pushing out the cash cow that is Gears 2 for holiday season '08), along with a hell of a lot of other great games, and I guarantee many of them will be surpassing what UT3 can do now.

This is a great time to be a gamer... both sides have a great line up to look forward to... if it wasn't for COD4, Assassins Creed, and Mass Effect within 3 weeks and already having the 360, I'd be buying a PS3 for Drakes Fortune right about now.

the speed reduction is almost certainly due to how fast paced UT3 is. it would be such a pain in the ass to play that game on a console at full speed using a sixaxis or the 360's controller.
